Donovan is 210 lbs but only 6% body fat.......making him get to 195 means loss of muscle/explosiveness......

Work on his quickness and defense.....but don't take away his main strength as a player....he's a bull guard, a linebacker on the court.....let him be.

Ok,he's listed as 210 on one site and 180 on another. If he's 210,I have to agree with the op.

I think I will trust the coaches on this one. Mitchell has to be quick enough to guard a SG and losing 15 pounds will help. I do not think weight at the guard spot is that important. The question is will it affect his ability to finish at the rim which is more a overall strength issue. Let's face it he did struggle on defense and quickness was an issue.

He did it with Jones and he was the **** on Defense his senior year. I think he will be way better next year based on all previous guards leap from freshman to sophomore years!

Mitchell has the athleticism and mental fortitude to be a lockdown defender. He could guard the 1,2 or 3 positions.

I played a lot of different sports in my time and losing and gaining weight was part of the process. Weight is something that will have a dramatic effect on your game and I have to agree with CRP on this one.

Yes.....losing fat weight when needed is very beneficial to any athlete....

Taking a mazaratti like Mitchell.....who by Pitino's admission is only 6 % body fat......and making him lose 15 lbs is going to highly affect his game.....All he needs to do is improve his handle and he will be impossible to keep out of the lane because of his strength.

Pitino is caught up in these numbers on weight like its the 70's........Athletes are bigger now...

Thank God he didn't do this to Chane.......we wouldn't have the 2013 banner.....

Wrong. Chane needed the weight because he was an undersized PF. Plus Chane did what Chane wanted.

Muscle doesn't automatically give you exposiveness. Do you see body builders jumping out of the gym? Do you look at a body builder and think "wow he must be really fast".

Losing 15 pounds will not stop him from jumping as high and he will be faster. He will be better for it. Mitchell has the potential to be lighting fast. He could kill it on the high pick and rolls if he has a faster first step.

For a guard, I'll take fast over strong. Compared to our recent past teams, this year's team was kinda slow getting the ball up the court and not very explosive in transition. OP is way off on this one. Mitchell needs to be faster and replacing 20 lbs of fat for 5 lbs of muscle will really make a big difference. Here's the recent wrap up of players by Pitino. No mention of body fat %

Donovan Mitchell - weighed 210 lbs. this year, way too much for a 6-2 guard. He will get down to 195 and it will make him quicker on defense. Not sure he can jump any higher as is he already a freak athlete. Focus: defense, ball handling, and consistency in his jump shot.

This makes no sense....if he is only 6% bodyfat......there is not 20 lbs to lose without getting into unhealthy levels of bodyfat....

look at Brogdon from VA ...he dominated us and he is closer to 220.....

I think this might be a little bit blown out of proportion. If you think Rick is going to ruin Donovan then you're not paying attention. He knows what's right for him. I'll trust Rick and his staff over anyone else.

Brogdon is 6-5. Not sure how tall DM is. I have seen RP say he is 6-1 & on another occassion 6-2. He is listed on the roster as 6-3.
Looks shorter than 6-3 to me. If he is 6% body fat I agree with you, losing weight might not be a good thing. He did not look overweight to me last year.

If he loses the weight the right way I can't imagine it hurting him. He can lose some weight and still be a bull guard.

Didn't Chane lose weight before the 2013 season. He was definitely in better shape than the previous year. He struggled with stamina his freshman year and didn't nearly as much his sophomore year.

NOW I remember why I paid extra for the premium board and stopped reading the UK, Pitino hated infested free board. Really don't understand why you follow the program if you believe the coach Pitino or otherwise ruins the players. I guess in 2013 he was lucky enough to have players he couldn't ruin.

Pitino to ruin Mitchell or turn him into an NBA draft pick after his Soph year.

Good call champ.

Herb, where'd you hear Mitchell was 210?
That was the big news over the summer. CRP wanted DM to lose weight from 210 to 190 which he apparently did. Since CRP is commenting about it now, I assume DM has regained his weight. The 210 is what he played at last season.
