WV has about the least restrictive gun laws in the nation and among the fewest mass shootings. CA has the most restrictive gun laws and the most mass shootings.

We have 50 states with 50 different sets of gun laws. The data from all those different states is wildly inconsistent and inconclusive when it comes to correlation between gun laws and mass shootings. It’s a bit more consistent with ordinary gun violence, but even there, it’s not highly consistent.

Looking at other nations is not helpful when we have 50 examples of more relevant data here at home. If you are going to look at gun stats from other nations, then you have to also look at numbers of illegal guns. We have a huge number of illegal guns in this country. The people who own those illegal guns are not adhering to existing gun laws, or esisting gun bans.

Creating more gun laws or bans will not eliminate the problem of criminals perpetrating gun violence on the innocent using their illegally obtained guns. All it would do is disarm law abiding people, a great many of which do not live within rapid response distance of police.

So more gun laws or bans would merely put innocent people in a position of being unable to defend themselves against well-armed criminals.

That article cites stats about estimated gun ownership levels. One wonders how the estimates for Yemen and Serbia were arrived at. For that matter, how were they determined for the US and all the other countries listed?

Here in the US, law enforcement estimates the number of illegal guns. But they have no good way of knowing what the real numbers are. I’m guessing it’s much higher than the estimates because criminals don’t exactly advertise their illegal ownership of weapons. Especially not to law enforcement.

At least the article attempts to differentiate between suicide gun deaths and homicides. Most anti-gun articles lump the two together, which is very misleading.

Another stat not often differentiated is legal gun violence. Those numbers are often lumped in with illegal gun violence. Which again is very misleading.

If you mean by "off the street" illegal guns. I agree. Law-abidding and mentally stable citizens should be able to arm themselves. Guns are a bit of a red herring. The real issue is mental illness but that's a more complicated issue to tackle and can't be exploited for political purposes.
