Anybody know why Goodie wasn't cornering any of the blood round matches? I only saw Pollard and Mytych.

Of the 3, I would rather have Labriola in the corner
Yeah. Labs wasn't there either. I understand that Mytych and Pollard handle the lighter weights and Labs and Goodie handle the heavier weights. But, you are the head coach with 3 guys in the blood round and you are not there cornering for them? WTF?

This is dumb, guys. Many head coaches at top programs aren't in the corner. As long as we're complaining about stupid 💩, burn these ugly 2 tone tank/shorts singlets, and go back to the 2019 versions.

I agree on the ugly singlets, but aren't you a little curious why Goodie wasn't cornering those matches? I'm not complaining or blaming our disappointing tournament on this, just making an observation.

There was a thread on twitter last week complaining about lack of head coach in the corner and it was pointed out that Cael only cornered half PSU finals last year …I don’t think it’s as big a deal you are making it out to be

You don’t need the head coach in the corner when your staff is loaded with all Americans, national champions and world level wrestlers

At this level if you listen to a word the coach says, you’re too late. The only impactful thing coaches really do in the corner is strategy related to score and clock that is hard for the wrestlers to process while also wrestling.

It’s not false. All the technical stuff they’re shouting is generally ignored. By the time the coach recognizes what needs to be done, says it, the wrestler processes what the coach said, and then puts it into practice, it’s already 2 seconds too late. And that’s if the wrestler even hears them.

Coaches definitely help out on the mental side of things… managing the score and clock and keeping the guy motivated, etc.

got it. So coaches shout instruction, particularly in scramble situations, when head hip and hand placement are often critics, just for fun.

So all these coaches shouting the instructions not only in the ncaa but olympics for all sports are wasting their breath? Okay, whatever.

Pretty much. There’s very little technical impact they make on match day. Again, by the time a wrestler processes the instruction that the coach gives, who first needed to process what the wrestler has to do, it’s too late. It’s a feel sport, and the decision the wrestler has to make to succeed at this level happen in fractions of a second and those decisions are made after years and years of practice.

Then you dont watch and know nothing about wrestling bc I watched 25 matches where guys were in situations and the wrestlers were literally looking at their corner for instruction. Many in oddball scramble situations or trying to finish off a turn or move and looking for positioning advice but OK, whatever you think. Lol.

It is a mix of both worlds, but the coaches absolutely have valuable input during the match like you said. It's evident they are interactive and wrestlers do pay attention to them.

He won't quit. This discussion started with someone questioning why Goodale wasn't in the corner. It was a good question and whether or not he thought he was needed, it would have been a sign of support. However, NJSC is obligated to explain why it isn't an issue at all. If that were true, why does Goodale get up and shout instructions during the matches when he's there?

I definitely think coaching matters during matches. I also think it is perfectly normal to have assistants in corner rather than head coach. Assistants can and often do make the best matside coaches.

There is a lot to question with the program but this doesn't seem like a real issue. Goodale is a leader and an administrator. Delegating to his assistants and knowing when to allow them to guide the athletes is par for the course I think.

If the assistants are capable and the HC has confidence in their abilities to coach, I don't see any reason why it's a big deal if the HC is not in the corner. Goodale wasn't in the corner for Shawver's B1G championship match last year and that seemed to work out OK.

Ridge Lovett said following his match last night that he was listening to Manning for the last :30 or so. Manning was telling him time info, doing the danger count with the ref and when to scramble and when to stayed tied up.

Yes, as I’ve said coaches in the corner play a critical part in relaying the situation regarding time and score. But again, by the time technique is relayed to the wrestlers, they’re 2 moves behind. Anyone who wrestled at a high level knows this.

I’ve wrestled at a high level and I’m telling you, you are wrong. Yes if in neutral a coach is yelling high crotch then you have a valid point. However there is plenty of situational wrestling that takes place where the angle from the corner can see thing and instruct, that the wrestler in the situation can not. Good coaching in the moment aids mat awareness and situational wrestling. Particularly in scrambles when head, hip and hand placement is critical

Thats just an idiotic take. 100% false.
Yes basic stuff like takedowns, impulsive moves like throws, headlocks, etc. but giving a guy an idea on tendencies, seeing things the wrestler might be missing, sitting in a turk and how to reposition to finish, using or not using legs based on style of guy you are wrestling, sitting on top in a scramble and coach yelling a way to reposition and 100 other things. Lots of stuff the coaches have scouted out. This take is beyond ludicrous.
