If they ever go to an 8 team play-off the talk of 16 will begin immediately [or 12 with the top four getting a bye.] I'm not for or against it, but championship game brought a four place series, now talk of 8, 8 would bring 16.

I don't understand how a team that
Does not win its conference championship,
Does not play in its conference championship game
Does not even win its conference division;

Can be considered to play in a .playoff

The committee uses the "eye" test to evaluate team strength. By which I mean "the number of eyes that will watch that team on Tv and see the ads that the bowl sells".

then why do they even play the season? in September, just pick the four teams they want and have a playoff.

Yes pretty much, but with the regular season hemming it in. So you get Ohio State instead of Texas or USC or Michigan or vice versa depending on who's up and who's down but you get pretty much all from that pool.
