Don't know who Pete is.
Both died young, any medical reason?Seriously? Pistol Pete Maravich set college hoops scoring records in the late 60s - early 70s before a mediocre NBA career.
Nope Not a hoops fan and well before my time. Since it was not OT, thought was a former RU football player.Seriously? Pistol Pete Maravich set college hoops scoring records in the late 60s - early 70s before a mediocre NBA career.
So far no cause of death given .Both died young, any medical reason?
Good question. I know Pete died early due to a congenital heart issue, could’ve played a role in this case but I’m just speculating. Both died young, any medical reason?
Fair enough. But he was in the news this year because Caitlin Clark was about to break his NCAA scoring record. Let’s face it, there’s only so much sports info we can store in our brains before useful stuff starts to slip out.Nope Not a hoops fan and well before my time. Famous people I don't mind. But now we are going deeper down the rabbit hole of seriously obscure people. Being related to a semi famous person doesn't make you famous. Why do posters get their balls out of joint about RIP threads? They are very easy to ignore if you choose.
Eh. It evokes a discussion about Pistol Pete which is okay in my book. It’s all good.Famous people I don't mind. But now we are going deeper down the rabbit hole of seriously obscure people. Being related to a semi famous person doesn't make you famous.
My pea brain is full of useless and obscure musical knowledge. Waiting for the cowbell player in Blue Oyster Cult to pass to start the epic RIP thread.Fair enough. Seems like you have a good point, but doubt the ones you're aiming at won't shoot back .Why do posters get their balls out of joint about RIP threads? They are very easy to ignore if you choose.
Anyone who saw “Pistol Pete” play knows that it wasn’t his nickname but his play on the court that is remembered. As for his son being remembered, it is a reflection of our star driven culture. It is a reality, Obviously many people die everyday and do not get recognized, if someone is connected to a person of fame it will get mentioned. It’s denial to assume that isn’t how it plays out. Big difference between what is and what should be.I think Pistol Pete was one of those guys that benefitted from a memorable name.
If he was "Point-Poppin Pete" or "Playmaker Pete" he would be long forgotten.
I was wondering if people would post (first) about the anonymous dead son or the current KC Chief who had a heart attack in a team meeting . No surprise its the dead anon.
Pete was a seriously good college hoops player. Entertaining as well. Like Calvin Murphy, worth seeing him play in-person even if his team wasn’t championship caliber.I think Pistol Pete was one of those guys that benefitted from a memorable name.

This is a sports board, not an obituary column. And the fact that it wasn't about a famous person but instead his son makes it even dumber yet.Why do posters get their balls out of joint about RIP threads? They are very easy to ignore if you choose.
Gotta assume he was tested due to his father. A simple echo would have shown the problem. Surgery can possibly correct the condition.I wonder if it was a congenital heart issue like his father? Or maybe related to trying to live in the shadow of a famous father. Pete Maravich was one of the most offensive talented BB players ever. His ball handling and passing skills were off the charts and a great shooter. A bit of a tragic story, his father really pushed him to the limit and it took a toll on him. I believe Caitlin Clark broke his 3 year collegiate points scoring record in 4 years. He averaged over 40 pts a game in his 3 year career at LSU. His father Press coached LSU and based the offense around Pete. He had some big years in the NBA, averaging 25 pts + per game. Saw him go off for 69 pts against my Knicks back in the 70s. I know I talked more about the young man’s father and maybe that was the issue.
Mega +1That is why unless it’s a person directly connected to Rutgers it should not be posted.

What about grandchildren and nieces and nephews?Mods can we please create a pinned thread for the dead children of folks with no ties to Rutgers?
Thanks.
May I ask how old you are? He played college basketball in 1970. This is a football board. Some of us do not follow college basketball at all. Would you still think people who were not alive or young children when he played in college and don't follow coleges basketball would remember a record about a sport they don't follow? His scoring record held up for 50 years. I think it would still be remembered
From Wikipedia: Pete died from "a rare congenital defect: the left coronary artery, a vessel that supplies blood to the muscle fibers of the heart, was missing. His right coronary artery was grossly enlarged and had been compensating for the defect."So far no cause of death given .
Pistol Pete died at 40 from a rare heart condition .
Josh was only 42 when he passed

Well, there you go. I was in the crib, and as I noted, I don't follow basketball at all, and certainly not college hoops. But several times you marveled at the fact that people did not know who he was. Yes, his name was in the news when Caitlyn Clark broke the NCAA scoring record, but again, that event passed with many people seeing the headline and thinking, "who cares" because they don't care about basketball. I follow Rutgers hoops a bit, and for a very brief time, I followed Michael Jordan's career. And c'mon with Kareem. His name is ubiquitous beyond sports. The Red Hot Chili Peppers sang about Kareem in their song Magic Johnson. Those players transcended the sport. Pete? Again, who?I was in HS when he was playing for LSU. Do people remember Kareem? He was a few years older. A much better NBA career but Maravich was getting as much press as Kareem while in college.
Mediocre:Seriously? Pistol Pete Maravich set college hoops scoring records in the late 60s - early 70s before a mediocre NBA career.
