I have "maps" on my iphone. When I put in a route, I will hear "starting route.' I then do not get any voice instructions although the phone shows the route and the turns. When I check settings, "spoken directions" is on "louder volume." This occasionally happens on my wife's phone as well. Any ideas? Thanks!

-- the bad being that it will give you a very complex route for the sake of saving a minute.

Waze is not the only one guilty of that. It annoys me to no end that many mapping programs will send you over a complex route just to save you a hairsbreadth in time and/or distance. Just a few weeks ago, heading to a friend's house for only the 2nd time in probably 8-10 years, Google Maps was suggesting 4 turns through various side roads to get from one main road to another instead of just taking the first main road until it ended on the second one. And that saved .3 miles in distance traveled. Really?

No, but sometimes folks up north like yourself have better ideas how to get somewhere than the GPS does.
Glad to hear. I’ll keep my eye out for that thread. I actually enjoy that yearly thread. But hate it when someone shares secret back roads.
