Edward G. Robinson in the role always makes me laugh. Can’t see him as anything but a gangster.

Interesting that they chose this Saturday and not Easter Eve which is next Saturday.
Last year it was on Easter Eve I believe and the year before it wasn’t. I heard it had to do with NBA playoffs being aired on ABC, not 100% sure though.

TV dictates things and Easter is absurdly late this year so that definitely makes a lot of sense.

I do get a kick out of reading this thread last year and this year. First off sitting here with me 30 year old daughter and she keeps saying " I don't get it, this movie is so bad" I gave up trying to explain to her why this movie was a big deal to us "old timers".

Second, the posts trying relate the movie to Easter. This is about the Jews and Passover.

And last but not least, as a Greek Orthodox, every year I have to explain why our Easter is different date. I always answer when Catholic Easter is before Passover, how can that be . The Jewish calendar is way older then the Gregorian calendar. Palm Sunday was when Jesus came in Jerusalem for Passover so Passover is tonight and Palm Sunday is tomorrow a week later Easter. So Greek Easter is week after Passover when Catholic Easter is sometimes before Passover and sometimes weeks after.

But this year Orthodox Easter and Catholic Easter fall on the same day, right?

The later the better IMO.

Second or third Sunday in April is perfect. Easter in March is dumb. 👎

Watching again, I am even more convinced Yul Brynner made that kitcsh work.
Heston was great, but push to shove, there were probably others who could have handled the role ok.
Who could have replaced Brynner?
Built like an acrobat who turned MMA - with a gaze of steel and an accent that only a king or pharaoh could have - you couldn't even tell what his ethnic scorecard was. Its no wonder he won all the awards for King of Siam.
Where Edward G is calling young girls his "little mud flower" you have Brynner declaring "so let it be written, so let it be done" to make up for the campy nonsense

It was absurdly long because of the crazy commercials, and they even edited some stuff out! I made it to the parting of the Red Sea, and then I was out like a light.

Never saw the correlation between Moses and Easter. Two totally separate events. Maybe I shouldn't have listened to the nuns in grammar school but they were mean so we had to listen, if not, out came the wooden ruler 🤣
Loved the nuns. Tough love for sure.

He would be better as the older pharaoh I think.
He had the personality but looks wise he could pass for a souvlaki cook with a street cart.
I couldn't picture Brynner at a street cart.

The thing about TC was that it wasn't Pharaoh vs Moses - it was Pharaoh vs God.
At the end Pharaoh admits defeat by saying "His god is god,"
In that case I like the majestic looking Brynner - I don't want God beating-up a souvlaki chef lol

Brynner from 1940s and Telly from 1957 (TC was 1956)

My mother took me to see this at a REAL movie house in 1956.
Haven't watched it again to this day.
My guess is that you were *very* impressed. This movie was made to be a wide-screen spectacular -- even the largest TV screen can't do it justice. No wonder you haven't watched it since.

TC was a staple on TV either Palm Sunday night or Easter Sunday night during the 1970s.

TC was in VistaVision and had color by Technicolor - its very lush.
The TC films lasted in vaults much better than the older films
Seeing fil in a theater is better than at home but it still looks good on HDTV

Do the Greek Orthodox acknowledge 1 Corinthians or Hebrews?

1 Corinthians 5-7

Hebrews 3:1-6

Both passages offer some light on the connections between Moses, Passover (depicted in the film) and Jesus Christ.

Thanks.

JC never stopped seeing himself as Jewish “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. "

If you want a real trip read Isiah 53 - pretty much completely describes "Easter" events

Brynner had the eyes of the sphinx. Perfect choice.

Do they use ads in films? A good and safe program for YT downloads is 4K Downloader. You can get the vids without the ads. You can also save music vids as MP3s. There is free version but the cheap pay version is worth it

I flip the question around on the non-Orthodox asking why their Easter is early every year … and then compliment the pope the years they get it right….

I thought maybe some of you would enjoy Judy Garland and Fred Astaire singing "Easter Parade." I remember my classmates and I singing this in the weekly Friday assembly in elementary school in Queens in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

yea that’s why . Doesn’t have to do with Passover
Not exactly.

Jesus instituted the “New Passover” at the Last Supper which was at the Passover meal he shared with his Apostles 2000 years ago. Unblemished lambs were sacrificed by Jews during Passover at that time; Jesus, the unblemished Lamb of God, too was sacrificed during Passover (ie Good Friday).

Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist at the Last Supper with unleavened bread and wine. The Eucharist is the “New Mana” whereas the Jews received the original mana due to the intercession of Moses while journeying in the Wilderness.

In short, Passover is absolutely central to Catholic/Christian Theology. Catholics believe that the Messiah will usher in a New Exodus, but to Heaven rather than Jerusalem as in the Original Exodus. In order to have a New Exodus, a New Passover is required just as the Original Exodus was preceded by the Original Passover. Moses was obviously at the center of both the Passover and the Exodus.

Jesus is often described as the New Moses by Christian theologians, among many other names. I believe that it is completely appropriate that the movie Moses be aired during the Easter Season.

Agree 110%. Brynner was just perfect for the role. Loved all those old biblical films as a kid growing up. Still think Heston's best performance was in Planet of the Apes.
