This is why I am so glad I was not carrying at the time...even if the dude's gun didn't jam and he missed me, if I fire back - I better be sure he is facing me when I do. If he had turned and starting running again and I shoot him, I am in jail for a long F-ing time. Or, more likely, miss him and a chance it hits someone else.

For anyone that has never fired handguns- the chances of hitting a moving target, more than 5-10 ft away in a high stress situation is almost 0% if you are not trained to do so.

Funny story but my wifes second cousin was a super marksman, was in gun leagues all over NJ & he even made the US Olympic team, many, many years ago, he would routinely shoot a 300 out of 300 & was a legend in NJ, he was also the Chief of Police in Elizabeth. There was a story that his car was being robbed in town & when he approached the thief the kid opened fire on him & he returned fire, he not only missed the thief but he did not even hit the car the thief was standing next to. Several years later we were attending a funeral & I asked him if the story was true & he replied yes that it is much different having return fire then just shooting at a target. This is a guy who over a 20 year period recorded 336 perfect scores in Tournaments all over the Country, his name was Gene Mirabella & he laughed when fellow police officers recounted there experiences in shootouts with criminals, as they all said weapons training does not prepare you when the bullets start to come towards you

Absolutely not. Respectfully you missed the entire point I was making but please allow me to explain as I do think it’s important.

There has been a shift in gun culture in the last 10-15 years. I’ve been around and owned guns my whole life man, come from a family of hunters who all skeet shoot as well. 15 years ago it was weird as hell to own an AR. If you brought one to the range people would give you looks like ‘what hell are you doing with that thing’. Growing up as kids we and many other kids weren’t allowed to even go over to the 2-3 tables at gun shows that would have them (at the time, now they’re everywhere at shows). The POINT is we as a society have become so cavalier in the way we view and use guns that we’re becoming immune to devastation when it occurs.

Owning a gun for safety reasons and walking out front with your AK while your wife waves around a handgun quite literally AIMLESSLY in an attempt to intimidate are insanely different things. No one should EVER use a gun for intimidation, it should ONLY be ever used as an absolute last resort

As an aside, I remember reading about Gene Mirabella many, many years ago when the Elizabeth Daily Journal’s outstanding sports section actually reported the results of the shooting competitions. He was indeed legendary!

I don't own a firearm but I always thought that the first cartridge should be a blank, that most home intruders would run hearing it and not engaging in a firefight. But you are right, in NJ one would get in big trouble defending their life with a firearm in modern times.

In NJ even if you fired a blank and the perp died of a heart attack you'd still probably get in big trouble. NJ's laws on protecting yourself are some of the worst in the country.

We have a gang problem in this country. Celebrated and stoked in popular culture, but with no real end in sight.

Same as the truth that 700 human beings overdose and die on the streets of San Francisco last year — but we rarely ever hear about that mass casualty.

Oh I agree, I’m also a firm believer that one should not be allowed to carry, open or concealed unless under extreme circumstances like they are being stalked.

If you carry a gun just to go shopping or to the movies, you are very honestly just looking for trouble. Maybe not consciously either but realistically when have you ever heard the story or the shopping center being shot up and someone with a conceal carry was able to step in? It doesn’t happen. More times than not it winds up causing far more harm than good.

In my opinion the only time the gun should leave the house is when it’s going hunting or to the range. It’s this obsession over people feeling empowered by guns and their accessibility to friggan anyone with a pulse that causes the mass shootings and deaths we have.

Facts are Europe has proven that with gun bans the mass shootings come to an end and reality is the #1 cause of death in this country for people under 18 is firearms.. more than cancer, more than car accidents. Now that doesn’t mean I’m giving up my guns but it would be foolish to not look at the numbers and realize what a problem we have. We’ve had the 2nd amendment for 200+ years but it’s only become a problem with kids in the last 20, why? People like to blame meds and mental health, that plays a role but people have always had mental health issues, what’s changed is the cavalier attitude towards weapons and people’s fascination with the ‘Biggest and baddest’. Couple that with a society that ready to throw hands over politics at every turn and it’s a recipe for disaster

This is a very odd post. How can someone who has had guns pulled on him twice in the suburbs find it strange that people living in the suburbs would want guns for protection?

Both were very odd situations. The one I referenced already- and even that one, it wasn't a situation where having a gun for defense really would have made a difference except to put myself in danger. The other situation actually pisses me off more.
When I was 18, my best friend just finished his Coast Guard training and came home before being assigned. We went out with another friend and I was driving. Went to a local bar- I had a first drink because you got a drink with your entry fee. But we stayed there about 2-3 hours and decided to go elsewhere. I'm driving and some guy in a pickup is behind us, on my *** and high beams on. We stop at the light, he pulls up along side us and just starts screaming at us through his window. Mid winter, so he had gone through the trouble to reach across and wind down his window to do this. I had no idea what his problem was. And he was maybe 35 or so and the 3 of us were all 18.
One of my buddies did start yelling back but that was about it. Light goes green and he decides to pull out fast and cut us off. Since my buddy was just home before deploying- we didn't want trouble and decided to just pull into the shopping plaza parking lot that was there and let this guy ruin someone elses night. Next thing I know- in comes this truck into the parking lot. It was snowing so I just gun it, do a donut and went to just drive by him. He jumps out of the truck with a gun drawn. Never fired and we took off.
I went to take my buddy home and the car slide in the snow into a snowbank. As we are pushing out of it- about 5 or 6 cop cars show up lights going and split us up and pull us into separate cars and bring us to the precinct. Not once did anyone tell us what the hell was happening.
We get there and wouldn't you know it- That guy in the truck was an off duty cop.

So again- having a weapon for defense would have made no difference and more than likely would have been more trouble then it would be worth.

So- I stand by what I said- having a handgun for protection in a suburb makes no sense.

I try to explain this to people who often say- that the cop should have just shot them in the leg or should have shot the gun out of their hand.

Disagreements on other subjects aside my opinion on this has changed in the last 10 or so years on this. I understand all the reasons for, trust me I do, I’ve just unfortunately had friends I grew up with who have been shot on the street. I know others who have lost family to gun violence. It’s something that unfortunately as it has affected me personally has swayed me towards they’re better off not being carried around by the general public than being carried.

Perhaps my own personal experiences towards the negative in this instance is swaying my judgement, it’s entirely possible.

I’ve carried in the past with no issues and certainly would be the first to admit I never thought I would feel this way 10 years ago..
