I thought this hire would be met with more negativity. Instead it's indifference. That may be worse.
I mean it's not an exciting hire. But he's obviously competent and able to do the job.

I think the people that are happy with his return, like myself, don't feel the urgency to post.
He is a guy that can go work the second he walks through the door. He knows the system and obviously has a great relationship with Schiano.

I'm actually okay with this hire, let's see how it goes. I think we will see GS a little more involved with the defense this season.
Both coordinators, Capt Kirk and Rob Smith, have been fired before by Schiano. What gives? Relationship has changed? Schiano can't find anyone else of quality? Are they better coaches now than in the past?
That’s my observation. Smith was fired by Schiano, as was discussed on this board at the time, he wasn’t able to deliver on Schianos vision. What’s changed in the last 4 years?
But as Bus said earlier he can hit the ground running. Being we are 2 months delayed in the hiring process.
Smith is better than Fraser on the retread scale after all.

While the defensive hires may not be inspiring, at least Smith has major experience. In the end as they say, it tends to be more about the Jimmy and Joe’s than the X’s and O’s. Let’s hope the Jimmy and Joe’s are a little better next season.
Not an exciting hire at all, but situationally it might actually be the smartest hire we could’ve made. We’re on a roll with recruiting and the kids Schiano has landed have bought into the program and culture. We brought back a guy with a history of being a part of that and someone Greg works well with. In the defensive end, Greg knows his stuff so we want him involved. I’m good with this.
Meh - if you look back, it wasn’t exactly like that. He had the Duke DC job lined up at the time it was announced that RU wasn’t retaining him. They probably offered more money that we were willing to commit to for the position at that point.
In terms of his performance, it’s hard to take anything away from the 2020 Covid year. In 2021, the D was pretty solid (would be inaccurate to say he “failed”). We were outmatched in OSU and Wisconsin games - laid an egg vs Maryland, but pretty solid vs everyone else (Wake Forest game played after the team disbanded doesn’t count). Again - that was his only real season in 2.0.
Reading between the lines - we probably wanted Sparber as the linebackers coach. Sparber and Smith have the relationship from Duke and this arrangement was constructed. It allows Greg to roll the dice with an up and comer while retaining steady stability at the same time in bringing Rob back. I’m not why anyone should be upset.

Like I said on the previous hiring thread, this seems like a plan Z situation. Can’t say I understand how we got to this point or what kind of results to expect but hope Schiano can make it work for a season.

Unless he thinks sparber is the next great coach and Smith only here to mentor him due to his inexperience expect to give up major points. Getting the lb coach is great as lb play suffered last year despite the injuries. Too many mistakes and room for improvement. But two months to hire a re re tread could not be plan a, b, c, d etc. Hope the 1.9 million offensive coordinator scores 40 a game.
Why is it it plan Z exactly? He wasn’t bad at Rutgers in his 2.0 stint. He goes on to have a stand out lone year at Duke as DC improving their D from giving up 40 ppg down to 22 ppg under his watch. He stepped down for family reasons.
Huh? The first time Smith was here as DC his D ranked 4th in the country under Flood. He left to coach in the NFL with Schiano. The second time he was here he was here for 2 years coaching in a complete rebuild that started in the Covid year. The D was significantly improved in 2021, just not enough at the time for Greg to decide to pay what was needed to keep him here. So he left for Duke where he vastly improved Duke’s D as DC for one year before stepping down for personal family reasons.
The narrative that we brought him here twice and he failed both times (was a complete bust) is grossly inaccurate. Agreed this isn’t a flashy hire - but that’s very different from what your saying.

Wake Forrest was a short, backfield delay to put a hitch in pass defenders gitty-up.
QB/RB didn't run to the LOS holding the ball (I saw WF at Army and a lot on TV)
RU guys run holding the ball together.
I think its pointless distraction and I think Sam Brown got hurt because of it.
He was frozen in the Mesh as defenders closed-in on him.
If my memory serves be correctly, Sam had picked up some yards downfield before he was tackled.
I remember him being down field a bit before the contact injury happened and not in the backfield.
Game log shows Brown was injured on a six yard carry. I don't think we can blame that on the mesh read.
Miami is pursuing Orphey to be their DB Coach, though other coaches are also in consideration.
The more I think about it, the more I like this hire. I hadn’t really followed Smith once he left. It sounds like he did a great job in his one season at Duke after he left us and then chose to take some time off to spend with his family. Why are some folks referring to him as a “dud”? Throughout his career,his first year track record as DC has been excellent everywhere he’s gone except the Covid year. And we have a great pipeline lined up. What gives?
I somewhat agree. Not a bad hire, outside of the non renewal of contract last go around. Not delivering on Schianos defensive vision.
My issue once again relates to the timing. If Smith was always the guy why did it take 2 months and why is he saddled with a co in his title.
Reading between the lines, it seems possible (if not likely) it would’ve taken some convincing to get Smith back here. Probably a good deal of negotiation and coordination with the DB opening and getting the co-coordinator from JM on staff.
Following Smith’s season at Duke in 2022, would it not stand to reason that he would’ve been pretty marketable in the DC space? He chose to step down and spend time with his family, but by all counts he worked a borderline miracle at Duke, no? He took a dreadful 3-9 team in 2021 and turned their defense around under his watch as DC which led to a 9-4 season in 2022. What am I missing here?
Listen to the site podcast Richie put out an hour ago. I did since the post earlier. He wasn’t retained at Duke either. Was given an escape and took it saying he was going to Minnesota to be with family. Only to take an analyst role at Penn State 2 months later.
He hasn’t been on anyone’s radar as anything but an analyst in 2-3years. There was no one to negotiate against. If you have to convince someone to take a coordinator position in the B1G and that person is an analyst, you have to question if that is the right person for the job. Doubt it was negotiating that held up the hire.

I haven’t had a chance to listen yet. Something doesn’t add up. Guy comes in at Duke and completely turns around their defense. Team goes from 3-9 to 9-4. Then gets pushed out? Does that make any sense? What am I missing here?
There was entire coaching and regime changed from 2021 to 2022. Elko was hired and brought on Smith. But Elko is a bit of a defensive genius. Was Elko calling the defense? Odd that Elko already had a replacement prior to announcing Robb Smith “choosing” to leave. What doesn’t add up is the excuse. Leaving to be with family in Minnesota only to reverse course and head to Penn State to be an analyst and staying in that role for 2+ years. Without an upgrade.
