If RU has a legit shot at Bassett, Forrest, and some of the other BM guys they need to go all in now. Unlike football, it only takes a few wrestlers to change a team. Hire Bill Bassett as an assistant if necessary. Open the BM floodgates. Then, you start fundraising for the Bachmann bros and FCA guys. Hire Fred Bachmann as an assistant if necessary. That’s how you win this NIL game and put RU wrestling in the top 5 nationally and compete for a national championship. These are generational talents. We will never have a shot on the football field and won’t get looks from the elite players. Wrestling is a different story.
Bassett / Bishop McCourt

I don’t think hiring him as an assistant would be the right move but giving him a role with the SKWC could be plausible
Whatever it takes. RU will never win the NIL game in football. We have a chance to not only win the NIL game in wrestling but it would put RU in the wrestling headlines for years to come. With Gibson and Magro it would give us a shot at Melvin Miller too. Same with FCA - tons of talent there. We have a much better shot with BM and FCA than we do with Delby.
Apparently we got a shot at Basset…he’s def generational and open minded.. he would draw attention and wrestlers would follow him.. hopefully his cousin M Miller…Basset checks all the boxes to be the next Spencer Lee+
Forrest seems like a long shot.. more traditional route it seems like a heavy OSU lean.. maybe Psu if he wanna get in roster battles.
You are right in that only takes a few guys to change a team.. they need to be champ/high AA lvl guys.. look at Little Rock they got like 2 guys and now jumped us in the team tourney rankings.
We still need a replacement for Donny P.
Who would Bassett like in that role?
Make it a combo platter.
Are there any realistic prospects for a new Associate Coach for next year?

RU def needs to serve up a combo platter in order to land Bassett and open the BM floodgates. It’s totally doable. Landing Bassett would be bigger than Harper and Ace combined. I don’t know how the coaching staff is paid/managed but if you hire his Dad it would take the wrestling program to a whole new level. Then hire Fred Bachmann from FCA. Bachmann and Bassett built FCA and BM from nothing. RU has great facilities, close to PA, and is BigTen, plus doesn’t have the academic rigor of the Ivies.
Ben Clymer is the he coach at FCA and has been for years. Bachmann's dad trained his kids when they were young and is a good coach but saying he built FCA isn't true.
Teemer and Parco transferred from ASU to Iowa. This begs the question why anyone in their right mind leave Scottsdale, Arizona for Iowa. I would venture that the 400k plus in NIL funds each wrestler is getting might have something to do with their decisions to transfer to Iowa.
What is a generational talent like Bo Bassett worth? Does Rutgers have the resources and support to bring Bassett to the Banks?

Clymer is a good coach but Fred Bachmann hand-picked and built that FCA roster. He did the same at the youth level for years which is why his teams finished first at just about every major event…PA Alliance, BroadAxe, MPR, and all the other legendary teams Fred put together.
Bo will basically name his price and he and Jax Forrest are probably worth it because it doesn’t take much to turn a wrestling roster from average to championship caliber. building a top football roster is like turning the Titanic and costs tens of millions. Plus plenty of football busts.
Saw an interesting video the other day about how Bo has no interest in cutting weight as a wrestler. I think that mentality is going to become widespread over the next few years.
We were using the built in different contexts. Fred definitely helped with the roster. Clymer can coach and he's done a great job
I just don't see why we have to entice wrestlers by hiring family members. If bo bassett really wants to buy into the program, he should come here unequivocally. I'm sorry, but I was raised and bred differently. We didn't have all these financial perks like NIL deals. If you're a warrior and you truly love the sport you don't need the money for adulation and affirmation. Everybody's comments about Penn State's second stringers being top 10 wrestlers. And that's the reason why we are getting 2 of them and 1 starter. Those second stringers aren't getting any money for big endorsement deals. They wrestle for the love of the sport. We don't need anymore " leaving for greener pastures" Suriano types.
Yeah that’s a bunch of BS or at least may be right now he doesn’t need to cut because he’s so good. He was always cutting for youth events not to mention plenty of times he got the Bo treatment and secretly didn’t have to weigh-in at certain events. The cuts these kids make is insane and hurts their long term development not to mention stunts their growth. Would love for kids to stop the salt baths, IVs, wet suits, etc.
You are 100% right - unfortunately we now live in an era of paid mercenaries as the purity of sports and competition has gone down the crapper. PSU and Cornell are probably the only two programs that operate under the old model. Kids want those schools for coaching and prestige.
AGree,
My son wrestled 125 for 4 years in hs....His Senior year, the coach wanted him to cut to 119.... I preceded to feed him thanksgiving so he couldnt make 119....lol.... he had a eating problem for years after hs...My son was just an average HS wrestler (he did have 15 pins as a senior, but never made it to states despite going 25-5).
obviously weight management has always been a part of wrestling but now it’s completely out of control. Go to a major event and good luck finding a bag of salt at a local store.
Listen, your son is a warrior and a beast, just stepping out on that mat. People don't realize what balls it takes to get out there. I used to hear people in my school say it's gay that you're rolled around with other guy's.But guess what when we were older i was the first one they called to when there was a tussle. If I was a top recruit like Bassett I would come to Rutgers simply based on the coaching. Goody is a more spirited and personable guy then Sanderson. That's just me. Granted Cael is one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step on the mat and arguably a tremendous coach. But he has this wrestlers are only a number mentality. Some athletes want more to that. My suggestion is to land Bassett and try to get Anthony Ashnault as an associate head coach. A big question I have. Why did anthony leave rutgers and go to princeton as a coach? I mean he really did not like that staff ...what gives?

I remember hearing about the shady dealing that Bormet was doing with Suriano to lure him in. I know he's great, but that kid I have no respect for. He was too busy putting his stamp on his reputation instead of working on his loyalty clause. His father is a raging douche, too. I had a cousin of mine who worked directly with him on construction projects. Said the guys an unbearable *******. Everybody said Suriano was quirky and hard to figure out. I thought he was a self righteous, weirdo. He always talked like a B list actor in a 3rd rate gladiator movie.
I don’t think it’s BS. He was he one in the video saying it. Maybe things change in college but his point was that he’d rather be comfortable at whatever weight rather than being strong at a lower weight. Sebastian Rivera had the same approach and was super successful
While I agree to a degree, Mr Bassett isn't your ordinary wrestling dad. Fact is, he's got several kids on his HS squad that would be AA contenders this year. The dude knows how to coach and condition his wrestlers. He would probably be a fantastic addition to RU/SKWC.
Okay.So why doesn't brands, ryan or sanderson hire his father? Why does it have to be us to cow down to him? I think it sets a bad example of favoritism for other recruits to see this. I know he's great, but recruits like this come along all the time. I agree that we should give him as much as we can offer as a university and program. But to employ a family member just to get a wrestler doesn't sit well with me. Have you ever heard the old age adage of family and business don't mix. If anybody is going to get an associated head coaching job it should be anthony ashnault. He earned his stripes with this program and then some. I also thought the same thing with buxton when they hired him. I thought that was a useless ploy. The guy did absolutely nothing for our program. We've earned our reputation as a top 20 school. if a wrestler wants to come and bring us to the next level,Im sure we will be glad to entertain them and try to match offers. To overindulge an athlete is ridiculous, though. Are we even in the running to get him? I've heard mix reviews. Listen, all we can do as a fanbase is get behind our head coach and let this kid know there is a home for him at rutgers and we will treat him like gold. I never cared about fanfare or finances as a rutgers wrestler. All I wanted to do is win for my team and do the best I could. I didn't care if buffalo wild wings was going to give me a lifetime supply of chicken...???
Because they don’t have to play those games…we aren’t Iowa or PSU. Not to mention Iowa is paying in the neighborhood of $200K per year to top recruits.
Maybe there is a little more ego in those wrestling programs? Why change what's been working? RU has an opportunity to make adjustments. I just don't think the wrestlers would see this situation as favoritism. It would be one thing if the sons sucked and were given scholarships, but Bo Basset already mopped the floor with Anthony Ashnault. These Bishop McCourt kids are already NCAA tournament ready. Not only that, but our current roster would benefit and probably respect the hell out of the new coach as he's a proven winner.
Ever meet a wrestling Dad that says their son is cutting weight LOL. Stand in the lobby of a club practice or at a tournament weigh-in and every Dad lies about what their kids walks around at. It’s seriously comical. Bo cut serious weight for years, just like Jax, the Bachmanns, and just about any other kid taking home serious titles and hardware. Now it may be true they don’t have to now that they are top of the food chain.
Exactly right…the fact that our coaches are even talking to Bo & Co. is a huge opportunity.
I get it. You weren't kidding from your previous post. It's really becoming a money game. It's a shame. It shouldn't be that way. What happened to honor and competition? I'll be honest with you if this kid is looking for the highest bidder,I really don't think we should invest in him. Throw what we can reasonably afford to do,and if that's not enough, then sayanara. But if this is all about" what you can do for me" and not about teamwork, then maybe we are better off without him. One good.
habit, we have as a program,is that we take under the radar wrestlers and turn them into all americans, ala Yara, Perotti,Shawver, Bulsak and DelVecchio. Great hs wrestlers, but certainly not blue chippers like Bassett.
I’m not talking about the dad. I’m talking about Bo saying he’s not interested in cutting weight.
As you mention it can change at the next level but right now it sounds like he wants to follow a similar path to Rivera
I recall being told by a few folks that Riveria used to cut quite a bit, thought I heard he walked around 150 when he wrestled 125. Whatever he did though it worked for him.
Bo and Jax seem to be very close. I don't really know, but wonder if the two of them want to go together. Jax does not have Rutgers on his list - has Rutgers offered Jax? I can see them both going to Okie State, with Iowa and Penn State being the next choices. Both of them at Rutgers would be amazing, or even one of them. They have both indicated that elite coaching and practice partners are important decision criteria. Ut oh.
An offer to Bassett's father is an interesting idea, if legal. However, he doesn't have college wrestling accomplishments, although he very well may know how to run a high-level program. Bill had commented that Rutgers made Bo a creative offer. Hiring his father would fit that and offering Bo a coaching position upon his completion would also be creative and probably a very wise thing to do.
Rutgers missed a big opportunity when Donny left, but could make up for it by attracting Bo at any expense. It's not likely to happen and getting he and Jax too is a pipe dream. But in the wildest of miracles, those two would likely attract other top kids; Melvin Miller being one. And of course, everything changes when the Penn State kids arrive next season. I can imagine Gibson's brother being one of them.
I try not to buy into pipe dreams, but it can be fun to speculate, although I don't think Rutgers is serious enough to go all out for the program.

Do we even need these recruits, since according to your “source” we have 2 blue chips transferring from Penn state and another from Iowa
Actually 3 from Penn State and 1 from Iowa.I really am not up to speed with this whole Jax Forrest and Bo Bassett recruiting, thing. I know everyone is hot for the two of them to commit.I personally am more interested in these other transfers.I kind of feel like these two are setting all these ground rules with coaches. I much rather have a Shawver on my team with his quiet, intense, loyal demeanor, than some hs phenom who has some itinerary...I won't cut weight, I want the best training partners, I want the best coaches, I want the best financial deal...Ahhh ********.Just friggin wrestle and shut the f'ck up.
Yeah and by the end of his career he was wrestling 141. He didn’t want to cut any more
That ain't happenin....why anyone would actually believe that pipedream is a joke
You are just mad that you ride the jocks of arguably two of the biggest choke artists in Rutgers Wrestling history.
You make up some pipedream to make yourself relevant...your credibility is zero ...your nothing but an old man with no class and a school that wants nothing to do with you despite you're supposed prowess ...
Big difference in not being an all American but still revered and welcomed at the school compared to you who was supposedly an AA yet the school wants nothing to do with you because of your disgraceful behavior......continue bashing them ...that's your MO...you never say stuff like that to someone's face ...hide behind your keyboard and your brown bag ...get back on your meds.
