So as I was saying

Murphy wouldn't be the worst hire here. At this important time for athletics he is an ally. We can't say the same for other possible candidates. The devil you know

Holloway was really weak imo on many issues including a stance on nil and his handling of a few big issues during his tenure

How does a clickbait rumor like this ever get this far? Rutgers is on the rise and I’m looking forward to an announcement and hopefully a home run AD soon after.

Could not ask for a greater advocate for RU. That said, he can throw his hat in the ring and try to win the nomination. Executive experience is a plus. But I don’t see him running for POTUS.

I think this thread is a case study of how rumors get started. You start with a story which has some aspect of truth, and then cherry pick what parts of the story you want to retain, and what parts you want to ignore.

THE STORY: RU reached out to Gov. Murphy to see if he wished to be considered for the position. Murphy said no. Therefore, Murphy is not under consideration.

BOARD INTERPRETATION: Murphy is under consideration.

The shocking thing is that he was even under consideration. Yes, Governor Kean became President of Drew University (and, from what I know, a good one), but he at least had a background in education.

Are people getting in a huff because he "was" under consideration and not "is" under consideration?

The end point is the same, he was involved (however briefly).

From what I can tell, Mitch Daniels has been mostly a career politician and has been considered a good President at Purdue.

Hollaway turned out to be weak and incompetent.....just like many expected. It's great for RU that he quit.

Anyone remember how McGreey wanted to create a Chancellorship above all teh state schools including Rutgers.. presumably to give him an office to go to after his term as Governor (he had education degrees).

Rutgers giant budget is a political plum too attractive for these politicians to ignore. Same thing happened when the Athletic department wanted to take bond for the $100M south endzone extension.. politicians went nuts that they weren't getting their hands in control of contracts etc.

That we don't have a president or AD by now is a kinda scary indication that something nasty is afoot. If I were them (the politician class) and wanted total control of Rutgers beyond what they have now.. it is the Board of Trustees I would work on corrupting. Not the Board of Governors, which they already have a majority on.. The BoT controls about half of Rutgers assets iirc. If they can get their minions onto the BoT they can have one of those "democratic" votes to do away with the BoT and grant its assets and responsibilities to the BoG.

Mitch Daniels was the successful head of Eli Lilly before he ran and became the successful governor of Indiana.

There's a difference between running something (Eli Lilly) and being a money man like Murphy. In any case, Daniel's appointment went through a search committee with faculty and staff -- from what we can tell, Murphy hasn't been through that process.

Based on the post this morning that now the Committee is extending the goal to hire to summer, I do wonder if it means they're doing diligence for him or someone else, or just at square one.

It probably means a choice will be made at the June BOG meeting. But I wonder how many qualified candidates are going to be willing to leave their present job on such short notice. It's a bad sign.

you know how Rutgers (and presumably every university) votes on and announces new tuition rates and other changes in the summer while students are away for the summer... maybe the powers that be want a vacant president's office this summer for some reason? Or maybe June timing allows the selected candidate to finish up at his/her previous post.

Any reputable academic from outside is going to want to tell his institution he's leaving before June. So this must be an inside candidate or someone who doesn't care how much notice he gives.

My guess is sometime in May the announcement will be made, after Holloway does his final budget hearings. I'm also sticking with my guess it's the Alabama guy.

I really don't care about whether he was a good or bad governor. His pre-gov't success on Goldman Sachs's management committee and leading its investment management committee undoubtedly had him in a position or ready access to big money donors. So putting him in a position to lead the university could have significant upsides to academic and sports. Yes, the article says he hasn't shown any interest. That doesn't really mean anything. But he'd really have to want this job. It comes with a lot of work and criticism. So I doubt he'd want it.

The search committee's goal is to conclude by April 2025, when the Board of Governors will appoint the 22nd President of Rutgers University.

I think there is a big opportunity now for State Us to grab a lot of that Ivy League Federal Research dollars pie if they play their cards right. Would be great if we got someone who thought the same.

Maybe. But there aren't many good presidents/provosts who would want to force their institution into having an acting president/provost. That's why presidents announce their impending departure no later than September of their last year. My guess is that the prime candidate is someone inside Rutgers already or someone who can leave a job on very short notice without causing disruption to his present employer. BTW, the last president of Rutgers to come from inside was Mason Gross in 1959.

Barchi was 66 when he came, but the key advantage for him was that he had run a medical school and so he could effectively carry out the merger with UMDNJ. It's hard for me to imagine that Bell, who will turn 68 this year, wants to jump directly to another presidency. And my guess is that Rutgers is regarded by many as a snakepit, which indeed it is.

Maybe I'm being Kaye (naive), but is it really any more a snakepit than any other University? He got his degrees at Texas A&M and spent time at LSU and Kansas before moving to Alabama. Maybe he wants to round out his resume, having served at SEC schools and a Big 12 school, he can cap his career at a B1G school. He might bring the right balance academics and athletics, having been at two SEC powerhouse schools and a solid Big 12 school (at least for basketball).

Is it more of a snakepit than any other University? Yes. Rutgers is full of silos -- groups that will not cooperate with each other. It has an awkward governance structure. It has poor relations with legislators. Many of its alumni don't feel warm and fuzzy about their experience. The public in NJ is much less aware that Rutgers is the state university than people in Alabama are about UA.

Being president here is an exceptionally tough job. I agree this fellow would be a fine choice, but, at 68, does he really feel a need to round out his resume? Why not just enjoy life after a long and successful career?

I think it is.. just based on being a northeastern kind of place... dealing with unions, activism, state pols who are thinking me first with no state pride, etc. I could be wrong.. but I'd imagine the politics is worse at Rutgers. On the other hand, maybe he would think Rutgers and its access to the NYC area is just what he wants... for a time.
