"Cost of attendance"

It appears Tulsa will be offering significantly less than some other schools, including OU and OSU. I'm still not sure why additional money is necessary when you consider that many athletes have been smart enough with their current stipends that they were able to save a good chunk of it. Still, looks like just another thing that will make it harder to compete as schools start using it in recruiting.

The NCAA made a colossal mistake in not mandating a set amount for the "cost of attendance" which is the same for every member school. They have allowed schools to juggle accounting numbers to come up with their own numbers thus giving some schools a recruiting advantage over others. Gragg said that TU won't attempt to gain a recruiting advantage due to the cost of attendance stipend. Duh..... we are on the low end of the money train.

Many of the lists I'm seeing have much smaller stipends for private schools compared to their public counterparts. TCU being one exception.

I take that back.

The figures haven't been a "stipend" so much as the year over year difference of the full cost of attendance totals.

Until everything clears up on this, I'd think we should spend whatever SMU and Houston do. Make that our standard.

My guess is the Autonomous 5 will soon become fearful of interleague and conference competition for the stipend dollar and set, if not a fixed amount, a range or a formula that is tight and capable of being audited independently. I find it ludicrous that the stipend is higher in high dollar Stillwater and Manhattan (KS) than in low dollar (sarcasm) LA and Boston.

The ncaa should set an amount and the money should come from them.
Otherwise it will highlight the "income inequality" currently active amount D1
schools.

The problem with the NCAA is there a gutless, spineless organization that will not enforce laws are limits on the power five conferences. When it comes to the remainder of the schools, they will screw them every day over trivial things.

I suspect there are a number of posters on here who will constantly complain about this. And I suspect 99% of those complaining don't have season tickets or make donations to GHC. Just sayin.

I would not complain about how low our number is anyways. I'm complaining at the fact that this is even happening.

Stipends should be no more than a student loan that starts being paid back after said student is no longer attending school. You should be able to choose how much of, if any of that money you want to use.

Fine, but there's a big distinction between complaining about this rule change and complaining about TU's budget when those posters don't give the school a dime. I'm clearly talking about the latter. I stand by my guesstimate.

My complaint lies solely with the NCAA and their system which allows member schools to pay athletes an arbitrarily determined amount to attend their school rather than setting an uniform figure for all schools to follow. The NCAA has been neutered by the P5 schools and the situation will only get worse.

Maybe I'm rare here but I'm pretty surprised we are giving $2,500. I realize OU and OSU is $4,000+ but while it remains unregulated they'll always be able to provide a much higher cost of attendance than TU.

I'm fine with cost of attendance but not a fan of the lack of regulation.

One thing that is disgusting about this change is that a school like TU, for the most part, takes care of their students and they receive a quality education. In contrast, a school like ECU doesn't do all that much (see Zelton Steed). It's telling that they have to throw in some cash to make up for that.

I find it hilarious that Auburn is almost twice as much as Alabama. How much you want to bet that changes next year?

Yes, there are some noticeable differences on the scale where the value of the education at that school seems to be inversely proportional to the bump for COA. The old Big 10 schools and the ACC are generally ahead of the SEC and Big XII academically and their positions on that posted list are flip-flopped.

The variation between the top end and bottom end is pure garbage. You cannot tell me it costs more to be entertained and eat out in Knoxville, TN than it does in Boston and Los Angeles. I was a college student in Boston for 2 years...it is flipping expensive. The $3 pizza special across the street was my best friend. Boston College and USC figured that a schollie at their schools was worth $50k+/yr already. TU is nearing that figure vs. the OU or OSU $20k unless your out of state and then it jumps to like $30k. Tennessee is $25k in state, $45k out of state (who the hell from out of state would want to go there then??). Tennessee has on their main Cost page for students added $1400 for transportation and $4000 for "personal expenses"...I am sure that this is some insane figure someone came up with to put on there to meet the ADs needs for justifying the "total cost of attendance" thing.

This has gotten out of hand and it will absolutely be used in the recruiting wars. Which school is the first to 5 figure stipends for athletes?

TU attendance cost

$57,305 - The full cost of attendance at Tulsa for the 2015-16 academic year, as calculated by the school

$2,500 - The amount a full-scholarship athlete will receive per year for each year he or she receives academic aid

234 - The amount of scholarships awarded to athletes at Tulsa

$585,000 - The total amount to be awarded by the school

That turns into a roughly $155 increase in tuition from every student just to pay for the stipends of the full scholarship players. If you add in the partial scholarship stipends it will be closer to $200 per student. To pay for other students to have cash in their pocket. Ridiculous.

No. It's coming from elsewhere in the athletic budget.

Although it kind of puts my puny GHC contribution into perspective.

I think it was more about dumping off anything CUSA related that was sitting around. I believe the way they held the sale prevented them from having any licensing issues with our old conference.

Jester, I don't think it was that at all. Some had C-USA patches, some did not. Some had bowl patches, some did not and some were more recent uniforms as well. You could almost pick out the years the uni's were from. I think after the last 2 seasons TU is getting all new uni's, locker room gear, etc., sort of a psychological wiping the slate clean for the guys. New gear, new locker room, new image, new attitude, new season.

Good info. Is that total amount of $585k solid or a guesstimate?
Even though we may have 234 scholarship awards given, I'm guessing near half are not full scholarships...they are partials given in minor sports??? Football and Bball are the only two mandated full rides. Still a big amount regardless

Thoughts in random order based on comments above:

Treating the payments as student loans to be paid back would require an administrative infrastructure that would exceed the cost of the money loaned. So that doesnt make sense.

New coach = New unis. Plain and simple. Same thing happened with Krags, Graham and Blankenship. They've got their deals and don't want to be wearing hand me downs.

Stead was on the committee that was responsible for passing this rule. Our amount will be appropriate and won't be skimpy compared to other similar programs. Im cool with that.

If anyone doubts that this isn't about marketing and recruitment, plain and simple, take a second look at that list above. Nearly every school in the Top 20 or so is located in places you don't really want to go to as an 18 year old. Its an enticement to go to that school. Knoxville is a dump in the middle of nowhere and desperate to put their team back together. Miami, Boston, Atlanta are some of the most expensive places in the country to live, but the schools Miami, BC, and George Tech and/or their athletic programs sell themselves. So the money is lower. Stillwater oughta be $8000 or more.

That came from a TU or TW release a while back so it should be pretty accurate.

That 234 scholarship number is full or full equivalent ships. For men we have 85 football, 13 basketball, 10 soccer, 4.5 golf, 4.5 tennis. That's 117 full men scholarships. You obviously may have those 10 soccer ships spread out between 15 or so players (same for golf and tennis). Double that for the women and you get to that magic 234 number. There may be some minor differences per year or per sport but I think those numbers are pretty close.

Volleyball is also an equivalency sport earning you have 12 full scholarships to give out. There's one more but it is obscure, something like women's gymnastics or something.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't two half scholarships count as an equivalency for most of the Olympic Sports? I agree with TU Hurricane. You have to have the same number for each sex whether part of that number is 2 X 0.5 or full.
