A college general manager (GM) is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a sports team or organization. Their duties include:
- Team management: Overseeing players' schedules and contracts, recruiting new players, and hiring or dismissing players
- Financial management: Budgeting, financial planning, contract negotiations, and ensuring sound financial health
- Marketing and media: Managing the team's marketing and media
- Team spokesperson: Acting as the team's spokesperson to the media and fans
- Legal: Understanding any legal information regarding the team and its players and coaches
GMs often have experience in sports or were formerly athletes themselves. They also typically have educational backgrounds in business and management<
