Was arguing with a hole fan at work today about who the acc champion is. He said they are because they won the regular season. I said tourney winner is the real champion now. With the unbalanced regular season, all that does is provide seeding for the tournament. I told him all they were was the number one seed going into the tourney.
Funny how when they win the tourney, they are the champions, and when they win the regular season, they are the champion. So which is it dopshits?
Bless our UNC friends, (I have some in my family), but we cannot let them rewrite ACC History. If I may make a few points.
1. The winner of the ACC Tournament is the OFFICIAL CHAMPION of the ACC. They get the moniker of "ACC Champions", the shirts, hardware, rings, etc for winning the tournament.
2. No matter what anyone says, this does not change that fact.
3. The first entity to even recognize a so-called "Regular Season Title" was not the ACC, but rather it was Dean Smith and Carolina who decided in the 1980's to reward themselves with banners for finishing first in the league. As Jim Valvano once quipped when looking at UNC's banners, "hey I thought we won those?" as he noticed ACC Champions banners in 1983 and 1987. (State won the ACC Tourney both those seasons but UNC finished first)
4. The ACC never even officially recognized a first place finisher until 1990. Nearly 40 years into the league's existence. They did so because Clemson and then head coach Cliff Ellis, made a big stink out of not getting credit for winning the regular season which I believe is the only time in program history they have done so. They have never won the ACC Tournament.
5. Even if you wanted to argue that the regular season is a bigger achievement, you simply cannot anymore now that the league does not have apples to apples schedules. For you UNC readers, if you look at the top 9 ACC teams (excluding the Heels since they can't play themselves) UNC played only 3 of the other 8 teams on the road. They got 5 of the top 8 teams at home. Instead the Heels got the bottom 6 teams in the league all on the road. (Pitt, BC, NCSU, etc) Of the three big road games UNC had, (UVA, Duke, Miami) the Heels lost all three. Duke meanwhile, played the other 8 teams all on the road. @ UVA, @FSU, @UNC, @ Notre Dame, @Louisville, @ Miami, etc. etc..How a Carolina fan could even with a straight face boast about finishing 1st with such a favorable league schedule is beyond me.
6. The ACC Tournament is the Granddaddy of all league tournaments. It is the most tradition rich tournament in the country, one that has been copied by many other leagues. The Big 10 for example didn't even have a tournament for most of it's History. The SEC abandoned their league Tournament from 1953-1978. Resuming it in 1979. (From 1933-50 the SEC Tourney determined their Champ until a round robin schedule was introduced)
7. Duke wasn't in NY for cocktails, they were there for Hardware and they got it. UNC fans may not like it but they cannot rewrite the history books and league rules. Sorry.
