Schmidt was one of the great NFL middle linebackers. Played his whole career with the Lions. The Lions won three Championships in the 50's during his days there. RIP Joe.

The former Detroit Lions coach and star middle linebacker passed on this week.
He led the Lions to 2 World Championships in the 1950's,anchoring the defense at the new position of MLB.
What I remember most about him was his colorful vocabulary.
It was during the Thanksgiving Day game versus the Raiders that Joe unloaded a string of epithets at defensive end,Ben Davidson.
The NBC sideline microphone hadn't yet been developed to a point where certain sounds can be muffled,so Schmidt could be heard clearly as he bellowed at Big Ben:
"We'll get you when come over here you f@#$%^& c@#$%^ s$%^&*".
Curt Gowdy didn't say a word for 5-10 seconds,likely in shock or just not believing what he just gone out over the air.
Keep in mind that this was 1970,not anything goes 2024.

Joe was the first Pitt player to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
