Ava Jones is such a heartstrings type case. I wish it wouldn't of happened but you can't go back. That she has continued to run into medical roadblocks and setbacks is awful. She hasn't complained, she has continued to work and tried to get back to the game she loved she just wasn't ever cleared to play. She has done everything right and gotten the short straw. Even still she doesn't have to allow it to define her. Whether sports or life, ultimately its your decision to wake up and what you are going to make of it. You can either let life knock you down, or make the best of the life you have been given even if its a ****** draw.

How many years did the DUI person get sentenced who caused all this?

70 years. But who knows when he might be eligible for parole.

From the linked story:

"Whether he was sentenced to 70 years or 50 years or 25, it's not gonna bring Trey back. It's not gonna fix Ava and I of our injuries," Amy Jones said to KAKE News after the sentencing was complete.

Before the accident, Ava dominated the basketball court at Nickerson High School. She had signed to play her beloved sport at the University of Iowa just days before the accident, but the injuries she received in it ended her career.

Regarding the traumatic brain injury her daughter is still suffering from: "She's not the girl we've known for 17 years. She's struggling to know who she was, who she is now, and who she's going to be in the future," added Jones in her statement.

Ava Jones was 17 when her life changed in an instant. Just two days after committing to play Division I basketball, she and her family were hit by a car driven by someone under the influence. The crash killed her father and left Ava and her mother critically injured. After months of recovery, Ava faced another unimaginable challenge—a stage four Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis at 20 years old. In this powerful conversation, Ava shares how she found resilience through grief, therapy, and community. She talks about learning to walk and talk again, processing loss after her father’s death, and what it means to truly begin again.
  • The night that changed Ava’s life forever (10:00)
  • Learning to live without basketball (20:00)
  • How therapy helped her reconnect with her emotions (18:00)
  • Facing stage four cancer and finding hope (28:00)
  • Choosing to live fully after unimaginable loss (34:00)

What we will never know what might have been.
I was sitting in Palm Springs airport Thursday and started talking to a Kansas Jayhawk fan. He brought up Ava and said his son had coached her in lower level sports. He said she was the best at everything. Said there wasn't a boy that could throw a ball like her.

Man, I would have enjoyed watching Ava play and grow under the Hawkeye coaches

Her story is an incredible and I'm sure it won't be the last that we hear about her. She seems like an amazing young lady.
