Beyond sad, he was in a few of my daughter’s classes at BC. He was a very nice person and promising talent. Leaves two two children and a wife.

"John Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were riding their bikes north on County Route 551 in Oldmans Township on Thursday at 8:19 p.m. At the same time, Sean Higgins, 43, of Woodstown, New Jersey, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee north on County Route 551, according to investigators.

Higgins tried to pass two vehicles ahead of him and entered the southbound lanes, police said. An SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes in order to safely pass the Gaudreau brothers as they rode their bikes on the right side of the road, according to investigators.

Higgins then tried to pass the SUV and struck the Gaudreau brothers, police said. Both brothers died from their injuries."

Read the story in the post and its so tragic. My prayers are with the family. One day before his sisters wedding is just to difficult to process.

It's incredibly sad... I heard this morning that he went to play in Columbus because that was where his wife had the job opportunity in her field. Prayers for his entire family.

aggressive driving seemingly has been exponentially getting worse and worse. So many people seem to be in such a rush to get to their destination and lack any type of patience.

My father lives in South Jersey and there have been a string of terrible deaths lately on the roads. We had just been talking about how dangerous driving is getting.

Terrible story.

It’s bad all over and this guy also admitted to drinking 6 beers so it was probably close to ten.

I avoid riding on local roads with traffic.
Running red lights/signs became permissible with foreign drivers without licenses on roads.
Three pedestrians were killed in 5 years, cars ran up sidewalks 2x with 8 people hit.
Riding in day is bad but riding at 8:30 PM is more risky.
Its not just the darkness - 8-9 PM is when many "happy hour" drunks are heading home

Johnny Hockey was one of the best to ever come out of the great State of NJ.

Winner of the Hobey Baker Award and one of the greats in the NHL.

What a shame.

This is hitting people hard down here in south jersey. Salem county doesn't produce a ton of big time athletes. Everyone seems to know him and his family. My wife teaches at his alma mater Gloucester Catholic. He is still a revered figure in their hallways. No one had a bad thing to say about him. He always made it a point to be involved in that community whenever his teams played in Philly/NJ.

Absolutely tragic.

Drunk or not, that driver is a complete moron. Trying to pass a car who is making room for the bicyclists is safely in ******* territory.
Agree that he was a moron but he was also drunk which is a bad combination. For what? To save a few seconds?

As an avid cyclist and bike club member (who also lost a friend on a bike just a few years ago) here in South Jersey this just hurts so bad. We see this aggressive BS way too often. I'll never understand the mentality of these people.

Again…so sad and devastating.
As an avid cyclist, is there any case to be made for cycling against traffic?

Aggressive driving has gotten out of control.
It sure has. Adding alcoholl takes it to a much higher level.

It's much more dangerous. Cars typically are not expecting bikes to be riding on their side as those arent the rules of the road. Cars and bicyclists would have have less time to react as they are moving towards each other. And cars entering the roadway from a side street (who sometimes dont even stop at a stop sign) rarely ever look right and could pull right into or in front of a cyclist.

Bikes ride with traffic, people walk against traffic. The guy was loaded and admitted he was being impatient because he assumed the car three in front of him was trying to stop him from passing three cars at once.

Not sure any of what you said is relevant to this senseless tragedy

I grew up racing motocross at Englishtown for years, so I'm not completely risk adverse. However, I have never and will never ride bicycles on main roads or ride a street motorcycle of any kind. Drivers are insane and when you ride on the street, you are literally putting your life in the hands of others.

RIP to Gaudreau and his brother. Just awful to see such things happen so often.

Hell no, that would be much more dangerous. The closing speed would be much quicker than expected for most drivers.
Especially around bends where you can’t see, a driver isn’t going to be expecting some thing coming at them and then your argument on closing speed makes it more dangerous.
