I’ve often thought about those first waves of soldiers that ran onto those beaches into machine gun fire. Similar to the waves of soldiers who perished during WW1. I don’t know how someone can do that. It’s essentially suicide. I don’t think I could have done that. Now of course, the weaponry exists to blow up the world for all purposes, so I don’t know if that will be repeated. For me, the lesson is, let’s use our rational and reasonable minds to avoid this in the future.

The guys I've talked to about it that actually went through it claimed they had no options.

72,000 posts, 50 years an RU sports fanatic, 25 years on this board.
My dad’s 100th birthday celebration comes and goes, his day at Yankee Stadium yesterday honoring his D Day participation comes and goes.
I haven’t posted in weeks, yet not ONE person on this site thought to say something or acknowledge I exist in remembrance of my father, except for a select few I’m on a group private DM chat with.
I’ve shared life experiences, anecdotes and insights for all those years.
God Bless all of you, my last post.
Gonna get the “look at me” crowd accusing me i know….I’ve always thought of this board as part of my family.
I've always enjoyed your posting here, Dale. But it does seem very much like "look at me".
I had major surgery at the beginning of April and didn't post here for nearly two months. Never once did I wonder if I was missed by anyone on this board.

Sorry, I thought you went on a weed and drug bender during the 2 months. Hope you are doing well! :)

It's been rough. 75 years old and this was my first time at a hospital for anything but outpatient stuff. Had a rough go with something called post-operation delusions for a week or so. Was in the hospital for three weeks. They were worried about me for a while I later learned. I'm still not done with this. Several issues that are gonna take a little more time.
But there's every reason for optimism. At least that's what all of the doctors say.
Anyway, I did miss the board. I never thought the board would miss me though.

Postoperative delusions. I've never heard of that before. It's also called Delirium which I've heard of but just the name of famous, delicious Belgium Ale. Now I fully understand the meaning.
Did you have delusions of being a Mets fan? That would be scary! Lol.
Seriously, I hope you recover quickly and return to the board more often.

I've told this story many times. I once went to a Memorial Day event and the guest of honor was a soldier who was in the 101st Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge and Bastogne in particular. After the event I went to shake his hand and thanked him for his service and sacrifice. He looked at me with kind of a bewildered look and just shrugged his shoulders and said "Somebody had to do it."
The Greatest Generation indeed.

I did a Normandy tour last month. Being on top of those cliffs and then on Omaha Beach, it was hard to fathom what it was like for that 1st wave of soldiers coming ashore and many were just in their late teens and early 20's. I'm sure they were scared to death but they showed courage and did what they were trained for.

The board is too big to miss anyone, so definitely not a personal thing whatsoever. Hope things continue to improve! :)

just stay healthy enough so no one will miss you because you're posting often , but some might wish you would go away because they don't like what you say
That said, hope your health is good enough so you can make yourself a pest here posting every day or close to it and only miss posting because your doing something you enjoy
Be well and stay that way

I was in Bastogne last April. The people of the area are still thankful to the 101st. Not easy to get to but worth the extra effort, definitely!!

Joel Fertig, the former Rutgers team dentist for 45 years, is credited with introducing mouthpieces to high school football programs throughout the East.

In World War II, he was a prisoner/doctor in Nazi prison camps helping Allied prisoners.

His last post was up on two boards. So it was like a last post two-fer. I’m only giving him **** because he’s from Montclair and I’m from Bloomfield. The annual Bloomfield-Montclair Thanksgiving game was a little version of Rutgers-Princeton.

I had 3 great uncles in Poland. Two were killed fighting the Germans, the third survived a “Work” camp.

"I" did not. If you have an issue take it up with Richie.
I was just curious. It's really not that important.
BTW, when I said "you" I meant the plural....the moderating team. Not you individually.

I had never heard of it either...until I was done with it after about a week. I've been told it's most often experienced by older folks, particularly those who are having their first operation. That's me.
I've struggled to put into words what the experiences were like. I guess there are some similarities to tripping on acid or mescaline. I never had a bad experience back in my tripping days with those two. These were way, way longer and dark. And quite disturbing for the most part. All while you're laying in a hospital bed.
I'd rather just forget everything about them.
It was rough. April was not kind to me.

Glad you got past that. Keep recovering!
I've had my third surgery in 5 years. First was a burst hernia and the sepsis that followed during the pandemic. They had to test me if I had Covid which at that time took hours while I was in severe pain. Asked the doctor the next morning what would have happened if I was positive and why was your team keep yelling on the phone. Simply the 8 person surgery team all had Covid already so why the wait.
2nd surgery was hernia again because you can't do the mesh when I was infected so bad from the first time. 3rd was April also. Gallbladder removed.

I am named after the man that saved my grandfather's life on D-Day +1. The man died on D-day +2. I was able to visit his grave as a teenager on my first trip to Normandy.
