So I"m in Virginia with the clan for Tyler's graduation. He has a fresh case of Sam's Summer which we broke into tonight. It's bad, the taste is very different. Way too citrusy. Corey came home from Rutgers Newark on Tuesday and we had a couple of Sam Summer's left over from last year, so we have a fair comparison. Even he, an eloquent college student who will drink almost anything, called it, and I quote: "Dogshit!" I only drank half of mine and dumped the rest.

it varies year after year. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Same goes for your favorite Oktoberfest. Some years a very good, others are meh.

That's disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to a few of them when I'm in Boston in July.

Brooklyn Summer Ale is better, but something changed with their distribution over the past 5-6 years and it can be tough to find.

I used to look forward to it back in the 2Ks. Bought a 6-pack a couple years ago and didn't care for it. Not sure if it was the beer or my changing taste buds but I haven't had one since. Prefer Bud in the summer

I got it for my store yesterday. In the Philadelphia 5 counties the wholesale company is called Muller Inc. A big wholesale company that controls Miller Lite, so it should be easily found or request to have brought in.

I've never have had a great beer from Boston Beer Company. I've have had many bad ones. Last years Sam's Oktoberfest was awful.

Thanks for this! I opened up a 12 pack last week and was thinking to myself "I don't remember it being this lemony"...

I wasn't appalled by it, though I'm not the biggest fan of super citrusy beer.

Agreed Boston Beer was able to introduce a certain segment to the “microbrew” but falls way short when it comes to drink ability. In the late 90’s would order it fresh out of college when all else failed because it was everywhere. Now there are way too many options to even entertain.

Love Brooklyn summer!

@WhiteBus what do you recommend for a very light , non-ipa beer for hot summer days?

A nice German Kolsch.
Only 3 from Cologne Germany are exported to the US. Gaffel, Fruh and Reissdorf. Only buy the .5 liter cans.
You can also enjoy a nice Hefe Weizen, or a good wheat beer. Einstok White from Iceland or Tucher Helles Hefe Weizen from Germany are my two summer favorites
Stay away from Blue Moon and others that add orange extract and taste crappy.

Also anyone interested in a beer feat featuring just lagers then go to Log Jammin 5 Beer Festival at Cherry Street Pier with a beautiful view of the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Love a good Kolsch.

Been to Cologne (Koln) a couple times. Fun facts about drinking Kolsch where it was created: 1) they serve it in small glasses with the idea that it should always be consumed cold and don’t want to give it any time to warm up, and 2) servers will assume you want more than one…with each one you consume the server will put a tick mark on your coaster and the only way to stop them from brining more is to put the coaster on top of your glass.

Einstok White Ale is excellent. Pricey but worth it.

Most wheat beers have that funky (but pleasing) finish, Einstok finish is so smooth.

They make exceptional beers. Many of their styles are at the top of my list. Their Scotch Ale, Wee Heavy is the best Scotch Ale I've ever had! Love it! Some of my major breweries friends who are chemistry minded say its because of the smoked barley they use.
Their Doppelbock during the holidays is fantastic as well!

just go to heffeweisen or weiss for the summer... whites like Blue Moon are good summer beers too.. yes, weiss, hefeweizen and white are essentially all the same thing.. though some are very heady compared to others

IMO Pacifico is the best summer beer.

Actually, it’s great in any season.
