So far seems like another of those games where they've no-showed after winning the first 2 in a series. Hopefully they can dig their way out of this hole and back into it.

Nice conversation about the hitting coach holding a meeting with his charges. Agree with his premise. No excuses. Get the job done. And to Ron Darling's point; hard hit rate doesn't matter when the overall contact rate is so bad. Good to know that Chavez called them out.

Not sure what this means, but a career of trying to bat balls says something a bit different.
His AAA data from this year. His the ball hard, barrels it, above average EV, etc. All outcomes that suggest that good hitting numbers are more than mere luck.

He's also hit pretty well in AAA and KBO in the past but was never really given an extended look by previous teams. Only 22 MLB games in his career prior to this. Age obviously a factor in this but maybe something clicked late for him.

Well, yes, but you don't need advanced stats to see those things. His ordinary stats show that, since he's became an uber senior minor league player, he's hit better in AAA. So as a guy who's about to turn 30, we'll eventually see if this sea change in his hitting sticks in the majors.

Looking at the standings, it's tight. You can be in first one week and next , the last wildcard. The Mets have to start playing with a sense of urgency like September of last year. It's not something you turn on at a whim.

Since moving to the #3 spot I believe he has a grand total of two hits....and I think that they were both in the same game
Topic on WFAN this morning. Is Soto really 31 or 32 years old? Very possible with DR birth documents. At least this would allow Cohen to void the contract.

I didn't hear the show this morning. Were they really talking about that? You would think with a Knicks playoff elimination game tonight there would be better topics to discuss. Even NFL OTAs are more interesting.

It was the topic around 7am'ish for a good 10-15 mins (Boomer and Gio). They also discussed ways to get Soto's DNA for testing. :)

The only thing worse than the nonsense discussed on sports talk radio and its constant efforts to keep you listening and require immediate opinions is those whose mental acuity allows them to credit it and share it with others as if it has meaning.

It is just TK2 trying to stir things up. Soto has had a bad start and in 10 years, not a damn one of us are really going to care. The guy will come around.

My question about Soto comes down to one of two things.... and I don't know which it is.
1.) He got his payday. His foot is off the gas. He isn't preparing as hard or working as hard and is sort of coasting after his payday.

2.) He got his payday and he feels immense pressure to live up to it, so he's pushing himself harder and is too stressed to live up to the paycheck.

Slow starts happen in baseball. Look at Judge a couple of years ago. Rizzo in his prime for the Cubs was notorious for slow starts in April. After he turned it around one year, reporters asked him about what adjustments he made and he said, "It became May."

You know Boomer and his gang will go after Soto the same way he went after Cespedes, Lindor, Diaz every chance he gets.

I feel the same way about the podcast craze.

If you played, I value your opinion as you were actually in the arena. And by played and arena, I'm not just talking about sports.

But if you're just a voice talking about it, pass.

That's why I never understood the popularity of WFAN.

Meh. In this instance, Boomer was in the arena, but he's talking nonsense.

Tiki was in the arena, and I feel he doesn't bring a much in terms of interesting insight.

Evan Roberts is strictly talking from the fan perspective and he runs circles around Tiki.

I'd maybe listen to both with regard to Football. But other than that...yawn.

Hitting coaches can have strategies, but ultimately it comes down to what the player is capable of doing. Take for instance hitting a grounder to the right side to advance a runner to third. Is Pete Alonso (I'm just using him as an example) capable of doing that? Has he ever learned how? Has he ever been incented to learn how? Would learning how, earn him even one additional dollar in his next contract?

It's complicated.
I think a lot of hitters are incapable of materially changing their hitting habits. Think about how effective defenses were before full shifts were outlawed. A lot of guys could not go the other way even with half the field basically uncovered.

Yesterday’s wasted effort are games that force Senga and/or Manaea to pitch extra games instead of maybe skipping a start or two. Being up 5-6 games on a playoff spot could lead Mets to give a few starters extra rest.
Phillies went 7-0 vs Rockies. Any loss to these teams should be seen as unacceptable. 3-4 teams in the league are putting out a starting 9 with 3 guys max that should be in the majors right now.

Getting beat 9-4 is a bad look, but the best teams lose to the worst teams every year.
