I wonder if the NBA will adopt this NIL/portal model of doing business where entire rosters change each year?

"Sorry Knicks fans. I know you grew found of Jalen Brunson, but he decided to transfer to whatever team will pay him the most next season."

That's not a good comparison.
Imagine Spike Lee was giving the Knicks tens of millions a year - outside of all the revenue they already get.

"Sorry Detroit Pistons. I know the Knicks don't have the salary cap space to pay Cade Cunningham. But super fan Spike Lee has agreed to pay Brunson $50m outside of the salary cap."

"Report: Knicks unable to fire Coach Fizdale until super fan Spike Lee stepped up and funded the buyout."

"Report: Knicks want to hire Coach Thibs but don't have the money for it. Super fans Spike Lee and Adam Sandler step in to pay for Coach Thibs salary."

Look at how dumb those headlines look.

That's why the college atheltics model is and having "donors" support the industry is insane.

This is why there are rules that govern player movement in the NBA.

A game vs. Indiana next season is a must!

Well so far they've brought in four guys that averaged a combined 60+ points last year, have one freshman coming, and two seeking waivers to return. Only 3 behind us if their waivers work out.

Stupid question but why don’t NBA/NFL teams have fan funds to pay additional compensation outside of the cap? Seems like it would benefit pro teams in the same fashion.

Can we get a group discount if we take all of them?

NBA and NFL teams are a cohesive league and care about an equal playing field.
Basically the opposite of the college athletics.
Conferences, teams, fans - nearly all have minimal interest in an equal playing field.

There are rules against circumventing the salary cap in the NBA and NFL.
Such as guaranteeing Kevin Durant that Spike Lee will put him in a movie and pay him $50m if he signs with the Knicks.

However, the "unofficial" free agent pitch for the Knicks or Bulls or Warriors has always been "You'll be more famous in a major city. More advertising and business opportunities than Oklahoma City."

But the teams themselves can't be involved with setting up or influencing those deals.

Most root for the name on the front of the jersey not the name on the back.

I just don't understand it.
If every player on the Giants left before next season - my interest doesn't change at all.
I root for the Giants. Not Malik Nabers.

The irony is that it seems the posters who were most adamant "Players have no value without the team. The name on the front has the value - not the name on the back" are also the ones who keep saying "I'm not watching if the name on the back keep changing."

Seems the names on the back do actually have value.

They say name on the front means more than name on back.
I'm sure this is true for casual fans, who probably make it the vast majority of those who watch tournament games. But it's not true for hard-core fans and I don't think college sports can survive without them. It's important to TV that there be rabid fans in the seats, but it's harder to be a rabid fan of a team that turns over every year.

We'll see what the House v. NCAA settlement does to resolve the issue. If every team has the same cap and if pay-for-play deals from boosters end, then there will be less incentive to transfer. But we don't know yet exactly what the judge will approve or how well restrictions on pay-to-play will work in practice.

If we returned the entire team next year (except for Ace and Dylan) - Derkack, JWill and Lathan don’t transfer - we would have rabid fans at the RAC next season?

Alternatively, the fan base seemed pretty fired up to start this past season for a team that only returned 3 players.

I think “winning team” is the key part missing from your “rabid fanbase” equation.

I think if we suddenly got $15m and could bring in 5 elite transfers, the fanbase would find a way to be quite rabid next year.

How bout we trade our roster for their roster?

True in a sense. But enthusiasm is waning because of the names on the back. Results aside, rooting for a new group of faces every year is a deterrent when trying to root for the name on the front. Loyal, passionate, diehard will tire/are tiring of this quickly.

Maybe you're right. But if a school had a winning team, would the fans be as enthusiastic if the team's composition entirely turned over every year? Hard to know.

I agree I would be excited.

However, the system that we have now, which basically turns over players every year, sucks tremendous ***

Let me go off on a tangent.

When I was a kid, my mother took my sister and me to Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan to see That Touch of Mink, a 1962 romantic comedy with Doris Day and Cary Grant. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris make cameo appearances in the film. (This is immediately after their pursuit of Babe Ruth's sngle season home run record in 1961 when they were both hot properties. BTW, they were in uniform and swinging their bats -- not exactly hard work for them.) Presumably Mantle and Maris got paid for this and presumably the payment was in proportion to the value of having them appear -- otherwise it would not have been commercially rational to pay them to make the appearance.

Now let's suppose that Spike Lee says to a free agent, "If you sign with the Knicks, I will pay you to make a cameo appearance in my next film." Under the House settlement, the question would be whether this is "pay-for-play" or a valid business transaction. Deloitte would try to determine whether the commercial value of the appearance was reasonably proportional to the amount being paid, or whether it's a disguised subsidy to the player. Assuming the judge gives final approval to the settlement, we'll get to find out how workable it is to make that determination.

End of tangent.

Here’s the problem.

I don’t care who your coach is now. If you’re in the bottom 10% of NIL resources like Rutgers you are never going to be competitive in a major basketball conference. Never ever.

Absolutely.
Duke started 3 freshman.
Their fans seemed pretty enthusiastic.

Did you see the chart of college of where all the Elite 8 teams starters were from?
Ask their fans of the season wasn't fun.

I've listed it before.
Here is the chart of fan enthusiasm:
1a. Win with "known" players
1b. Win with mercenaries
3. Lose with "known" players
4. Lose with mercenaries

I can only imagine the volume of lawsuits that will spawn from rejections by Deloitte whenever this goes into effect.

Starting freshmen is not the same as playing mercenaries. Duke fans can imagine the freshmen will stay with them. Players who have transferred -- not so much.

That will initially be true. But as in many fields, court decisions are likely to result in rules of law (e.g, this is the right way to establish proportionality) that help give certainty and lessen future litigation. Challenges will become much less frequent once the courts have established the ground rules through deciding cases. Of course, that may take a while!

They can? They certainly didn't imagine Flagg was staying.
1 already declared and the other 2 are likely to also declare.

This make more sense if we literally didn't just have the most anticipated Rutgers season in decades (perhaps ever?)

Fueled with mercenaries and 2 freshman nobody expected to stay beyond a year.
In fact, the only hesitation was that we didn't get more mercenaries (a defensive center). Most were mad we were going with a returning player (Obgole) and a freshman (Lathan).

But they lost.
So people say the system sucks.

Yes, they knew Flagg was one-and-done. But by your own statement, the other two haven't declared yet. Optimistic fans could have reasonably thought, 'hey, if we do well, maybe the other two will stay." In our case, yes, we knew Bailey and Harper were one-and-done, but not the others. And, yes, fans would have liked another transfer. But there comes a point where turnover is so rapid that fans stop identifying with the players. The fans will have to care only about the team name. I don't think most dedicated fans -- the ones who fill arenas -- are likely to do that. I don't even think fans of pro teams would do that. It wouldn't be the same for Knicks fans if all or most of the team's best players (who are the ones most likely to be sought by other teams) were different every year.
