Perry's wife (looks like Marilyn Manson),

“Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band,” Etty Lou wrote.

“Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”

10 years ago when I started researching guitars I cam across a young girl - Kelly Rosenthal - who played really well and is now getting to be well known. She recently did an interesting series on the Strat for Guitar Center. She was never a shredder or noise maker. She likes to be chill/atmospheric. She did an amazing tribute to Tome Petty when he died but I cant see it online anymore



She used to be gorgeous with model's hair but she went butch somewhere along the way

in the 60s and 70s we argued over bands, guitarists, drummers and vocalists as vociferously as we did sports.
Don’t think that happens anymore.

Rappers - they argue and can shoot each other.
Kendrick Lamar is doing Super Bowl in Feb - when I listened to him he seemed crazy.
He's called a "genius" but they said that about Kanye or Yeezee or whatever he is today

They had a tribute concert to honor the late Robby Robertson of The Band recently in LA. This is one of my favorite musicians Warren Haynes doing a cover of “Stage Fright” by The Band. I really like the singing and he does a very nice small guitar solo at the end. His phrasing, tone and emotive playing is always so good:

Strangely enough I'm currently hooked on a great guitarist who sadly passed away back in January....Tom Verlaine.
The tune Marquee Moon from the album of the same name by his band Television is currently stuck in my head and I can't get rid of it. It's from the 70s, but holds up damn well.

Verlaine was great. Died too young, I think he was only 73. Television has been one of my favorites for years. I think I first heard them on Vin Scelsa's radio show. Got a lot of great music from him.

My buddies and I from the '80s H.S. and college era still argue about the great 60s-70s bands...it's either Zep or the Stones as #1 or #2, then it's usually The Who, Beatles, Aerosmith in some order after that.

Why is a list of the top selling rock albums (and streaming downloads in today's digital world) only worth laughing at? Queen is/was one of the greats and they reached a whole new generation after Live Aid. They aren't the greatest, in my opinion obviously as I put Zep/Stones/The Who really in a league all their own. However huge commercial success does matter when assessing the all-time great bands.

You guys were really serious about your music! Out of curiosity, the Big 4 Brit bands (Beatles, Led Zep, Stones and Who--listed alphabetically ignoring 'The' to avoid controversy here lol) weren't among your top rock groups, or these superstars are just givens?

The most popular and "biggest" guitar driven bands that are still actively recording and touring generally include metal and grunge bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, along with less popular more modern bands such as the Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains, and then even newer bands such as Greta Van Fleet, Dirty Honey, Rival Sons, Mammoth WVH, and many others.

Teenagers and those in their 20s generally seem to be more into popular music, rap or hip hop, but there is still a fairly strong contingent of guitar driven rock fans.

Very nice list. In addition to the sound of Motown, I would add the grittier R&B sounds that came out of Stax (Memphis) and Fame (Muscle Shoals , Ala.)

Question for the older rockers. Were the MC5 a big thing back in the 1960's and early 1970's, or were they just a fringe noise band?

As we know, it’s very subjective. The high profile rock bands out of the UK in that era were great and very influenced by American roots music. Being a teenager in the ‘70s, my taste in music was formed by a lot of the stuff that came out from the mid 60’s to mid 70’s, which I consider the gold standard of rock music. I had several close friends and music was very important to us. A few of us were less attracted to the more “commercial” and high profile bands and enjoyed the more roots based bands that were born out of the counterculture era. So bands like The Band, Little Feat , Grateful Dead, Allman Bros, Santana, Creedance Clearwater Revival were popular with us. We also listened to some Jazz from time to time. Also, I’m a big fan of many of the singer songwriters from that era, James Taylor, Neil Young, Jim Croce, Carol King, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell among many others.

For me personally, I became aware of MC5 later in the 70s. I was listening to different stuff back then , so I was not that familiar with them. Actually, I did not do a deep dive into their music until maybe 20 years ago. I do like their energy and attitude. A lot of aggression with them. They obviously had an impact on the emergence of the punk rock scene in the 70s.

In the early/mid '60's, Motown vs the Beach Boys was a real conundrum.

I'm a guitar guy (lousy player) but the rhythm and harmonies got me with the BB. Lost interest after Pet Sounds, however.

Not really a conundrum. Motown, Beach Boys, British Invasion and James Brown (not really Motown) meant a lot of good music.

Only a conundrum if someone asked me to pick a favorite - any pick might have varied weekly/monthly. There was definitely a lot of good music then.

I never got their appeal aside from the fact that I think they became like the first boy band as they would become known. They remind me more of the Backstreet Boys than the Beatles. Three original members were teens and they were more known for their singing harmony than their instruments.

Never could stand the Beach Boys. But then I've always been a guitar and lyrics guy and they had neither of those.
I actually once saw them sometime back I think in the mid-to-early Seventies. We went to see Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young at some stadium in New York and unfortunately the Beach Boys were on the bill and we had to sit through their crap before seeing CSNY. The Beach Boys were like a family chorus group...incredibly soft and bubble gum-ish. Lightweight.
