Dix took a huge step forward tonight and it seems the law of averages is finally working in Sandfort’s favor. One thing that kind of flew under the radar was Kris kind of disappearing later in the second half (despite a great game overall, mind you), but Sandfort and Rebraca played big roles in bringing the team home. Team needs multiple guys to continue to step up

Arguably just as encouraging is that Mulvey logged 13 minutes tonight… and actually kind of held his own? Didn’t do anything special, but ran the floor on offense which led to a bucket, had a couple of nice passes (a really good feed from the post to the perimeter to an open Kris, who missed the three), and wasn’t a total liability on defense. Could still afford to crash the boards better, and his hand eye coordination (read: catching the ball) could use some work, but the improvement is noticeable. Good for him!

Dix should get a lot of credit for setting up the 4 point play that ultimately tied the game-all the credit to Sandfort but he doesn’t get the look right at the 3-pt line without Dix getting a little penetration and not giving away his intentions…he’s good and only going to get better

WOW. Iowa never could quite get over the hump. Michigan kept shooting like crazy and that three-point Michigan lead would go up to seven or nine, then down to five, then up to seven again . . . it was like that the entire game. And then, still down four with 20 seconds to go and the game slipping away, gunslinger Payton Sandfort, with the great assist from freshman Dix, tosses in the three, gets fouled, hits the free throw, and finally, the game is tied.

But Michigan has the last possession, and you just KNOW they're gonna pull somethin' outta their . . . and win it at the buzzer . . . Instead, Iowa uses its fifth and sixth fouls brilliantly and sends the game to OT with terrific, game-on-the-line defense. DEFENSE!

What a game. What a win. Everybody who played had a hand in it, but special praise must go to Dix for outstanding shooting and all around play. He was fabulous. Riley Mulvey, considering this was the first time he's played significant minutes, was terrific too. He worked on defense, grabbed a couple rebounds, and looked good with a couple buckets around the basket. Without his help, Iowa loses.

And then there's Sandfort. After a poor first half when his shooting seemed to revert to his earlier woes, he played a fabulous second half, hitting crucial three after crucial three, topped off by not one but TWO spectacular plays late, the four-point play that sent the game to OT, and the rebound on which he was undercut and the FTs he hit in OT.

The Hawkeyes seemed destined to lose this one, but they would have none of it. With Rebraca continuing his amazing play, with Murray doing his thing, with CMac playing a steady game, with Sandfort and Dix and Mulvey coming to the rescue, it was another team win in which Sandfort was the hero. No one knows what the rest of the season will bring, but man, it's impossible to say too many nice things about that win last night.

BTW: Gotta mention the poor officiating. Once again we see that Iowa is one of the few teams around the Big Ten and the nation that never has a "home court" advantage when it comes to the refs. If Iowa could just get a neutral game at home, it would be awesome. Instead, the Hawkeyes get the short end of it most of the time, including last night. Dickinson, like Kofi before him, travels multiple times every game. He was called for it once last night. I'm not sure Rebraca committed a single foul, but he was tagged with three. But I am sure that Michigan was over the back of Iowa players who blocked out beautifully on multiple occasions without a whistle being heard. Lots of Michigan contact in general simply was not called, yet Iowa--and Fran--stayed with it and won anyway, although it took a tremendous effort to beat both a hot-shotting Michigan team and their three accomplices. Just IMHO, of course.

Not a very impressive throughout regulation. However, the effort to get the game tied at the end and to take the game over in OT was about as good as you'll ever see. Can't say enough about the monumental effort of Sandfort in that 2nd half. His meteoric mid-season rise is something to behold, as well as something we desperately needed. This team is starting to look very promising. What a game!

I also want to commend Josh Dix for his impressive play off the bench. He showed great poise, accurate shooting and really took care of the basketball well too. His awareness on court made a difference too.

He didn’t get punched in the face. Basketball move and unfortunate contact. Don’t be a Michigan fan saying sandfort wasnt fouled. Refs were fine. Awesome game.

It will be interesting to see how Fran uses Dix moving forward. His handles, decision making and execution were flawless on a big stage against an opponent playing in your face D. Having Dix, Sandfort, and Kris on the floor makes Iowa a really tough guard when they are moving the ball. I hope Perkins can regain his confidence but he is hurting the team on both ends with abysmal shooting, lazy defense, and his overall pissed off demeanor. Ulis plays within himself and has been able to knock down a few shots so I see him as better option than Perkins at PG. Maybe Perkins needs to play off the ball until he gets his flow back.

Props to Mulvey. Dude came in and provided quality minutes. Fran has to get him more PT if he wants Rebraca to have any legs left for the late season push. I am not sure what Fran's rationale has been for not playing him more as he runs the floor well and can cover more space defensively than Josh. If he can play good defense, rebound, stay vertical and affect shots with his size, he will add value. Any points he scores will be an added bonus.

Good post. I read some articles from Michigan papers and Howard complained about the disparity in fouls called and free throws. Howard and the players said they gave the game away and did not give Iowa any credit. I understand that in the moment after losing a game like that you are going to be pissed off but not giving Iowa any credit smacks of being sore losers.

Dix has been interesting. He has shown poise and confidence beyond most freshmen. He certainly doesn't seem awed by the big moment, and Fran trusted him enough to have him in during critical junctures of the Michigan game.

The mental turn-around for Sandfort the past 2-3 games is so stark. I haven't read an interview where he or Fran have addressed it. If others have, what was said? He certainly is not a defensive stopper, but my impression is that his success on the offensive end has led to more aggression on the defensive end.

With Mulvey, my impression was Michigan was going at Rebraca to get fouls called, but didn't have the same urgency of playing through the post with Mulvey in the game. Him not picking up fouls too quickly allowed him to use his athleticism on the offensive end. Big offensive board or two at critical junctures.

Not that unusual. Coaches will usually "give credit" to the other team, and then go on about the things their team didn't do.
