Really thought Pike blew it today

Cliff gets his third on a phantom foul a Pike takes him out with about 13 min to go and that was it for Rutgers. Pike sat Cliff as we watched the lead evaporate and kept sitting him until we were losing.
He finally brought him back and I yelled at the tv, "two minutes too late!"

And that was all she wrote. We never recovered.

Meanwhile having Reiber and Palquist on the court at the same time is like telling the opposition "just take it to the hoop and we'll let you score".

And they did.

You do remember he picked up his 4th almost right after he came in. Even then, Cliff wasn’t stopping that 19-0 run enough for us to have a chance at winning. That’s all on the players not being able to make a basket for 10 minutes.
Extremely highly unlikely there is a 19-0 run and 10 ming without a FG with Cliff on the court

Cam doesn't have a quick trigger. I love his game but we're looking for him to do more than he's really capable of.

The team has done a good job in reducing their turnovers per game. We absolutely must limit the bad possessions. The missed layups and the missed open shots are unavoidable with this team. The 10 to 15 terrible decisions cost the team wins.

I… actually agree? Kinda?

I think a lot of coaches make this mistake but Cliff played only 24 minutes and did not foul out. That means, by definition, we could’ve got more minutes from him

He also could have played less if he left him out there and he picked up another foul

Pike maybe should have risked it bc of how poorly Wolf and Dean were playing. Our only real chance of winning was risking it with Cliff

One of the challenges is after Cliff picks up a third foul in today’s game or other games, he becomes more conservative. Less aggressive and that hurts his defense. And then makes a bad decision and makes a bad foul.
If we think about the rest of the regular season and into tournament time, we need a strategy (at minimum without foul trouble) how are we going to sub for Cliff for 10-12 minutes a game with as little dropoff as possible. Someone is not going to mysteriously appear. The bench is the bench. Physically we know Dean can not match up with most B1G centers. To me Wolf is the only possible option. He showed some flashes earlier this season then seemed to go backwards. He has the size but needs to improve his defense in particular. We need to go into overtime practice with him. We need an alternative to Jay Young working one on one with him.
I know it’s late in the season, but there is no other option , Cliff cannot play 40 minutes a game.

Then he would've played more.. the minutes played plus however long he took to pick up the fifth.

Yeah, this is kind of what I think. He should've taken the chance a bit earlier. This is far from the only reason or even primary reason we lost.. I just think it was a bit of a mistake.

Having Simpson in the game, who can't shoot, for the 10 minute scoring drought instead of Oscar was also a mistake.

Cliff needs to stop picking up fouls on the offensive side of the court.
Officials sucked . You would think scirotto owes us a few calls.

I made a mistake watching this game. I shouldn’t have watched if we were going to lose.

I also made a mistake taking Route A because I shouldn’t have known the only light would have been red and I should have opted for the slightly longer Route B.

I should have had nachos instead of popcorn. Popcorn leaves stuff in my teeth that are tough to get out even with floss.

I should have taken Biology instead of Earth Science in 9th grade. I would have been on a better science track and could have been a doctor.

All of his fouls were minimal. Life on the road but he deserves better.

Cam is hesitant when he his not confident
Which had now grown into giving up 3 attempts and dribbling to the elbow for a fade away. He certainly does not have an MJ fadeaway

bunch of Monday morning QBs here.

if Dean hit 2 3s and led a comeback would people still say Pike made the wrong decision?

would the same folks be upset if Pike leaves Cliff in and he fouls out with 8 minutes left and Illinois wins by the same score?
There is no good answer when the bench players aren't productive on offense or defense which is similar to last season.

Wolf is terrible l
As the season progresses there is less time to practice we have players on our team that need that practice to continue to develop.
Wolf will continue to get better.
Need to clean up some of his habits like stalling in the post with the ball.
