Agree AK clear one. Vederal was a gamer and the best shot at the time.

I guess my point is when you get down in the weeds of who earns second string QB spot, it’s always going to be splitting hairs. I don’t think there was a conspiracy theory favoring Evan over Cole. Neither of them were going to start in 2022 and they both knew GW was this star prize recruit brought in and Vedral was coming back (obviously they didn’t know Noah would have that fluke hand injury). Similarly - this is a situation for Sheppard where sticking around means at best fighting for the back up role and your competing against a kid coming in with a lot of hype. I think it’s less of a case of unfair treatment and more that he made a decision in his own best interest. It’s not like he should’ve had more opportunities to play to this point.

Cole is better than Evan Simon but if anyone has a gripe about not getting a shot it’s Evan. He played behind a QB who could not complete a pass.

When an interviewer asked Teel why he never ran he answered "because coach told me not to ."
GS does not like QBs to run by design.
GW rarely got to run between the 20s

GW wasn't a blazer but like Underwood (4.4s at combine) he had a long stride that ate real estate. Once he got beyond LOS he caught defenders by surprise because he got out of their reaches so quickly - could have had 1000+ yds easy with RU's strong run game blocking. As I mentioned, there were a bunch of times broadcast guys expressed surprise he was not running (vs scrambling) more

I guess the UK coach and team had the same issue as GS because he didn’t play much there either with a completely different set of receivers. It’s comical that your still dying on this hill. GW can’t throw.

It is only an issue with posters who think there is some grand conspiracy to keep a better player off the field for some made up reason that does not exist. Keep disregarding the multiple people who attend practice & scrimmages who say the same thing about Sheppard, that he lacks accuracy & that is why he was going to Old Dominion before RU threw him a life line.
It happens, and isn’t a conspiracy. PT promises are made all the time, system fit, and sometimes coaches just get it wrong.

Golden Gavin was a bust. How many years did it take Mr. I. T. Kicker to realize that ?

No matter how hard you try - it didn’t actually go down that way. Schiano never put Gavin ahead of Vedral - Vedral was the clear starter until the day her hurt his hand and couldn’t grip the ball. During the 2022 season, Evan Simon was given ample opportunity to make a case for a starting role the following year due to Gavin’s injury. He had a chance to make a case for himself and didn’t do all that well. 2023 is the only year where it would be appropriate to question whether or not we were playing the best QB based on training camp. To this day, we honestly don’t know the answer to that and we never will. I do feel that Evan should’ve been given more chances that season given how inaccurate Gavin was, but other than that, I don’t see this clear pattern of favors going on for anyone in the program.

Wimsatt didn’t run by design because Kirk felt he couldn’t make the proper read at the mesh point so when he did run those were all pre-snap calls by the OC not some decision made on the field.

They were both flawed QBs. The would have been no difference in the record that year no matter who started between Simon or Wimsatt.

It was easy to see Wimsatt’s issues in the very first game against BC the prior year. Everyone wanted to brush them under the rug saying he was a freshman instead of recognizing they were red flags.

Richie says… As a basis for a conclusion.///

I realize that in this day and age not all are cognizant of opinions versus facts and data but as I said at the top, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. And I find it interesting that at no time did I ever say that AS should be number two, but if one tries to discuss data for the formation of an opinion, they are described with having baseless opinions or agenda. The assumption is that if one bases their conclusion one way that everyone then must also have their own gut feeling opinions in the same way, and don’t want to or cannot discuss the data that’s reviewable and the conclusions that may flow from that.

Any twisting of the data or lack thereof is just twisting as the post speak for themselves. It’s a message board I guess so if someone has a contrary conclusion, then they must be ascribed with some sort of opinion based bias that the asserter has-have at it, but the post describing the data speak for themselves.
You have no data only your opinion & it is obvious you never attended a RU practice or scrimmage that Sheppard was playing in

Oh I completely agree. That said - from Evan Simon’s perspective, it’s fair to say for whatever reason, the staff wasn’t looking to give him a chance to even make a case for taking over the starting position from Gavin based on merit. That one game where Gavin got hurt - Evan came in and led us down the field for a TD and Gavin came in on the next possession says it all in that respect. I do agree on a macro level it would not have mattered for the outcome of the season. However, that’s different from saying Evan didn’t deserve at least another series there.

Alas Kentucky was crappy for reasons.
Gavin makes good throws but struggles with short passes just like Eli Manning does.

I consider Kirk's "mesh point" one of the dumbest things I've seen in offensive football - its shackles.

I agree that there were plenty of times Simon could have come in to relieve Wimsatt. Gavin basically didn’t complete many passes once the scripted plays were over. It’s why his 2nd half stats were usually abysmal.

The team was very fortunate for Monangai to emerge into a force that year and for the solid defense. Otherwise it would have been an awful season.

Richie is at practices, the scrimmages and talks to people within the program. His opinions are based on many data points.

You have no relevant data points to actually form an opinion on. Just what you want to believe.

Regardless - Gavin now spent a full season at a other power conference school and the same issues didn’t go away. He seems to lack, at least at the highest level of football, an ability to make in game reads of any kind. That’s true on both design pass and run situations. Maybe once he steps down a level things will slow down for him and he’ll have some success. Unfortunately, his stats don’t seem to indicate a bias for opponent level.

Only on pre scripted plays that can be executed exactly as planned. Basically - he’s okay for the first and second series of games and then passing is a disaster.

Yeah - and it’s not so much a matter of “could have”. In those situations, it’s unlikely the game outcome would’ve changed. But Evan Simon’s parents certainly would’ve had a valid complaint if they felt their son wasn’t given a fair chance to try to compete that season following that one series. Thats all.

In Greg’s defense, I’m not sure anything good could’ve come for us out of keeping Evan in the game other than doing what was right for Evan based on his strong performance that one drive. Think about it - we’re losing, and not likely to actually come back and win the game regardless. So now suppose Evan comes in and does pretty well. Now what? Now you just have a locker room in flux. From a recruiting perspective, it was important for Greg to go out of his way to give Gavin opportunities to succeeed at rutgers after convincing the kid to give up his last year of high school.

Who’s trying ? Not claiming it did. I have no opinion on AS. I was speaking generally in response to the poster who said all decisions should be accepted at face value re: the depth chart is always in order of performance. It doesn’t always happen that way. It’s not a conspiracy theory.

But you know what was mighty curious ? Ryan Cubit over Chad Schwenk.

He would not have lasted the season if he was running that much. He was a good runner but he was not as good as Kyle. So who you want carrying the ball?

Lol the team was already in the red zone when Simon got in...he threw a 2 yard td pass...wimsatt lead them to the red zone...the offense that year leaned heavily on the QB run....legit question because I don't know, how is Simon doing at Temple? Where is wimsatt playing this year? I guess it's the off-season and people need something to talk about? Ajani Sheppard was a 2 star that played highschool football in long Island lol

Actually - you are wrong on all fronts.

1) We weren’t in the red zone. Evan took over at the Wisconsin 34.

2) Gavin clearly didn’t lead them to the red zone since they weren’t there, but to get the facts exactly right - the drive started on the RU 43 yard line. So Gavin, as you put it, led us for 23 yards on that drive while Evan was the QB for the final 34 (60% aka the majority of the drive).

Oh yeah - let’s not forget just how bad the offense performed to that point under Gavin’s leadership as you put it. The only time we moved the ball at all in the first half was on the drive that ended with that gut wrenching pick 6 Gavin threw from the Wisconsin 6 yard line. Meanwhile - we went 3 and out on 4 other first have possessions. There’s literally no argument that Evan didn’t deserve to at least get one more series. We rushed back an injured Gavin in a game where he had been awful and the back up came in and went 2 for 3 and a TD.

Amazing the way you speak about a 34 yard "drive"... I remember that game and that "drive", there's no way you're bringing that up as confirmation of Simon being deserving of playing time. He showed what he can do in numerous starts. He did not perform well in those starts. The coaches decided to go with a run heavy offense because of a lack of better options to produce competent offense. Simon was a better passer but not to the extent that he could overcome Rutgers' lack of passing infrastructure. Protection, wrs or scheme; the specific game plan from game to game was designed with wimsatt as the QB. Because of the two different styles that game script would not be successful with Simon at QB.

With that being said it looks like Simon will most likely start for Temple this year based on a quick look into the roster. Wimsatt will most likely be in a fight with another transfer at Jacksonville State. So the great Evan Simon vs Gavin wimsatt debate will live on. Guaranteed first good game either one has is posted here like the other kid that went to Buffalo. Lol let's see where Shepard ends up. Sometimes, dare I say, most of the time; it's not a conspiracy guys.

Also, if Sheppard was a good running QB he would have been wimsatts back up. Not a QB with a completely different playing style because you could easily plug him into wimsatts role. It wouldve been him subbing in for wimsatt if the coaches thought he was good .

He was a true freshman that year. He would have only seen the field in a emergency, no other scholly QB available situation.

Facts are wrong context ?
Teel played all his years at RU while Savage did not. One will always be referred to as a RU QB while the other is an ex-RU QB.

The fact that both are not in college football any longer doesn’t make them ex QBs.

I agree with that but the special ones will get that opportunity. Even wimsatt got that opportunity as a true freshman. Got my hopes up when he converted that 4th down lol...but yeah I guess as a TWO STAR you don't get that level of trust. This isn't a hard one to figure out, there is a higher rated QB a year behind him and a solid starting QB with what? 2 years left? If I was one of the coaches I would probably tell him it was in his best interest to transfer if he wants to be on the field..

Maybe he is, I've never seen him play, hopefully at his next stop he will get to prove me and all the rankings wrong. I just don't get why there is 5 page thread on this lol I haven't read through it, just shocked to this conversation still going. I did see some positive write ups about Sheppard quoting his QB trainer. Maybe that's where this is coming from.

That was the emergency situation I mentioned. If you recall Vedral got hurt in that game. Snyder came in & choked so hard that Vedral came back & played hurt. Then they surprised everyone with Gavin on that 4th down & he fooled the fan base into believing that he was a competent QB.

Ajani wasn’t nowhere near ready to take the field as a true freshman.

Clearly you didn’t read the whole string. I was the one who stated point blank that Evan didn’t earn the starting role and had opportunities to do so in 2022.

But that said - what you stated about the Wisconsin game in 2023 was not accurate. It was not true that Gavin led us down the field to the red zone and Even just punched it through the end zone. That game, on that day, didn’t go down like that. Evan came in and threw 2 great throws for a TD on a day GW was not only awful but banged up and we chose, down 24-6 (in a game there was no chance we were going to win) not to give him a second series entering the 4th quarter and went back to Gavin. There is no explanation to that other than the obvious - Greg didn’t want the distraction of any QB controversy buzz or locker room drama. I actually understand his thinking broadly because I agree with what RU4Life said. Both of them were flawed and ultimately it was going to be Kyle and our D leading us so we simply didn’t need that drama from a game that was already a loss barring a miracle.

It makes sense from that perspective, but as I said - if Evan Simon was my kid I’d have been pissed on that day for sure.

Only McCord at Ohio St had a better game vs national champ Michigan in 2023.
Gavin had a QBR of 84.5
AK had a QBR of 7.4 at Minn.

GW had skills not used and flaws not coached off.
I never say GW was great at RU - just that RU stinks for QB dev.
Savage was best QB I saw at RU in 20 years and coaches found ways to eff that up.

RU should just consider running the option because every year there's is some unit that wrecks things
Pacheco could barely cross LOS the OL was so bad, and Savage became a concussed basket case with bad ribs.
Vedral never passed for another TD once Cruickshank went down midseason (despite Melton the other WR)

GW did win 7 games and would have had a better season with 2024 WRs
I cant even say for sure RU had better record in 2024 because the boss teams were missing
RU won 3 of last 4 but if there was the usual murderer's row (PSU, OSU, UM) at season's before those 4 games no doubt RU would have been physically beat-up as usual

“I think you always have to judge a quarterback based upon what the record is and how the team does,” Teel said. “At the end of the day, the kid did win seven games this past year, and he did lead the team to a bowl win. Overall, I think he did a great job.

Wimsatt isn't a P5 QB, end of story. He couldn't deliver balls on time, with any accuracy and had no touch.

PS - No one effed up Savage other than Savage. @csphi

That’s because 3/4 of this three has nothing to do with Sheppard while the other 1/4 is all about the I TOLD YOU SOs.
