i find it interesting that the athletic department has let the Pennsylvania pipeline die and the link to Nebraska fade away. that was our thing. not much of one but it was ours.....

I think the pipeline to PA was Dave Rader and once he convinced a few of the western PA guys to come, a lot of them came.

thats what i don't understand. that was an inroad for this area that was unique. did TU just quit caring or was it a victim of the recruit on a tank of gas idea?

I actually know quite a few older guys from the Pittsburgh area that played at Tulsa and were thrilled when my son went there. Many gave us suggestions on where to eat and things to do. Coach Fredrick still comes out to the spring game every year.

TU had Pennsylvania players as far back as 1939. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area in the 1950s and 1960s and was aware of Tulsa through players like Tony Liscio. Mark Thomas was a Rader Assistant who had many contacts in Pennsylvania. Some notable Western Pennsylvania players at TU were Liscio, Gus Frerotte, Michael Wall, the Spanos brothers, the Purifoy brothers, Steve August, Bob Babich, Bob Junko, Brennan Marion. Also, Jerry Ostrowski and Kevin Shaffer from Eastern Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is good for Quarterbacks and linemen.

Allegedly, in the 1940s there was a Tulsa oilman who was a Pitt alum. He arranged to send Julius Pegues to Pitt to play basketball. Pegues was the top Tulsa high school player in the mid 1950s. The Oklahoma schools, including TU would not recruit him because of his race. The oilman sent Pegues to Pitt, to become the first black basketball player at that school. In return, the Pitt athletic department assisted TU by helping point football players to TU. Pegues led Pitt to the NCAA Tourney in the late 1950s and became the first player from a Tulsa High School to be drafted by the NBA. He never played in the NBA, he joined the Air Force and returned to Tulsa with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Pitt. H2P (Hail to Pitt).
