He won’t get canned this year
O I agree, he's got enough goodwill built up and contract to survive last year and a potential disaster this year. But it'll be a slow death if this year continues to spiral, he won't be able to recruit and what transfer portal guy would want to come here?

At 5-4 and a hot psu up next, it's getting late early. Something's got to start clicking with this team and quick otherwise it's the beginning of the end for Pike.
Unfortunately, even if Rutgers has a losing season, Pike will not be fired since there is no AD and no university president to hold Pike accountable. So he will be back next year no matter what.

This team stinks right now and it doesn't bode well for our future in the league in the NIL era. Revenue sharing might help a bit, but we are never going to compete financially with the upper half teams of the league even if we hire a dynamic coach because the price tags are gonna be too high. I'll be honest, I've never been this down on the future of Rutgers basketball. I think we're screwed.

At some point can we please run high pick and roll with Ace and Dylan with shooters in the corners. Ace loves to shoot midrange and Dylan can get downhill. Granted, it’s not an elite motion offense but it’s better than hoping Dylan can make something happen or running ISO for Ace.
College basketball teams don't know how to run effective pick and rolls. That's reserved for the NBA.

and thats why my interest may be waning as NIL becomes embeded in college sports. At some point its not fun and Im in no interest in watching an arms race of paying for players to dribble a ball at a school

We play HORRIBLE half court defense….

Coaching would say our best defense is to press yet we wait until we are down 15 to run it. Did any of our coaches watch the Maryland game?

Horrible horrible coaching
do you think Pike has the cajones to force these players to play defense, I dont, they already decided they do not want to and thats that. its ace and dylans team

two tournament appearances and advancing to the second round one time in 9 years should not buy a coach the amount of goodwill Pike seems to have. this would be our 3rd straight season missing the tournament.

Think we can all agree If we don't make the tournament this year it's considered a failure?

I mean landing 5 stars doesn't matter. The programs goal is to go to the NCAA tournament and nothing else, correct? I'd rather land less highly paid guys that gel and actually get us to March basketball that actually matters rather than landing two of the best guys and not being able to build a team around them (we paid Martini? Seriously?)

Some might say "well perception wise we are good cause we landed these top guys!". If we get two of the top three recruits in the nation and don't make the tournament, it's going to be a national embarrassment.

I pray we make it. I would stay off these boards and stick to football if I truly didn't care about the basketball program. But hey, If we don't make it this year, it'll be 3 years straight without a tournament appearance, immediately following one of our most impressive teams in the history of our program being a one and done appearance in the play in tournament.

wowza...a rational hoops post from you. keep them coming.

and yes...we should all be able to agree on that.

also agree with the poster who said it was time to reset expectations. i definitely had HIGH hopes for this season but now it's time for the squad to forget any big picture stuff and just focus on getting better. right now they look lost defensively and the offense is just tough shot after tough shot.

we all will agree but i see the excuses popping up already....RUTGERS DIDNT HAVE THE MONEY BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT PONYING UP YOUR DISPOSABLE INCOME TO PAY PLAYERS TO ATTEND RUTGERS
So where is the development of guess around them? Why do we have to field an entire roster through the portal?

You're forgetting this is Rutgers. For 30 years, we had only two or three seasons in which we had a legitimate chance of dancing.

This is literally no different from anything I've been saying to this point. The only difference is that people are finally starting to look at what I'm saying and understand it's true

He just got a 4 year extension thru 2030 with guaranteed salary of $16 million. Good luck with that.
I said should. Not that he would.

Name me another place a guy can win 1 NCAA game in 9 years… compounded with not making the tournament with two top 5 projected NBA picks in year 9 and NOT be on the hot seat for year 10?

We all came to a realization last year that last year’s team lacked the ability to shoot, score, and just play offense. Similarly, today was it for me with this year’s team and a realization. They lack the ability to stay in front of their man with effort, to pick up their teammates when beaten by their man by rotating with team defense, to box out and fight for rebounds, etc.. I already saw it in games, we all have this year, but today turned a corner with me that I don’t see hope for it changing. Similar to how last year’s team lacked offensive ability, this year’s team just lacks defensive ability. We thought maybe Vegas gave hope but the defense was not very good out in Vegas either. Choose any reason why that is the case that you like, but they just don’t have it on defense just like last year’s team didn’t have it on offense.

This explains our fanbase in a nutshell. Settle for some progress bc our history has been so bad.
Time have changed..new players…new coaches. Let’s expect more out of them!!
Our fans accept mediocrity which is awful

Have higher expectations

It's not really about this assumption. It's about the fact that this is now year 3 in a row of not making the tournament. Everyone gave Pike a pass for last season based on Dylan and Ace coming in and this year is not looking good. It's the entire picture that is concerning - not just this season.
Exactly. As bad as last year was, everyone made excuses for it, gave Pike another free pass, and pointed towards this season as our big reward. Now it looks like our reward is nothing more than another kick in the nuts. The problem is Pike completely failed to build a competitive roster around Ace and Dylan, his two unicorn recruits who fell to him. Everything else is just an outcome of that failure. i think it has become clear that Pike's floor and ceiling are about the same thing.

They are the meek, beaten puppies of RU fanhood. Everything is calibrated off the horrors of years past. As long as someone isn't kicking them, they want to build them a statue and give out a lifetime contract. Never any understanding of current day reality or forward looking expectations.

1000%.

I’ll donate more money to get rid of all of them rather than our coaches

I just don't think they can play defense. Some players are lost and some players don't have the athletic ability.

Who looks like they're not trying to play defense?

Teams do a very good job in isolating the weakest defender we have on the court. It's quite impressive. I don't notice us trying to do that on offense.

Need an offense to actually make that work.

We get out coached every game

We don't seem to have any plan or awareness on offense.

Other teams seem to be aware of what to do when they get a matchup that is positive for them. The rest of their teammates seem to be sync without requiring any additional verbal communication. Simply put, it looks like they're coached and we are not.

That’s what it looks like….

That said we haven’t any problem putting up points and it’s crazy to see. It’s when we have lapses on that side of the floor where we look kit is sync

Pike. But the mindset is applicable to half of this board too.
Oh, as you may know, it troubles me that most here think Schiano walks on water.

Has done nothing to deserve the 10 year deal he has now or the raise.

Pike isn’t stealing salary.
