I think you have to log into espn with your TV provider for just about everything these days.

So free if you're already paying for espn elsewhere...

I understood it as espn3 was free to anyone (since it's an online only exclusive), but that you needed a cable or satellite login to watch anything that appeared on ESPN, espn2, espnu or espnews through the app. Anyone know for sure?

Did anyone watch any of our basketball games against lesser competition last year that only appeared on espn3 (incarnate word etc)?

Is there a difference between ESPN3 and WatchESPN. I know I had to log in to the site and verify you were a previous ESPN subscriber which is usually logging in through your TV service (Cox, DirectTV, etc.). Someone mentioned that DirectTV carried all the ESPN3 games last weekend, but I couldn't find them. It would have been better than all the endless drivel of The FBS vs FCS Challenge last weekend. Outside of the made for TV games at neutral sites (Bama/Wisconsin, A&M/TGs Kids) it was a really bad slate of football games this weekend.

As for TU vs New Mexico, take us and the points. Back in 2001 we started the season with a 51-0 drubbing of Indiana St and then proceeded to lose the next 17 games. 66-0 vs MVST simply means you had a successful scrimmage against a team slightly more competitive than your scout team walk-ons.

Also folks, if you have an Xbox One or 360 (or probably a Playstation 3 or 4) the ESPN app is available for free and streams ESPN 3 it appears. I'm testing it right now and I haven't even had to sign in to an account or synced an ESPN account. If you have that option, might be an easy way to watch it on the tv instead of the computer screen.

ESPN3 is on a laptop or desktop (an actual www address) and watchespn is an app. It's also it's own programming not available on any of the traditional networks.

The last time I used espn3 on a desktop I had to log into my cox account first.

You could just go to the website right now and see if you can watch things or not. Pretty easy to find out.

I can see being able to watch espn3 exclusive content on an Internet connection that's affliliated with a provider. But they aren't going to be giving away content from ESPNU or SEC network for free if you aren't verified as paying for it somewhere else.

If your Xbox is signed into another app via a TV provider it probably just does it automatically. We don't have to sign into everything individually on the Apple TV and my iPad automatically picks up that it's on the uverse wifi and logs me into a TV app (ESPN, fox, lifetime, etc)

While we are talking about ESPN, did anyone catch the College Football Final new format? I know it got a little corny with Mumbles Holtz in there, but Rece Davis and Mark May were pretty good at breaking the day down. I pretty much fell asleep watching Tessitore and Joey Galloway. Boring.

Everything here is mostly correct, thought it may be helpful to include the information in one place.

1. To watch ESPN 3 content your Internet provider has to be licensed with ESPN (most of them these days). If your Internet provider is licensed this happens automatically without the user logging in. If your Internet provider is nor licensed then you have to have a cable subscription that includes ESPN.
2. To watch content that is available on TV online you must have a cable subscription and log into it via their website. If you are required to authenticate in one of their apps, it will show a code on screen and a Web address to use to login to your provider. Using the code tells your app you are authenticated.

DirecTV did carry the espn3 games this past weekend, they were in the 790's, channel wise. I watched UH there.

Last Saturday, Cox Cable in Tulsa had "ESPN College Sports Extra" games on channels 1380 -1386. They had some AAC games including Memphis, Cincinnati & USF. I'm hoping our game vs New Mexico will be on there this Saturday. They don't have any games listed, yet.

Just did some research on New Mexico. I didn't know they run a triple option. Their local paper said they didn't run any last week to keep their QB healthy but I'm sure we'll see it. I watched some film of their offense against Air Force and it's pretty neat actually lots of read option + a pitch, speed option, and play action passes. They have some unique formations and lots of presnap movement. Our defense will have to be disciplined and ready to tackle well to keep them out of the end zone.

As far as their defense goes, apparently it's not too special. They know we'll go up tempo and that we have good receivers. Hopefully we can get enough stops to steal another shoot out

Read option and Triple option really scare me for our defense. I suspect we will get in the backfield against NM just like we did vs FAU. The problem was we weren't following the football but instinctively attacking the RB. Hopefully in the film room the DL and LB groups can see these mistakes and the coaches and get through to them the importance of being sound and following the ball with their eyes.

Remember what Kragthorpe did playing against Hatfield's offense at Rice...TU's defense would go the entire week without playing against a ball. It was a true assignment defense set-up. I believe TU did the same thing to prep for the games against Navy.

Good info above! Here's just an FYI from someone who has been cable TV-free for a few years now...but at the risk of sounding like an advertisement...

Sling now offers ESPN and a (small) package of cable channels for online streaming without needing a cable subscription. It is $25/month for all of ESPN's channels as well as online access to WatchESPN. It isn't exactly cheap, but you also get CNN,TNT,TBS,History Channel, and a number of others. You can then stream ESPN to your hi-def TV using something like Amazon FireTV (I use the stick which I purchased for only $39) with your Sling account credentials or just stream it on your computer.

There is talk of ESPN starting to not be as profitable as it used to be and they may pull the plug on licensing their channels to Sling, but I figured an outlay of $39 to try it wasn't too bad.

There's nothing like that for Fox sports of CBS sports affiliates?

Even if there was, by the time we pay separately for all the sports networks we need and then hulu and netflix, cable or satellite just makes the most sense. :(

I hear ya. Definitely for someone who wants all the sports channels, it is easier to go with cable.

Only in our situation, we save money by going "a la carte" but we never did subscribe to HBO or other movie channels. We pay $25 for Sling plus $9 for Hulu and $8 for Netflix, so for our (incomplete) package we pay $42/month (plus internet connection, but we would pay for that anyway.) Finally, we bought a $40 indoor HD antenna so we get the local networks.

As you said, though, there would be no Fox Sports or CBS sports channels, and you don't get DVR out of the box. It's an imperfect solution, but I guess I am cheap enough to put up with it. ;)

It's on the watch ESPN app, just looked.

I've seen it advertised as being shown in Tulsa. I'm not sure if the bar doesn't get what espn3 means or they are doing something Hardwood-like...

Cox shows both the SMU & Memphis games on channels 1382 & 1383 tomorrow night. Those are both ESPN3 games. However, no listing for TU's ESPN3 game. Maybe there is some sort of blackout rule ? That's the only reason I can find for it not being on Cox.
