Turkey and Iran are among the most deadly for earthquakes
The Anatolian Plate (in between Eurasian, African and Arabian plates) has some of most deadly dynamics.
Despite that, US gov/military staff who lived in Turkey say (Reddit) Turkish construction goes light on rebar.
You can see tall buildings just tipping/sliding off of foundations

This amount of movement is on par with the similarly-sized 1908 San Francisco Earthquake. I posted a picture above on the fencepost that moved 16 feet near the quake epicenter.
Over 20K dead as of now.
Apparently newer construction is supposed to have been built to standards that could withstand quakes like this, but it appears that a number of new buildings still collapsed.

I don't think too much on earth can withstand an earthquake measuring 7.8 and minutes later another 7.5, not to mention the 100's of aftershocks
They go light on rebar to cut costs, then kick the local gov some cash so they look the other way.

Yeah, this is problematic. I know a LOT of old buildings have been retrofitted to withstand earthquakes of this size, but many have not been updated. I remember from the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake that older apartment buildings - many with ground-floor parking were particularly vulnerable, and especially older buildings on fill or sand/silt. There has been a lot of retrofitting over the years and new construction has strict design standards, but many older buildings could collapse in a quake.
Horrific.
Living my whole life in New Jersey I don't know what it feels like to have that happen.
