OT: Natural gas prices

Yes, natural gas prices have been really low in the US until recently. We all benefited from fracking technology greatly increasing domestic supply. Still well below what they pay in Europe or Asia. We are now a large exporter via LNG which is absorbing some of our excess supply.
There was a rate change passed in November that related to infrastructure improvements, but it was nowhere close to doubling. Closer to 16%. Anything over that is probably usage or corrections to estimated usage.
"Here are the upcoming increases for the state's four electric utilities, assuming an average use of 650 kilowatts a month:
- Atlantic City Electric customers' bills will rise by $28.02, or 17.23%, to $190.62.
- Jersey Central Power & Light bills will go up by $22.67, or 20.2%, to $134.92.
- PSE&G bills will rise by $26.87, or 17.24%, reaching $182.71.
- Rockland Electric, which services the far northern portion of the state, will see an increase of $25.48, or 18.18%, to $165.64."
Kilowatts would not be associated with gas. Separate bill item for PSE&G. I think there are a couple of things going on here.
Many people don't realize that we import LNG from overseas into Boston Harbor because the US has insufficient pipeline capacity to get domestic production there. You can't move Gulf Coast LNG to Boston via ship because of the Jones Act.
That's correct. These are the upcoming electric increases in addtion to the gas increases previously mentioned.
Those global market prices for LNG are also higher due to sanctions on Russia, and the sabotage of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany. Europe has to heat their homes somehow, and cannot get plentiful Russian gas, so they buy US gas. Great if you own the right stocks, sh*tty if you heat your home with natgas.
Well the last two months were 5-7 degrees colder than prior year. Inflation rising in 2025 to unseen levels. Hope next year will be warmer than this year.

yep. I'm about 1100 KWH with JCPL so that's about $40/month or nearly $500 for the year (after tax). Add the Gas and that's just a crazy1 year increase for those 2 utilities.
I'm a JCPL customer. The gas rate on my bill has actually decreased but the delivery rate has risen by ~37%. The charge for delivery is calculated by multiplying the therms used by the delivery rate. Last month I paid about $100 for the gas and about $300 for delivery. It's insane.
Net Zero is on its last breaths in Germany and other places in Europe.
The UN con job is collapsing and gas turbine sales are blowing-up (see Mitsubishi) .

As for PSEG NG, the service charge went from $8.62 to $10.00. I haven't noticed a huge increase in NG.
My NJ Natural Gas bill has more than doubled during the last few months to over $500/month.
5-7 Degrees colder increase translates to about a 10% increase in natural gas usage.
So why is the monthly bill doubled?
With that huge increase I would guess that you are using a lot more gas than you think. If you have a gas water heater, the elements might be clogged up and it's using more gas to heat up the water. Or maybe someone is setting the thermostat higher. The easy way to see what changed is to compare your energy statements to each other. Can go a step further and make a spreadsheet that has a row for each month to see all the months at a glance.
The delivery aspect is a total con job designed to pump up their profits every year.
Hydro Quebec provides electricity to all of New England and nyc, hydro Ontario provides electricity to the Midwest such as Chicago Minneapolis, St. Louis. Anticipate when the tariffs are put in place the electricity in these areas will increase. It was my understanding this was discussed in Canada to completely turn these off but hospitals need power so they are not shutting them down totally.
Seaside Heights owns It's own Power Utility and is raising rates from 18 to 21 cents KWH. They are sourced from the PJM regional grid, and at the last capacity auction rates went from 2.6B to 14B.

Gas price has not gone up that much but the delivery charge has gone up quite a bit.
We have a 2000 sq ft. Bi Level. The first thing i did when i moved in 37 years ago was add insulation in the Attic by myself at night after coming home from work.
We replaced every window most with Andersens. My friends and i did most of these.
We have setback thermostat for 15 years . The new Nest one senses when we are not home and lowers the heat or AC to lower levels.
Winter heat is at 70' during the day and 58' at night. Summer AC is at 76'
All lights have been changed over to LED.
We have 5 ceiling fans in the house.
We have an attic fan .
We replace our water heater every 12 years even if its still working. We had one burst once. I wont let that happen again.
We replaced our heating system in 2009 with a 95 % efficient Lennox system. We used many rebates and incentives that were available at the time that saved us thousands. Thanks Obama!
We installed last year a high efficiency natural gas fireplace that is sealed from the living space that heats downstairs. We replaced a drafty wood burning fireplace that was only 30 % efficient. This had actually lowered our gas usage. A lot of heat was going up the chimney and sucked warm air out of every upstairs room.
Our recent JCPL Gas bill was $220 last month highest I think its ever been. Electric is never above $180 even in the hottest months.
I get a report card every month from NJNG that shows efficient homes in my area use 153 Therms. My home used 119.
I would put solar on the roof but we wont be here long enough to get an ROI, also our roof is about 20 years old.
All in all we are feeling pretty good about our bills in comparison to what i have heard from others.
Some of these fixes are easy to do some are expensive, but we have saved thousands every year and will get us a better price when we sell .

I just got home from an extended trip to the South for the winter. I'm in total shock. Somehow my usage doubled from last year while away and my rates went up 39%>> insanity.
All of that is really great and we have done the same things. 2000 sf home and our combined gas and electricity bills were $59 Elizabethtown gas and $175 jcpl.. $260 budget billing. Jumped to $350. What exactly explains that?

Mines 74-75.. it's the humidity.. not the temp. 75 and a fan in whatever room where in works great!
I didn't think a high efficiency unit would last 16 years. Has anything ever gone wrong with it?
Once $300 part was replaced and we never do the maintenance or service contract which is BS program to bring in revenue.
Well in a Bi-level home lower level is 8' cooler than upstairs so ceilings fans make upstairs feel cooler by about 4' So upstairs is really 72'.
The high efficiency Gas fireplace raises the downstairs from 62' to 70' in 20 minutes . Really been a game changer especially for my wife she can use the remote to turn on the fireplace vs. building a wood fire.
Heat kicks back up to 70 at 6 am. Down comforter is very cozy at night

If the temperature outside isn't going to go below 33 degrees I've let my house get chilly, it really does save on the gas bill. I have a long super warm robe I put on if I feel chilly.
