Meds thing is crazy. Was at Coachella for a bit this past weekend and saw Green Day. The shorty of a lead singer dedicated a song to all of the people on medication and the entire crowd went crazy. Truly bizarre times.

You can all but guarantee this guy was on some sort of anti depressants or something of the like.
This post is exactly why he and others proudly speak of seeking mental health which include psych medication. Should those suffering from mental health issues just suffer in silence? Should we keep the negative stigma around people mental health? So what if he is on anti depressants? Would it be better if he just continued to struggle with it until he snaps and either kills himself or perhaps goes on a mass shooting spree? Why is taking care of one's mental health such a bad thing to you?

Because way more people are given these drugs than actually need them

Because don't just wake up and say. Hey, I'm going to kill people today. Signs are missed or ignored. I'm sure we will hear about issues sooner than later.
Could it be the MSNBC, Colbert and Kimmel's of TV Land have helped bring this on? Every day and night Trump, Trump Trump is a
angry bad man GIF

One that makes a gun owner responsible for proper storage of said gun. Why was he able to access the weapon? I work for law enforcement and in our building any weapon that is in the building must either be secured on the officers person or locked in the armory. The question I have was why was the gun not properly secured? Why was he able to access it? Yes no law is going to stop every incident but a law that requires one to be responsible for their weapon perhaps would make people think perhaps instead of keeping the weapon in a night stand drawer they would instead secure it.
The mother’s negligence (who is in law enforcement) is what caused this. Not the lack of a law

No there are laws. She has a step son with mental issues. The guns are required to be locked while in the house.
I never said that there weren’t any laws did I?
Didn’t I also say they the mother was negligent?
But again a law doesn’t prevent one’s irresponsibly does it?

There was a call for a new gun law to prevent this tragedy and my point is that no new law would have prevented this from happening
In order for a law to be followed one has to show responsibility for ones actions…that clearly did not happen in this case and again the mother should be held accountable for her actions

I get it and don’t totally disagree. My bother is a gun guy. Has two adult children. Both avid hunters, one is in the army, Neither know the combo to his gun safe.
But I’m sure we will find out some existing law was broken in this case
This is the correct answer. Laws are not going to help all that much. But, in a home, any home, all guns need to be locked up and even then, they should also have trigger locks as well. The gun itself should be an extension of the registered owner.
Unless it is shown that someone broke into the gun cabinet and found a way to open the trigger lock, the own needs to be accountable. If anyone can just grab your gun at home and use it, it is as much your fault as theirs.

I used to have guns as I was a big hunter. Shotgun, riffle, 357 - and where I grew up and it being quite a while ago- shotgun/riffle in the back window of the pickup truck was very common. We used to see it in our HS parking lots all the time.
My Dad hated guns of any sort. WW2 vet. So, the only way I was allowed to have them at home was to have them locked up and trigger locks on them. So, I learned very early.

Now, with that said- the only laws that need to be tougher is on obtaining guns in the first place. And then, the laws for gun related crimes have to be very strict.

Actually yeah, if guns were well regulated as called for in the 2A, cops wouldn't need to be armed to the teeth and have weapons their crazy kids could take.

Or I'm sorry, is it that Western Europe, Canada, Australia and others just cured mental health, banned video games, banned pills, etc....whatever the excuse du jour is?

In Japan for example if you want a gun, someone comes to your home and inspects how you store it. That would have prevented this.

"Well regulated militia" didn't mean gun control. A militia then was just the general population of men able to use arms. "Militia" didn't mean professional army. "Regulated" meant able to function. If there were no duns available then obviously the militia wouldn't have ben well regulated.

Back in the day calling someone "ambitious" was an insult because it meant they would do anything to get ahead (think "ambi" as in "ambidextrous" - left or right as equal etc)

Words change meanings and calling something "sick" today can be praise

The states with lowest registered gun ownership rates, in order: NJ, MA, RI, HI, NY, CT

The states with lowest gun homicide rates, in order: RI, MA, HI, NJ, NY, CT

Unfortunately there has been an intentional effort to deny reporting crime stats in places with a lot of crime

Patterson for example:

"In New Jersey, the law enforcement agency with the largest jurisdiction that did not report 12 months of crime data to the FBI is the Paterson Police, which did not report any data in 2022. According to the FBI, 145,000 people live under its jurisdiction, which represent 2% of people living in the state."

I imagine NJ stats get a boost not reporting Paterson.
NY as a state only had 24% of agencies reporting

So much lying goes on its hard to trust stats anymore

NYPD’s failure to submit crime data to feds could cost NYC millions

The FBI is fully aware that some districts don’t report and isn’t so stupid to not use statistical tools to fill in the blanks. Or do you think they just shrug and say “I guess there was no crime in all the places that didn’t report.”

109 people were shot (19 dead) in Chicago last July 9.
Its not a gun law issue because strong ones get violated all the time by criminals who feel cool .
Gov policies broke families beginning in the 60s and rise in crime went up.
Then the violence and criminality were excused for the perps ("there there its not your fault").
Causes and blame were transferred to others (political motives).

Then a whole entertainment culture loves the gangster vibe and promotes it.
Then kids cant get close to reading and math levels
Then political flames are fanned routinely for selfish reasons
1 in 7 people are on meds.
Society has been made crazy on purpose.
People weren't running around shooting each other during depression

Major cities tend to have the most publicized gun deaths but the proof in the pudding is how the state ranks overall .
Some states with strong gun laws are higher then the national average, but he ones that seem to have the most gun related deaths are the ones that have less restrictions for gun owner and those purchasing guns .
Here's a chart , but 2022 statics because that's the latest I could find and I doubt the percentages changed in the 3 years since this was released.
We can argue about how to stop it but thoughts and prayers have proven ineffective before and after this article was published .

As for firearms being used by other than the owner , maybe making gun owner insure their weapons and being held liable for anyone using that weapon in a crime unless they notified the police it was stolen , in which insurance would kick in, and be charged with a crime if it was not secured properly , like being an accessory, would make gun owners act more responsibly with their guns. Even though gun ownership is a protected right for most Americans, it's still a luxury and not
deemed mandatory to survive . Self defence is one of a gun's main purpose, but that is something every American decides if gun ownership fits the way they want to live .
One exception for mandatory insurance for guns owned would be law enforcement personnel, service weapons would be exempt, only personal weapons not connected to the job would have to be insured .
Whether you agree or disagree with my opinion , I hope we can agree something needs to be done and for all the talk about existing gun laws needing to be enforced , many of those laws are being weakened in the name of protecting yourself and loved ones from being shot

What he posted is factual. You wont address it and the msm won't talk about it so therefore you don't get your talking points. It happens everyday and is ignored by 98% of the msm.

Inner city violence should be discussed - it’s terrible problem. The topic just doesn’t belong here as an attempt to divert attention from mass shootings.

100% disagree. It has to do with guns right? A bunch of mass shootings are done in inner cities but don’t get reported or covered because it does not fit the msm’s agenda

Why don’t people in this country take the large view? The fact that there is by all accounts in excess of 300 million guns in the US? Why are people so fearful? What do they think will be solved by owning firearms? Are we that paranoid about people around us? Are we trying to prove some stupid point? I grew up in the 1970s , there were many problems and there was crime and violence. Don’t listen to those who romanticize the past. However, we did not have the type of random gun violence that we have today. I feel terribly for my 2 sons who are in their late 20’s and have grown up with this BS. Can someone please explain the adolescent and in my opinion cowardly fascination with guns and violence?

Attemptto in two phrases, two words each.
1. Social media
2. Divisive politics.

Two more words:
Poor parenting.

The father and step mother have a lot of explaining . Family is a mess and the kid sounded like a pawn in a bad game of chess.

Why is there devisive politics about random gun violence? It seems there should be mutual agreement about a common sense approach about guns and mental health support. The thing that I see is fear and adhearance to a gun ideology that is irrational. The fact that no Federal gun legislation addressing semi automatic/ military weapons limitations after many grade school pupils were murdered in Conn and then in Texas is beyond belief. I don’t understand why any parent could not put themselves in the position of those parents.

The step mom looks like she kept anyone else from getting ahold of her donuts. She should have secured her weapons the same.

The divisive politics I referred to, in tandem with social media, is the waeponization of politics to pit people against each other. This young man obviously had issues with race based on statements he made in student group meetings. Sounded like a hate-filled young man indoctrinated with wacked out talking points. The indoctrination door swings right and left. Top that off with parents who won't seem to win any parent of the year awards and a history of being on and off antidepressants, and thats quite an incendiary mix.

And no, I am not against anti depressants, but I am not for them either. They can help in some instances but hurrt in others.

Anecdotally, a.college kid dom my circle of friends committed suicide after suffering from depression for many years. His parents refused to let him go to a therapist or psychiatrist. Kid was a high achieving student in a prestigious college on track to go to med school. Wonder how the parents feel about antidepressants now.

They can't because there isn't a way to stop this insanity.
Are you honestly saying there is no possible way to stop this? You are able to look at all the other countries of the world where this doesnt happen with a fraction of the frequency, and with a straight face, say there's no way to fix this issue?
This reminds me of one of my favorite Simpsons quotes. Millhouse's beatnik parents: We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas, maaaan.

Yeah, and they also didn't have the weapons then that were used in this shooting for example, so that cuts both ways, even though many if not most scholars would not agree with your definitions in any case.

Chicago doesn't even rank in the top 20 most dangerous cities in the US.

You don't want to talk about the states with the most gun violence- nearly all in the Deep South- for obvious reasons.

But happy to talk about that too.

That damn msm- wanting to stop mass shootings in literally the ONLY country where they happen.

The kid’s biological mom really rips the dad and stepmom apart. Going back to a lawsuit against them.

The birth mom took him Norway, where she was from, and the loser parents in Florida insisted he stay with them.

Imagine he had grown up in Norway- people probably would not have lost their lives. He'd have struggled to access firearms, he'd have gotten help and if he didn't he'd have gone to a jail that would focus on rehabing him to return to society.

Hopefully these parents are criminally tried like the ones in Michigan w/ Oxford.

It's insane- there were several kids in MI that survived Oxford and MSU- and here Parkland and FSU. What a country.

This statistic is incorrect. The figure you cited includes suicides. Suicides are not considered homicides.

The states with the lowest gun homicide rates are Hawaii (1.5 per 100,000 residents), Utah (1.8), Nebraska (1.8), Idaho (1.8) and Massachusetts (1.8). These states all have lower gun homicides rates than Austria, Switzerland, Finland, France, and Canada.
