I played baseball a long time, there’s nothing as advantageous as knowing what’s coming.
The better the pitcher the more of an advantage it is to you.
Obviously at the level I played, if JR Richard threw his 90 mile an hour slider where he wanted you couldn’t hit it anyway, but if you knew it was coming and he made even a slight mistake by a few inches, you could actually get in a pretty good swing.

I faced many a pitcher in my day from minor leagues, Latin winter ball to the big leagues.
Where survival was your main goal.

Yup. They somehow have "Rutgers" on their roadside marker thingy on the pike. It's in plain lettering. I always wish they would add a big red block "R"...

Early in his career he tended to be a bit wild.

My bother, at age 12, was physically ahead of his peers. He was 6'1, threw in the low 70s, and we had to bring his birth certificate to every game. He also threw strike after strike. One game he was getting hit, and I told him to throw one over the batter's, his friend's, head. Went on to dominate the rest of the game. A long story to say I agree. Some pitchers allow batters to get too comfortable.

When I coached little League I had a player that threw really hard and had great control. Opponents realized this and started digging in and getting good cuts at him. I called time out and went to the mound. The kid asked "what's wrong?". I told him nothing, but that he should throw the second pitch after I leave 2 feet behind the batter. He said "what?!" . Told him make sure not to hit him and trust me.

The over reaction from everybody was priceless. From that point guys were shaking in their shoes. I think he struck out the side last 3 innings. I explained later the reasoning. Doubt in a batter's mind of pitcher's control is an advantage. Nobody was afraid of being hit.

Pitching question: my son is 7 (2nd grade in the fall)
Should I have him test out pitching this summer? Just a little bit.

He's still working on the mechanics of just consistently throwing to me. I think our 2nd grade league has a mix of coach/player pitch.

I don't remember when I started player pitch.
