Rivalry Week: RU-MD-PSU...-MSU?

In the recent past, Rutgers was paired with Maryland for the season's last game, for "Rivalry Week."

This year, the "schedulers" pair us with Michigan State, while Maryland gets Penn State. Any insights into this new pairing? Will it continue?

Seems Maryland would be our natural rival. As for Penn State, they have no apparent B1G rival, although Pittsburgh is their legacy "natural" rival.

What gives?

Penn State had been paired with MSU since they joined the B1G. When Rutgers and Maryland were added, they started this sort of 4 team rotation since Penn State is a natural geographic rival of both Rutgers and Maryland.
But it's a geographic rivalry only (PSU vs RU or UMD).

We should have UMD the last week of the season since they are the only permanent team on the schedule. PSU chose no permanent rival. Let RU-UMD develop.

Is there a deliberate B1G scheduling plan to rotate games between these four schools to conclude the regular season?

I don't understand the uproar about the final game of the year and who we play. The only one that really matters is Ohio State-Michigan.
Our natural rivals are in the mirror. Princeton, Lehigh and Lafayette. We don't have a long history of Maryland games at all.

I honestly like playing Sparty last since we can't compete with PSU and I really couldn't care less about Maryland. Rutgers vs Sparty could develop into a decent rivalry since I don't like them much and I feel like they don't like us much.

IMO we have a mini rivalry with Sparty going back to the Doug Graber team beating them in East Lansing, and to Schiano’s team beating them at our place in 2004.

Also our mascots look like brothers.

I even have an idea for a trophy for the RU-MSU game: The Warrior's Sword. One side painted scarlet for RU, the other side painted green for Sparty.

Protected rivalries

Based on agreements with all 18 schools, the Big Ten has protected 12 matchups that will continue to be played on an annual basis.

It's worth noting Penn State doesn't have a protected matchup.

Interesting.... Per that article, Rutgers-Maryland is a "protected rivalry." If so, why wouldn't the matchup be scheduled as the season-ending game, falling into "Rivalry Weekend"?

When the schedules were released after expansion to 18 this was all known. It’s a protected rivalry but that just means it gets played every year not necessarily the last game.

PSU has no protected rivalry so it might rotate between these 3 teams at the end of the year.

There are other rivalries in the B10 with old trophies even and they can be played anywhere from the middle to the end of the year.

There are a number of big rivalry games played the week before Thanksgiving because they have always be played the week before Thanksgiving. UCLA-USC and Cal-Stanford come immediately to mind.

I’d like to see all of the rivalry games played that weekend with the final week with open matchups on the final week - as was done by the Big Ten in 2020.

Blue claw trophy
People that go to the Jersey shore know there are good places to crab but New Jersey isn't known for it's crabbing industry and nothing like Maryland is famous for.
It's also a fake rivalry. We have played them maybe 18/20 times. No real history for a trophy.

The Nits don't want Rutgers, Maryland or Michigan State as their rival.
The B1G tried to make a PSU-MSU rivalery and it didn't work.
Penn State feels they are too good for the three
Can't say what MSU wants, but it seems the other 3 don't want them
Rutgers and Maryland on't want each other, they want the Nits for themselves.
Bust thing for Rutgers and Maryland would be that they become main rivals and let PSU
& MSU play for the Land Grant Trophy every Thanksgiving while Maryland and Rutgers start their own trophy game instead of this 4 headed rivalry because Penn State doesn't want the other 3 as their main rival.
MSU brings nothing to the table for the Rutgers fanbase and probably Turtle fans feel the same.
So a Turtle-Knights rivalry game should be help every Thanksgiving and let the Nits stick playing the Land Grant Trophy game because the program they want is Michigan's true rival and don't want them.

Obviously your platform doesn't have spell check or natural intelligence. 🤣

None of those teams are our rivals. We don’t have a rival in the big yet.

I posted the chart on the Round Table made by the B1G and all seem to fit except for State Penn and Sparty.
There are other rivalries in the B10 with old trophies even and they can be played anywhere from the middle to the end of the year.
And while the above is true, it does seem the B1G would like it to happen…

Interesting to see where the USC/ND game ends up in a few years. Obviously not going away, but might be earlier than later.

When will we actually get a rival ? We have been in the league 11 seasons . Do we need the BIG to invite seton hall and their intramural football team?
It has to happen naturally . We were getting close to it with michighan state when Mel tucker was chopping his wood.

This will be the 134th time Wisc and Minn have played. That's the most in FBS

Indiana and Purdue play for the 126th time

OSU and Mich face off for the 120th time

Illinois and Northwestern for the 119th time

Now those are rivalries.
But they all had to start at some point.🤷‍♂️

Can we ask the league to be like Illinois and have Purdue and Northwestern as our yearly rivals?

Different time. The two teams have to be good for a number of years.

I remember many moons ago how you'd look forward to Tex-Tex A&M, USC-UCLA, and OSU-Mich. Now there's so many games on TV this weekend it's just not the same.
