Greg Schiano: Rutgers football is closing in on a time when fans can ‘plan their holiday trips around our bowls’

One question that would never get a truthful answer is:

“If we hired someone else and not HC Schiano in 2020 would people still be saying results don’t matter for 5 years? Unreasonable to expect to be competitive yet after HC Ash. Rutgers is different and requires more time. Have to wait until the HC has a fieldhouse then evaluate him.”
GS was good enough to turn what ash turned into ashes into something mediocre, and that will likely never get past the big 4-6 top teams in the conference. No fancy field house is going to fix that. RU does not spend to a level commensurate with its competition…so it is always fighting from behind. There is the chance of catching lightning in a bottle from time to time, but that’s not a process, that’s luck.

You are wrong . Perception of the program is influenced by the results on the field. Nothing less, nothing more.

Game. Set. Match.
Add to that every coach in the NFL knowing that players from our program are well prepared for work at the next level. And team oriented.

N I L , schmeN I L. NFL is where the real $ is. For lunch pail NFL players, RU is a top prep program for their career. Once we have some success the stars will follow as well.

Thats were you're wrong, Al. There's a handful of vocal fans here who hope we don't succeed to feed their own egos.
stop, this is flat out retarded
the issue here is that many fans almost worship the alter of Greg. Many other fans see things realistically, then you have the fringe like Al.

No one here wants RU to fail, that's pure poppycock

One point on disagreement: The main (only?) argument for HC Schiano 2.0 was that it wouldn't be hard to recruit out the gate.

Specifically, the program didn't have the time to take 3-4 years to turn over the roster. ONLY Schiano could step in and upgrade the team immediately (unless we wanted to spend HC Saban money) and get the team competitive. We couldn’t take a chance on waste even more years of another coach finding his footing.

Well that’s exactly what is happening anyway.
I always thought that argument was false. As we are seeing - even if Schiano brought in the #1 class in 2021, those kids were playing for a couple years. The main argument in Schiano’s favor was ever accurate.
I don't remember that argument, but I agree with you that it is a false argument.

Definitely maybe is the correct answer. Any realistic person would recognize how long the first rebuild took 2000 to 2005, and the current rebuild is no easier. The only caveat I have is that if RU had hired Mike Leach or an air raid offense disciple, perhaps the offense would be further along, but then maybe the defense would be worse.

Nick is right, that was a huge part of the argument regarding recruiting

I guess we disagree.

I don’t think any rutgers fans really wants us to lose. When I predicted ash would get us smashed , I sure as hell wanted to be wrong and not be subjected to that transpired.

I guess I could see if you really believe schiano isn’t the guy, you want to move on from him as quickly as possible . But I don’t think that strokes anyone’s ego. If your ego is based on rutgers losing football games, than you would have off the charts high self esteem.

I hear you but even those of us who vehemently disagree on Greg's approach and abilities are here because we love RU and want her to succeed. I'd be ecstatic if Greg made us a perennial power but I don't see him as the 'savior'. I pray I'm wrong

HC Schiano WAS the shortcut to turning things around according to people.
And we couldn't waste another 4 years with a successful G5 or P5 coordinator learning on the job in the Big Ten and turning the program around.

Clearly an awful lot of our fans simply have lost all confidence in the coach and don't believe he'll ever get better than mediocre, if that good--and by mediocre I don't even mean 6-6 or 7-5 with 3 or 4 wins in conference and occasional wins over Penn State or a good Wisconsin team or Michigan, but more like 2 wins in conference, with 3 in a good year, all against bad teams, and the rest of the wins against downy soft OOC competition. The bare minimum of mediocrity, a step above bad. As such, they're not interested in a small uptick in play on the field because that wouldn't portend much. "Great, we're on our way to (dull) wins over Temple, Vanderbilt, Indiana, Illinois, Norfolk State and Michigan State in a bad year (and a** kickings from everyone else) and a 4th rate bowl...forever."

IDK about that. Did some deep sea fishing. Sure, the overwhelming fan favorite was Greg. But others offered alternatives.

@RUScrew85 and others were not in that camp:

This guy had a really excellent take:

No love for Al Golden (some love, actually):

Fleck?

Also, very good point that 4 years ago, his salary was one of the lowest 4 in the B1G, and regardless of the narrative on what/who killed the 2.0 deal in the first round, there were probably not a lot of candidates lined up to take the job at what Rutgers as offering, except testimony from Bielema in his lawsuit against Arkansas indicated he may have been runner up:

Butch Jones love and hate:

Moorhead and Hafley?

You and @MrsScrew seemed to be at odds during this tense period. Mrs. Shift did not pay attention and barely listened to my daily updates on the drama unfold. Maybe my posts say otherwise, but my recollection is that I was fine with Greg being hired, but if RU and Greg could not come to agreement, someone else could have come in and done a fine job. Not sure if the Bielema runner up rumors are true, but wonder how that would have went. While last year was ugly for football, there were lots of things that contributed, the biggest probably being both Vedral and Gavin getting injured. I'm mildly optimistic that we are on the right path.

IIRC that was kinda my position. I'm not a huge Schiano fan anymore but I think he was the best the RU admin was going to pay for. I'm mildly hopeful right now. This year will be big but I fear Wimsatt won't get it done - and that's on Greg's recruiting if Wim fails.

Misjudged his talent or they haven’t developed him properly?

I think he’s going to be improved

perception can be influenced on how the media covers a program and can make the program slow improvement look like the program is a failure or ignore the improvement completely.

But you're right if you want to claim " Perception of the program is influenced by the results on the field" ( From what is seen by the individual fan, my addition)

but he's not wrong

he was cast aside at OSU as well.

Huh, he wasn't successful here is 1.0? He literally created the program and right before he left we were bringing in the top recruits from NJ. The consistency of having him while others traded coaches was leading to recruiting success.

He should have never coached in the NFL. He’s not an NFL coach. Does Urban Meyer suck too because he wasn’t good in the pros?

Someone mentioned the UT situation. I don’t remember him coaching there. Then folks are citing OSU and how he was run out. Really? Run out? Last I heard from Urban was he was a valuable member of the staff.

Ru remains in a deficit. Are we going to buy him out? Then pay double for someone who may be good? Lots of busts of coaches who were supposedly great and turned out to not be or left for greener pastures shortly after success.

I think he needs at least 6 and likely 8. But if we continue to get blown out, the leash gets shorter. Anything shorter than 6 is a complete waste of time and resources L

Please try not to use that word … this board had several posters who several (2) years ago made it their personal crusade. And the actual word the offender used was not used in the wrong context.I will always call out the educated idiots who hate the guy. One in particular who is around Schiano’s age and area where he was raised. Coincidence? I think not.

I don’t hate the person. I hate the coaching incompetence/ 1950 philosophy/ undeserved contract.

You hate his defensive philosophy? Really, I think his D when on point is pretty badass.

Offense? Ok maybe but are teams like Wisconsin or MSU successful with a similar one?

Lol are you his agent? You get sand in your v when anyone criticizes him. Get it through your skull: his team was #99 in Year 3. That's terrible. Maybe they improve this year, maybe not. But that sucks after 3 years.

Can’t get anymore real than wins, losses, points scored, etc.

I can post those if you would like. Or perhaps it would be too real.

It’s not like we are scoring 30ppg and people are saying we need to step it up.
We literally didn’t score more than 25pts once last year. Not once.

Excluding Wagner because I’m sure someone will point that out.

Our scoring defense ranked 95th in the nation last year…. You call that badass???

You see THIS is the problem. Any moron with eyes can see this is failing but because our coaches name is Greg Schiano, folks who are stuck in 2006 can’t get over their memories and judge the guy objectively…

No! 95th in scoring defense is NOT ‘badass’, we were tied with TEMPLE in scoring defense, absolutely absurd statement.

Choosing to run out the 1st half clock with the ball after getting a 1st down isn’t a money issue.

Hiring an OC with a history of slow, run based offensive philosophy isn’t a money issue.

But sure, gatekeep being able to have opinions based on arbitrary money levels.
Since you brought it up - what level of donation earns “be critical of the HC” status?
Just want to check before I post again.
