To bolster Rutgers basketball for the upcoming season under Coach Steve Pikiell, targeting mid-major players in the transfer portal who align with the team’s defensive identity and can address specific needs is essential. Based on recent performances and available information, here are some potential candidates:

1. Dedan Thomas Jr. (UNLV)

• Position: Point Guard

• Profile: Thomas has entered the transfer portal and is considered one of the top players available.

• Fit for Rutgers: An experienced point guard like Thomas can provide leadership, facilitate the offense, and enhance perimeter defense, aligning with Coach Pikiell’s emphasis on defensive tenacity.

2. Trey Townsend (Oakland University)

• Position: Forward

• Profile: The Horizon League Player of the Year, Townsend averaged 17.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

• Fit for Rutgers: Townsend’s scoring ability and rebounding prowess would add versatility to Rutgers’ frontcourt, providing both offensive and defensive contributions.

3. Elyjah Freeman (Lincoln Memorial University)

• Position: Forward

• Profile: Freeman, a 6-foot-8 forward, had an impressive freshman season averaging 19.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, with notable shooting percentages.

• Fit for Rutgers: Freeman’s size, scoring, and rebounding make him a valuable asset for enhancing Rutgers’ interior presence and overall defensive strategy.

4. Chandler Jackson (Florida State University)

• Position: Guard

• Profile: Jackson averaged 16.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2 assists per game during his tenure at FSU.

• Fit for Rutgers: Jackson’s scoring ability and experience in a competitive conference could provide a significant boost to Rutgers’ backcourt depth and offensive options.

By focusing on these players, Rutgers can strengthen its roster with individuals who not only bring experience and skill but also fit seamlessly into Coach Pikiell’s defensive-minded system.

Interesting AI response ... Thomas and Townsend would certainly be good for RU ... Freeman must be a JUCO, can't find him on sports-reference.com. Hard pass on Jackson - awful 3-point shooter, no evidence of defense, never averaged better than 6.3 ppg in any season ... so no thank you.

Of course, as the poster knows, we have no idea if RU is looking at or has a shot at any of these players - it is only AI.

Yea just a little fun with AI as I watch Derek Queen make the type of play I was hoping to see Ace or Dylan make this weekend

Apparently Kentucky is interested in The D2 player Freeman

Trey Townsend is currently playing for Arizona tonight so I think I’ve found a flaw in the ChatGPT intelligence. Lol

Ha, ha, good point - and playing in his 5th year ... I think the extra COVID years are over with, so he would not be available, eh?

I asked ChatGPT last week if Ace should have been on the all B1G team and ChatGPT didn't know the season started, yet alone finished

If the large language model you are using doesn't have access to the internet how would it "know"? It will only "know" anything up to the date its training ended. There are plenty of models out there that can access updated info however. Whether they give a "correct" answer is anybody's guess.

Edit - I just asked out of curiosity. Not bad "In conclusion.... the combination of his personal statistics and Rutgers' team performance likely justified his placement on the Third Team rather than the First Team."
