Tony Racioppi is a very well regarded QB coach and you can tell that he isnt just talking up AJ Surace, but really thinks he can play well at the P5 level. Everyone should watch this interview!
AJ is going to do very well after a year RS'ing and a year as the understudy. He has the measurements/IQ/pedigree BUT has played against AWFUl competition while in high school. This is a HUGE step up, to the B1G, and he/we are going to need/use the time - wisely - IMHO, to have him as close to ready as possible for start #1.

Every QB commit in recent years has been branded a savior for the program. Enough already. The overall talent level needs to improve for the entire roster.
Surace really should've played his last year with a Big North program or a Philly Catholic program to prepare him for the college game. Playing trash publics from Mercer County does nothing to prepare a QB for B1G football.
He actually discusses what happened with Art at Rutgers in this episode on AJ.
The majority of the OCs at RU haven't prepared a QB for B1G football either.

I am fully aware of the competition he played against in high school as Mercer County has been historically poor when it comes to football. However, I believe that being the son of an offensive minded college coach it should give him a leg up when it comes to the mental part of the game. So, if you can "see the field" then the other parts should come easier.
Remember Chas Dodd? Remember Ryan Cubit? Both offensive-minded coach's sons and Those and were hardly ready for BE competition let alone Big Ten. That's my point.

Racioppi kind of covered that with his "the 2nd string QB and the fans" comment. Funny, as he also said Rutgers is really the rule and not the exception. And he made it pretty clear a red shirt year would be beneficial.
I would argue getting a D1 scholarship makes you successful.
D1 scholarship and D1 starter. I think that's an important distinction.
He’s a trainer who starts working with these kids in middle school or high school. Them getting a scholarship means he helped them accomplish the goal they came to him for
He was on WFAN with Keith Pierson a few weeks ago talking glowingly about Tim Boyle and Tommy Devito, also former clients…the scouting reports on Surace are from a paid coach and his grandfather. I’ll remain skeptical.
no it's not and let's not play with goal posts. Coaching up any kid to D1 is a great success
That success is achieved at the high school level. I think most here are questioning success once in college.
Okay, has he had a trainee who has been successful as a D1 starter or NFL player? I figured that was implied as he has clearly placed players into D1 programs.
Wasn't Kenny Pickett playing against mostly "trash publics," as you call them. Didn't seem to hurt him, and it won't hurt this kid.
Dodd was a good QB given the OL he had. Not even Tom Savage could handle that, and he played in the Pros.

Great news for the future but will not be a factor next year. He will almost certainly redshirt.
Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach at the Prestigious Hun School in Princeton. Trained over 40 NFL QBs including 1st round picks Kenny Pickett, Robert Griffin as well numerous other draft picks. Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach at both HS level as well as the College level for over 13 years.
Is 40 enough?
right! this whole thread and the views by some are borderline asinine
blows my mind some of the people in this thread can be this critical here but make ever excuse in the book regarding Gav and his issues.
Where RU is the exception is that it's not just the 2nd string QB that's the savior. It's the QB that's still in high school.
Nothing but respect for Chas Dodd, no doubt!! That being said he would've RS'd as well as a true frosh in the B1G.
Here’s the thing. He probably worked with RG3 for 3 days at a camp. Is he actually responsible for his development. No. At same time, it’s very easy to say this kid didn’t work out or he was overrated etc. it’s really hard to get a D1 offer as QB. It’s even harder to actually start. It’s almost impossible to be excellent. It’s the hardest position in sports and only one guy plays.
Meanwhile, Ajani Shepard, who has the metrics mentioned above and has played vs better competition (beat Bosco BTW) will wind up transferring because he never got a legit shot against the “saviors” GW and AJ.
Wow. Shepard must have really impressed you in all of those practices you witnessed.
All I did was compare to high school careers and you’re gonna come back with that pithy remark? How typical. I’m sure you won’t mind when Shepard is eventually moved to TE.
Ajani gets his shot but he’s got to make it count. He’s had a year in the system and better to be ready to compete. No reason for someone like AJ to outshine him.
I said here or in another thread that Shep should transfer as we won't get a chance to play meaningfully here
