Looks like second ship to "oops" lose power and hit a bridge.
The ship has made same appearance - as culmination of a training cruise - for 40 years.
The stern of the ship hit the bridge after losing power and drifting with the tides/currents
There were crew up on the masts

I’d imagine it was Tied up at Pier 17 and was backing out and then lost power. Rule of thumb is that every knot of current is equivalent to 10 knots of wind for how current can create a force on a ship. Looks like wind was moving pretty good too. Wind and current combination and close proximity to the bridge makes for short reaction time to drop anchor after losing power.

The East River (estuary with dangers) tide is known to be around 4-5 knots and with regular intervals

From what I am reading online people involved in shipping are ripping the decision to use only one tug, not tied to the ship, with the wind and current conditions both pushing it towards the bridge.

Hey, it's only been there 142 years. You have to give people time to figure things out.

Does the fact that there is even a tug involved dispute the loss of power theory?

It sure seemed like after crashing through the bridge it landed pretty softly on the other side. I thought it was going to crash into the dock as well.

I dunno.

Thanks for the keen assessment, Magellan.

Hope you’re on the NTSB investigation team.

Just wait until DJT finds out the ship’s charts noted Rio de Pancho Villa. ICE will raid the Mexican embassy before sunrise with all staff deported to El Salvador in time for almuerzo.
In Mexican Spanish, lunch is called comida. Main meal of day in Mexico lasting from 2pm to 4 or 5pm. Often lots of alcohol consumed.

Wonder if the ship’s captain was breath tested. The captain is supposed to the last person off the ship. Need to know if he is using that rule to hide in the ship and sober up.

Anyone know what Joe Hazelwood is up to these days?
Never heard of Joe, so I looked him up. At the time of the Exxon Valdez disaster, Joe's drivers' license was suspended for his third driving while intoxicated conviction.

How does a guy with three DWIs and a suspended drivers' license get a gig captaining an oil tanker?

This.
Every Tug Boat operator in the New York waters knows the heights of the Bridges. The Tug looked parallel to the ship in the video
