Martin with 43 and 37 the last two games. Hmmm, isn't he a Tubby recruit?

Yep. Lower leve recruit who struggled to find his way under Tubby. Penny has done a nice job of developing his game. Memphis is going to be a problem for the conference with the talent they’re bringing in next season. Penny has done a better job with this roster than I anticipated. Hurts me to admit that.

You don't think Tubby would have got this out of Martin if he was able to stay through Martin maturing as a player? I want to give Penny more time, before I make an assessment of whether Penny is a success and his players kill it. But yeah Penny is presently in a better light than a lot of people gave him credit for, myself included. Just have to wait and see if he glows more golden with his players or not.

No clue what Tubby would have done with Martin at Memphis. Martin does give Penny a ton of credit for his play in the quotes I’ve read. Once Tubby burned bridges with the local AAU scene he wasn’t going to be able to field a competitive team. Interested to see what Penny does with NBA talent next season.

I didn't exactly think it was just Tubby burning bridges, so much as Tubby reacting to Penny's sabotage and burning them at the same time. Potatoe, potato though. I share your interest.

I didn't realize you were referring specifically to Lawson's firing.

Yes. Really hated to see what happened to Tubby at Memphis. Hard to understand exactly what went down. Tubby is an A+ coach and had an A+ recruiter with NBA talented sons and a pipeline to Memphis AAU. Tubby takes the job and basically fires his most important assistant. We all agree that Tubby is a class act.

Martin averaged 18.9 last year under Tubby. 18.3 this year, with a marginally better offensive rating.

We all know it was to get Saul a job there. Tubby knew that doing so might inflame everyone but family was more important than keeping the Memphis recruits happy. I think he may have felt he could get a deep NCAA team in 3-4 years anyway and the firing decision so quickly surprised him since he was winning a lot.

Yeah, but in the last 7 games after he played us, he has averaged 30.7
(And he had a game in that 7 that he only scored 12 to bring the average down.)

I don't know if that's only anecdotal, or a dramatic trend upwards that signifies an lasting improvement in playing ability,. But 30.7 for 7 games is pretty impressive.

Wasn't he a unknown, when he came and built a successful program here?

If you call an unknown, an assistant from National Champion Kentucky. He didn't get a highly rated recruit till Shea and lastly Michael Ruffin. He did well with local kids who played hard and leftovers from JD (Collier and Dawkins)
Robinson had better players from Tubby, but Tubby had a special charisma. He was great for the time.
