If not Rod, then who?

If Rod Thompson is not hired, what are other names that would be viable candidates to help fix our recruiting issues?

Are there any other local candidates that have strong connections to quality AAU programs in Oklahoma?

My apologies if this topic has already been discussed.

As long as he gets his reports in on time, it won’t matter.

Well, right now Haith's name is being mentioned for the St. John's job. Don't know how serious it is...who do we go after if he does end up there? Kim English? Billy Clyde? And who's the dude everyone is in love with at East Tennessee?

How about Mike Anderson. (English isn't ready for this level of a HC gig)
I'll disagree that English isn't ready. You either can or you can't. I don't think there is a prescribed number of years as an assistant that determine if you can or can't. I think he is one of the brightest minds in the college game, he's already developing his style, and he's obviously a guy who knows his stuff...why else would Tennessee bring him in?

Eh, maybe it was a pipe dream but Poplin is saying he's hearing there is no truth to the rumor on Twitter (although a St. John's beat reporter was the one that put it out there).

Tennessee brought him in partly because he is good... but partly because there's a connection there between English, Haith, and Barnes. I would just like to see English start somewhere like a UMKC, UALR, La Tech, or Southern Miss and have a couple positive building seasons before we brought him on.

Same goes for any coach really. Unless it's an all star assistant I'm really not interested. I want someone that's run a program before and had consistent success doing it. A Greg Marshall type so to speak.

Haith has been known to get out while the getting is good. He's a NYC native, who currently works at his second private school where he has had a national recruiting style. The other private school was on the east coast and in a high level conference.

Their search has been a dumpster fire and a guy making 900k in the MVC just turned down the job with a 8 year, 2 million dollar offer. Even if this is just Haith throwing his hat in the ring, there is a better than a coin flip chance he will get a serious look.

St. John's gets a winning coach, local, his buy out is probably less than the Loyola guy. The big east gets to lord it over the AAC they took a coach. Haith gets out of the hot seat and gains some job security and salary raise.

Considering that St. John's has no idea what to do next, I think this has a good chance of turning into something. Haith's agent I am sure made the call just to check.

Haith has a remarkable knack of landing jobs when he's about to get fired from his current gig. Love him or hate him you have to give the man props for his ability to survive in a very tough business.

He is very good at knowing the lay of the land and seizing opportunities.

That's why this makes so much sense. St. John's truly is a bit stuck. Meta World Peace may be there next best option.

Haith can see it easily, see they have the money to spend and that it's a not terrible job where he might succeed. This is the sort of thing he does when it doesn't work out, find a nice landing spot and try again. Which is why I am sure his agent at least made a phone call.

UMBC coach turned down Saint John's. Haith looking more and more like a strong candidate.

Guarantee you that Anderson is on the top of Gragg’s short list. There’s a reason there was a rumor he was coming back to TU.

Idk. Anderson has not done so well in previous searches.

I think we look at former players currently coaching, probably two or three up and coming midmajors who are young and hungry. It's late and a lot of moves have already been made.

Wish I felt more confident in Graggs networking for this situation. Still it could work out well for all.

At this point, nothing would surprise me. I’ve heard plenty of info about Haith’s contract here, but it’s hard to take that at 100% face value based on his past record of getting out while the getting is good.

If I had to make an educated guess, it would be that he’ll stay, but again, you never know.

I’m hoping for some happy news tomorrow to ease everyone’s ills. We’ll see what happens.

I know something that would make me very happy. If it's that I feel like TU has entered a win win situation no matter what happens.

I have discussed other candidates in Hurricane Alley, including an assistant that interviewed last week.

Kelly Hines agrees with Pats - "I’m told Frank Haith is not a candidate for the St. John’s opening."

Jeez, who would know more about what's going on at their school?

Kelly Hines and the Tulsa World or the beat writer for St. John's who has been the ahead of every part of their coaching search from Clueless to Porter? Pointed out what Pitino wanted to coach them. Even calling the St. John's parting ways with Mullins before the season ended?

I love when people say things like this. Mick Cronin wasn't going to UCLA either.

I'm sure that Haith's name just came from a ouija board out of no where. He may not get the job or try but I will straight laugh at anyone using Kelly Hines as a Tulsa source for anything not formally announced. Have you all heard her when conference teams sports stations call her to talk?

If you've seen the Twitter thread, St. John's fans will be relieved to know Haith is not an actual candidate.

They don't seem too pleased with his controversial background.

From what I can tell, Coach Haith and Coach Boynton (OSU) share the same agent. St John's has allegedly been in contact with that agent, but it's unclear as to which coach they are inquiring about.

I don't know how many coaching searches I've covered for TU basketball and football over the past 18 years, but it's a lot. It's very plausible that St. Johns has spoken to Haith's agent...but that doesn't make him a candidate. I don't get too excited about this stuff until it's serious. Until that point, no need wasting time on rumors.

You kinda sound like a moron. Kelly has good sources. Frank is not a candidate there.

Schools conducting coaching searches speak to coaches of other schools for things other than considering them for a position with their school. The media hears a discussion took place and immediately thinks the conversation was about that coach filling the vacancy. That simply isn't always true....as in this case.

On a side....the big news of the day is that Ugboh is announcing his choice of schools.

Haven't seen a time yet. He would be the jewel of this recruiting class imo and fill a position of great need.

Exactly what this class needs. Any chance we also pick up the grad transfer IF we get Ugboh?

With the comings and goings I am unsure of how many scholarships we have left.
