Clearly you didn’t read the whole string. I was the one who stated point blank that Evan didn’t earn the starting role and had opportunities to do so in 2022.

But that said - what you stated about the Wisconsin game in 2023 was not accurate. It was not true that Gavin led us down the field to the red zone and Even just punched it through the end zone. That game, on that day, didn’t go down like that. Evan came in and threw 2 great throws for a TD on a day GW was not only awful but banged up and we chose, down 24-6 (in a game there was no chance we were going to win) not to give him a second series entering the 4th quarter and went back to Gavin. There is no explanation to that other than the obvious - Greg didn’t want the distraction of any QB controversy buzz or locker room drama. I actually understand his thinking broadly because I agree with what RU4Life said. Both of them were flawed and ultimately it was going to be Kyle and our D leading us so we simply didn’t need that drama from a game that was already a loss barring a miracle.

It makes sense from that perspective, but as I said - if Evan Simon was my kid I’d have been pissed on that day for sure.
How do you just jump to the conclusion that "Gs didn't want the distraction" ? And then say it's obvious? The fact that it's a completely different offense doesn't factor into this? Hey maybe you're right, I just tend to go with what makes sense to me..

Only McCord at Ohio St had a better game vs national champ Michigan in 2023.
Gavin had a QBR of 84.5
AK had a QBR of 7.4 at Minn.

GW had skills not used and flaws not coached off.
I never say GW was great at RU - just that RU stinks for QB dev.
Savage was best QB I saw at RU in 20 years and coaches found ways to eff that up.

RU should just consider running the option because every year there's is some unit that wrecks things
Pacheco could barely cross LOS the OL was so bad, and Savage became a concussed basket case with bad ribs.
Vedral never passed for another TD once Cruickshank went down midseason (despite Melton the other WR)

GW did win 7 games and would have had a better season with 2024 WRs
I cant even say for sure RU had better record in 2024 because the boss teams were missing
RU won 3 of last 4 but if there was the usual murderer's row (PSU, OSU, UM) at season's before those 4 games no doubt RU would have been physically beat-up as usual

“I think you always have to judge a quarterback based upon what the record is and how the team does,” Teel said. “At the end of the day, the kid did win seven games this past year, and he did lead the team to a bowl win. Overall, I think he did a great job.

You must realize how ridiculous this sounds. He executed a rehearsed design play in the opening drive for a 69 yard TD.

He threw for 110 yards outside of that and a pick. Completed only 11 passes total in the game. Rushed for 28 yards on 6 attempts which isn’t awful but is far from great or indicative of any great future potential.

I had to double check the date of these posts. Anyway Gavin Wimsatt had a ton of potential when at Rutgers, and I think the coaches were waiting for the passing light bulb to go on, which it didn't. It did blink on and off at times, he made some great throws. His legacy is beating Miami, which was a great game. Wimsatt gets one more try this year and it will be interesting to see how he does. I hope he does great.

I’m saying that is the only logical reason not to give your second string QB another series in that situation. Nothing else makes sense. Gavin was hurt. Came back in after getting banged up. In a game where his back up relieved him by going 2 for 3 and a TD during meaningful PT (cut the score to 17-6). We give up another TD and now the score is 24-6. I challenge you to come up with another explanation for why it made sense to bring back a banged up QB who was having an awful game to close out a game that was basically out of reach when in fact your back up had actually performed better than your starter in this one game anyway. Here’s a hint. It was not because he thought Gavin could or would lead us to a come back in that game.

And no, I’m not agreeing with Shelby who proclaimed that Gavin was just the poster child and promised the starting role. I don’t think it was in any way like that. Both of them had limitations and there were optical reasons related to future recruiting, perception and other things to lean towards Gavin. And those reasons aren’t wrong. They are fine, because Evan wasn’t actually good either. But the thing is - the things we don’t see behind the scenes don’t even matter in this situation. Even if Gavin was killing it in practices running circles around Evan, on that day against Wisconsin, Evan was clearly the better QB. It would’ve been hard to do much worse than Gavin performed that day.

If not to coddle Golden Gavin, why do you think Simon didn’t get another series ?

Because the coaches didn't believe in him, because the game script was designed for wimsatt, because Simon isn't a threat to run for a 70 yard touchdown, because wimsatt was the second leading rusher. I guess none of that makes sense to you guys? Seems obvious to me...but like I said maybe it was done to hide Evan Simons golden arm...I guess we will never know...maybe if he can lock down the job at Temple this year there will be a few games he shows those talents. Idk if you guys saw the games that Simon started at Rutgers but I didn't see what you guys saw apparently..

Hmmm I wonder how you see wimsatts Michigan game in this way. Yet the 34 yard "drive" from Simon is what you rave about..I guess this is just for 💩 and giggles. Lol you come up with some good conspiracy..

Sad to see posters continue to post opinion as fact, and cite to a prior opinion to support this confusion. Richie says what he observed--thats an opinion. If one got into a brief GS period of practice and saw something and drew a conclusion from that, thats an opinion. Statistics are not opinions. Perhaps that helps. I gather delving deeper on topics would reveal simialr confusion, but have it and enjoy opinions.

Show your statistics from B1G games for Sheppard, you are clueless & delusional if you think I saw a brief practice to draw my decision on Sheppard more like 20+ practices & multiple scrimmages

It’s quite ironic that he’s giving an opinion based on HS statistics that are years old now and claiming they are facts. He keeps dancing around it because he has nothing relevant to present.

Another reason to take these as less than fact is if he were to say things Schiano didn't like then he is probably not on the practice sidelines in the future. I think these reports have some sugarcoating and party line bent to them.

Figure it out, legend.

Teel graduated from RU. Snyder and Savage graduated from somewhere else, thus ex-RU.
I get what you’re trying to say , but better way to word it.

Did you consider Mike McMahon an ex Rutgers quarterback when he was playing in the NFL? Because he was not a Rutgers graduate at the time

Who said that? Actually - what was pointed out was sort of the opposite. GW’s stats (which on average are indesputably poor to date), don’t seem to be impacted much one way or the other by opponent talent level. He sucked against Wagner and Temple types just as much as BIG opponents.

His rating in the one game you pointed to against Michigan was vastly inflated by one single design play executed in the first drive of the game for 69 yards. Arm strength is not his problem and so he’s been consistently solid with executing rehearsed first drive pass plays. Unfortunately, this only underscores how unreliable he becomes in the pass game when teams adjust and the design plays cannot be run as practiced. After that opening drive in the Michigan game, Wimsatt threw for 9 of 19, a pick and less than 110 yards the of the way. Thats in a game that would make his career highlight reel performance wise and this is a QB whose gotten plenty of reps to collect film.

Again - stop dying on a hill for this. He’s not a power caliber QB. It’s TBD whether he’ll even succeed at the lower G5 level.

Do you even know why Simon was in the game ? That plus the TD plus Golden Gavin playing like **** is why you leave him in at least for another series.

Mr. I. T. Kicker didn’t want to risk another Simon TD. Then he’d have a problem. That’s how coaching often works. Fact.

Well this thread is certainly predictable.

Once again Schiano has ruined the career of the best player on the team or forced the best player on the team to transfer. In this case Ajani Sheppard is obviously going to win the Heisman at another school and join ex-RU Heisman winners Gavin Wimsatt and Art Sitkowski.

We're even getting proclamations from the legendary douche!

And was that Bruce Springsteen posting from his exile - what country is he in again?

Let's be serious, we all know Hayden Rettig was screwed! He's the best QB Rutgers has ever had, and obviously Schiano was holding him down. (Wait for it...)

But you know what was mighty curious ? Ryan Cubit over Chad Schwenk.

Curious? Not at all. The prior coach's quarterback versus the new coach's quarterback who was also the offensive coordinator's son. Nothing curious about that at all, just what you'd expect in a situation like that.

Savage was best QB I saw at RU in 20 years and coaches found ways to eff that up.

Once again you're rewriting history:

PS - No one effed up Savage other than Savage. @csphi

Even Tom Savage has come out and said he made a huge mistake leaving Rutgers. And he tried to transfer back to Rutgers but was denied by the NCAA, which is why he ended up at Pitt.

And with the Tom Savage mention, that means I can post one of my favorite RU Football videos of all time:

Woody Hayes appreciates Gavin’s running ability and Gavin’s running threat saved Schiano from having a disastrous season. AK (BigTen accuracy and arm strength with decent “first down” mobility) is the right QB for a team with a good pass protection OLine and dangerous receivers, both of which Schiano now has.

"Even Tom Savage has come out and said he made a huge mistake leaving Rutgers. And he tried to transfer back to Rutgers but was denied by the NCAA, which is why he ended up at Pitt."
Tom might have been sorry for leaving his friends at RU but in 2010 he was getting beat to a pulp with vocally angry parents
The OL was bad in 2009 when Savage was knocked out (had a serious concussion) vs Florida International.

RU gave-up 8 sacks in 2006 and 11 in 2007 - 19 in two years.
In 2009 RU allowed 40 sacks..
Then in 2010 the OL was historically bad and set a D1 sacks allowed record at 61.
There was a drastic collapse of an OL that RU had failed to maintain
No top QB wants to play behind a hideous OL

Early in 2010 season savage was knocked from N, Carolina game with rib injury.
The following week he was knocked out of Tulane with hit by linebacker Trent Mackey on Tom's throwing hand .
Along with the injuries were the constant hits:
I know what a punchy and beat-up player looks like and in his last start Savage looked like a zombie

From October 2010 "You definitely take it personally when your starting quarterback goes down," Barbieri said. "It's not just the 13 sacks. You also have to take into account the hits he has taken. Those have been way too many."

All this was going on when concussion hysteria was peaking and Savage's parents were angry with Schiano and talking to the media. Schiano would not let Savage leave for Miami and a year latter the Savage drama was still in media

The great start to a QB career (frosh AA) crashed/burned because a 2006 Coach of the Year couldn't build a functioning OL. If Savage had taken an offer from PSU, Michigan, FSU, Georgia, TN he might have been a 1st rounder

Of course Savage's subsequent concussion susceptibility got worse and wrecked his NFL days

Lay off the wood chips, Kyle Monangai and the defense is what Greg rode to the bowl game that season. Gavin was not a significant contributor unless you only count scripted plays and ignore everything else.

GW has 3 more rushing TDs than KM in 2023 (he wasn't great on goal).
He lead B1G in QB rush yds/tds - records at RU
I understand the flaws of GWs passes but he wasn't the worst recruit in RU history.
When ND, Oregon, Washington, USC and other passing teams offered GW they must have seen something
ND I know felt they could improve his passing.
The story is GW failed RU and I say it was the other way around

Tom leaving RU was 💯 on Tom
You literally have zero idea what you are talking about and was a major reason why he wanted to come back…you have no idea how his family felt about GS….no idea how he wound up at Arizona

And concussions had literally NOTHING to do with his hanging it up in the NFL

It’s amazing how people make **** up based on message board hyperbole

Yes Tom wanted to leave RU with parents pushing him.
That doesn't mean Tom wasn't cursed with one of worst OLs in history and was being beat-up bad
Good programs dont go from 19 sacks in 2 years to 101 in 2 years - that's a bad team.
RU's 2005 moonshot beginning ended in 2010 with disastrous season (including EL in that).
The fairy dust was no more and in 2025, 2006 is still RUs best season - almost 20 yrs ago

Coached 3 different American Legion teams, 2 in NY., including one to a championship game in a single elimination tourney; and one in NJ; also coached HS football.
My daughter played field hockey at Georgetown & a son played lacrosse at Holy Cross; my other son played soccer & baseball & ice hockey in a Jersey men's league; one of my cousin's was captain of the Marist rowing team & another was a college ice hockey goalie. I'm 82 yrs old & have been heavily involved in athletics my whole life & was always a student of the game. So don't lecture me about athletics.

Great story but you really have no clue. There are people on this board that know Tom and his family and have spoken at length in the past on the situation. Hint - It's not what you're talking about.

Was the above before or after our resident genius HC Mr. I. T. Kicker used Sanu as QB1 in our widely-feared Wildcat offense and had Savage only come in on 3rd and 8 or more ?

That’s three dimensional chess right there: put your best player at a position he can’t play and take the only player who can take advantage of your best player’s talent and have him on the sideline most of the game.

Brilliant beyond words.

Yes Tom wanted to leave RU with parents pushing him.
That doesn't mean Tom wasn't cursed with one of worst OLs in history and was being beat-up bad
Good programs dont go from 19 sacks in 2 years to 101 in 2 years - that's a bad team
You are completely full of ****
I used to live in Springfield, PA

No I'm giving all facts and media tells the tale.
"Knowing" a dead coach means nothing - the hits concussions, rib and hand injuries were real
Too many of ya'll get emo and hostile and it gives RU bad karma tbh

"Tom Savage situation turning ugly?"

The great start to a QB career (frosh AA) crashed/burned because a 2006 Coach of the Year couldn't build a functioning OL. If Savage had taken an offer from PSU, Michigan, FSU, Georgia, TN he might have been a 1st rounder

Total and unadulterated BS. Tom Savage chose to spend the summer in Avalon, on the beach after his true freshman year, rather then practice with his teammates, because his girlfriend Leigh would not allow him to be in New Brunswick while she was home in Cape May so they went to the beach every day, while his teammates practiced together, like every other team. You want to know why Tom was not allowed to transfer to certain other schools including Miami.....the reason was that Tom's Dad was secretly contacting schools before the season even started & during the season, about Tom transferring, those coaches, fearing NCAA violations contacted Schiano & told him what was happening. Tom's Dad did the same thing with Tom's older brother Bryan when he played for Wisconsin & Bryan ended up at Hofstra due to Mr. Savage's meddling. Sophomore year Tom was not in shape nor was he & his teammates on the same page in the playbook, due to Tom not practicing all summer. I was told there were serious discussions by the staff about suspending Tom for his sophomore year due to his absence from workouts all summer. I won't even start about what went on with Savage & his girlfriend in the Hale Center during both his Freshman & Sophomore years that got his G/F banned by the staff from entering the building or the confrontations she had with Schiano about Tom spending too much time with football & not enough with her.

Notice how you left out my relationship with his family

And just because the media reported something does that make it all true?
Do you believe everything you read on the internet?

Again you're rewriting history.

Yup, it's not worth rehashing everything that led into the 2010 season and what occurred during it. Suffice it to say that TS made his own bed and later owned up to it.

Of course it didn't help that KC decided to go to a spread offense when the OL had been recruited to play in a pro-set.

I have no idea who you are or what your relation is with Savage fam.
On the field I saw a talented QB (Kelly loved him) getting beat-up behind an atrocious line - could not block for run either.
The stats/injuries are real
The tension between coaches and Savage fam was also real and in media.
There is no question the Savage chapter ended badly no matter what he said years later.

"Schiano recruited Chas Dodd hard, making two recruiting visits to South Carolina to try to woo the young quarterback. The Knights obviously needed a backup to Savage; Dodd was awarded the starting job mid-season.

It has been speculated that Tom Savage's father was unhappy at the way his son was treated. He stated that Rutgers "went with the kid [Dodd] when he had the hot hand," but said that the starting job "should have been" reclaimed by Savage when Dodd started to slow down. It has also been speculated that the father had "gotten into it" with some fans who were booing and deriding Tom during a game."

Right, so you're going with a writer "speculating" versus someone who's account has been confirmed by others on the premium side.

You should stick to claiming the helmets are blinding players rather than digging an ever bigger hole here where you are literally clueless on the situation.
