Imagine going back in time and telling fans, just wait, in the future Rutgers will be chosen for the Big Ten over all of these programs, and will beat all of them in back-to-back-to-back under Schiano. Truly a success story.

Mulcahy, not Pernetti. In fact, Pernetti almost ended our Big Ten dreams before they started due to his brutal mishandling of the Mike Rice scandal. I remember being extremely worried that the B1G would cancel the deal during that fiasco.
Pernetti wanted to fire Rice. Rutgers lawyers told him no, and then when it all blew up, he was the scapegoat. Chris Christie could have saved him but chose not to.

The shame of it is that the invite had come a couple of years earlier I'm pretty sure that Schiano wouldn't have left.

Greg Schiano explains why he left Rutgers in 2012 - The Scarlet Faithful
>“The National Football League was something I was not prepared for,” Schiano admitted. “I never prepared to be a head coach in the NFL. It came to me and I took it because I was afraid to be (at Rutgers).”
The reason Schiano was worried to stay at Rutgers was the conference expansion and the realization that the Big East was not going to survive.<

The Rice situation was not going to move the needle. They brought us in for TV's...And let's be honest, OSU just had the Tattoos fiasco/scandal and this is a conference that kept PSU in it. And Pernetti was the scape goat.

could be , the NFL is a dream job for most coaches .
Also I feel he had to know he was losing a lot of support of the fan base along with the RU administration because he wasn't reaching the expectations that came after he made RU FB a respected program.
RU fans were expecting him to have a top 10 type program and he wasn't reaching perennial top 25 status, while the administration wasn't as willing to give him what he wanted as it was before

I really like pernetti but you can’t say “your boss looked at the tapes” on syndicated radio when he claimed he didn’t do.
Basically flat out called Barchi a liar on the fan.
That might get you fired.
Although I think Tim was telling the truth and Barchi might of embellished.
I’m no lawyer but I don’t think you can do that if you want to keep your job.
Mulcahy, Schiano, pernetti, Barchi, Delaney,
Sonny Werblin,
Even “Bigger time sports” Bloustein himself.
thank you all.

The results on the field didn’t line up with the actual overall potential of the university compared to its counterparts. B1G leadership saw that. There were people inside RU who helped lead us to the promise land, but the bottom line is the potential had to be there and be understood to make RU an attractive potential member. Looking at where we are and where we’re going, we deserve to be where we are.

Rutgers does deserve to be where we are and for many reasons. And we just fit the profile of a B1G school. But even with football- GS 1.0 and all those players showed what we could possibly do. Even a couple of Flood teams. That first B1G season was great. We were putting players in the NFL that were real ballers. And while we may not have won a Conf Championship- we were very consistant. And 06/07/08 and start of 09 showed what the fan base can be too.
I just listened to these guys from VaTech in a different thread and they were super impressed and very surprised on our fanbase, the stadium and atmosphere. Said that the fans where great, best tailgate scene they have experienced in years and even the stadium had a very unique feel to it that was great. And not counting the horn- they were even surprised how loud we got.

Basketball and the non revenue sports have already proved they can match on the field and court - teams don't want to come to the RAC(yes, still going to call it that) - imagine the day (soon) that we have been to a bowl X number of years straight and we do pull off upsets on teams like Mich/PSU/OSU - the football stadium has the potential to be like the RAC. Small but intimidating.

The B1G let schools like NWU/Purdue/Indiana/Illinois suck for years. They are not stressing that we have not been winners yet.

This is not in question , he would have stayed .
Unless Schiano said this in an interview/press conference, there's really no way to know what he would have done. In my opinion, I think he still would have left for the NFL, as most coaches want to see if they can cut it in the pros before admitting that they're essentially lifelong college coaches. I think Greg probably would have celebrated the B1G achievement and then went on to Tampa Bay. Again, the only person who can truly answer this question is Greg Schiano.

And this really has nothing to do with just GS. It is with all coaches everywhere. 9 of 10 times a good G5 HC will jump at a P5 HC job unless they know that a better one is coming later. Same with a College HC- a NFL HC job is offered, they are taking it.
It would be no different than in real life with people that have that level of drive and ambition. As a VP of Sales- you get offered a CRO position, you most likely take it. You are a CRO/COO/CFO and offered an CEO position, same thing.

It does have to do with Greg. He did it. But you can’t blame him for it. A perfectly rational and reasonable career move

I agree.. Barchi did not find his gonads until the mob came for his job. He could have done it much earlier. Pernetti got screwed by all the pressures over athletic spending and Barchi did not support him when we should have. We should have hired Cristobal. Hill Jr. was a difficult case.. son of a legendary Rutgers coach.. budget pressures.. Mike Rice was not and hire.. who knew boot-camp-style coaching would be treated like a war crime? Not me.

You can say hiring Pike was a great move.. and it was.. but without the examples of Rice and Jordan... would Hobbs have made the same choice? There were no such examples for Pernetti to use for reference. Then you have the very strange case of replacing Pernetti with someone who quite possibly treated players worse than Rice treated his players. Julie Hermann. How does that happen if what Mike Rice did was so god-awful? It kinda tells me they just folded to media pressure firing Rice and Pernetti.

Pernetti obviously didn't force the tape issue with Barchi. He also hired two awful coaches in each big sport. Even Julie hired some good ones in the smaller sports. He was in way over his head.
Well said . People love pernetti here on this board for some weird reasons.
It was bob and schiano that got us to the altar with the BIG. Pernetti just had to walk down the aisle and say yes . He gets credit for it sure .

You're wrong. Pernetti did a helluva lot to keep us in the eyes of the Big 10. I knew a bunch of what was going on, but this article really lays out all that he did:

How Rutgers crashed the Big Ten

Don't get me wrong, both Mulcahy and Schiano laid the foundation for this, but the credit really is shared by all 3 of them. Without Mulcahy hiring Schiano and focusing on football, the upgrade of the team and the expansion of the stadium don't happen. Without Schiano, the building of the program doesn't happen. He walked into that interview with Mulcahy with a complete plan of everything that needed to change. It still blows my mind that when he came in, we had 1 full time person and a couple of part-timers for academic support. For ALL 28 sports. (This was before Mulcahy cut 6 sports.) It's so obvious that Grunninger and the Board just didn't want to invest any money in the major sports programs.

I give pernetti credit for sealing the deal . Any competent AD would have done it though. The heavy lifting was done by bob and Greg. They drove the ball down the field . Pernetti punched it in

We'll agree to disagree. Does the invite happen without Schiano and Mulcahy's contributions? No. Does it happen without Pernetti's contributions? No.

People should also consider why Pernetti might have had some gravitas with Delany and the Big Ten.

From 1994 to 2003, Pernetti worked in various television programming positions for ABC Sports. By 1996, he oversaw the day-to-day college football business for ABC Sports, managing relationships with college football bowl games. He left ABC Sports in 2003 and joined CSTV as Vice President of Programming & Talent. Pernetti managed the agreement between the Mountain West Conference and CSTV that produced the MTN network. In 2006, CSTV was acquired by CBS Television Pernetti was promoted to oversee the content strategy, rights acquisitions, and relationships for CBS College Sports Network.
That was all before he did the Rutgers radio broadcast and later became Rutgers AD. This is what, I think, Rutgers was able to make the TV market argument so well.. its AD had the experience.. he had real-world experience and not some favorite son elevated from athletic depart positions climbing the ranks inside some old boys network.
