Two main reasons why we lost tonight...

Before I begin, I just want to wish Mag a speedy recovery. Secondly, I was really proud of how the team stepped up tonight in this close loss and I'm glad to see Cam back to being more Cam even though he didn't hit his threes down the stretch. Also kudos to Palmquist for keeping us in the game with his knock-down threes when we needed it most.

Now, onto why we lost tonight. First, we were in the position to once again steal another game on the road and increase our lead as the second place team. Secondly, now, with this loss, it's going to be a mess in the middle where we will sit.

Here are my reasons why we lost. (1) Caleb thinks he's freakin' Steph Curry, when he is one of the WORST offensive players out there. And tonight, I don't know what the eff he was thinking, but he was dribbling around like a maniac trying to play hero ball. That's NOT his game. His game is driving to the basket or 15 foot jump shoots. PERIOD. He screwed up so many possessions tonight. I counted at least 7 wasted possessions. (2) The other reason we lost is because Paul didn't show up tonight. He played timidly, when he had the advantage all night to drive the ball and either get fouled, or dish it to Cliff or an open wing man. He did neither. And when he did get into the paint, he refused to shoot, which was a head scratcher. He could have taken at least 4 shots in the paint and he passed it up. And two of those times, rather than going to an open Cam or Andre, he passed to Caleb, who once again believed he should shoot because he's wide open. Hey, McConnell, there's a reason why Indiana and every other team we face leaves you open. It's because you can't hit an outside jumper, especially from 3 point land. What is Caleb shooting from 3 point land? Ten percent? Why Pike and the staff don't get all over him I don't know. Unless they do, and he still ball hogs.

We played hard nosed defense and I'm really proud of everyone. We held Indiana to no baskets in about an 8 minute stretch in the second half. But we were horrible with our offensive possessions, especially the glaring absence of Paul shooting and driving and Caleb thinking he's the MAN on offense.

We had a real shot at winning tonight, and those two really blew it. Now it's on to Illinois, which is another difficult place to play. I'm hoping we bounce back and go 1-1 this week, but even if we go 0-2 the toughest part of our schedule will be over. Even with Mag gone for the season, I still believe we can win 12 or 13 games and finish in the top 4 and get a double bye.

Paul is so hesitant to shoot he passes up so many open shots it’s just ridiculous and it costs us

Reason for our loss: Our field goal percentage in the second half was awful.
Defense was excellent all game against a tough opponent.
Absolutely correct on the D part. But the offense suffered because Caleb and Paul were awful tonight.

Agree with OP. Might have said it a bit softer myself, especially Paul being more aggressive and taking it to the hoop. That’s been a recurring theme in some games this season. He’s too unselfish.
This game was there for the taking. Kudos to our reserves who stepped up and our 2nd half D.

I know you think I might or should be softer, but those two really failed us tonight, and I love both kids.

Throw in the fact that TJD dominated Cliff and you are spot on. Caleb needs to only shoot when he is within 10 ft of the basket, he is a terrible shooter.

Great take. BTW, IMO, Cliff is NOT ready for the NBA. He has terrible hands and he has not perfected a jump shot near the basket. He also needs to learn how to shoot both right handed and left handed near the basket. IMO, he needs another year to work on that, or he may get that kind of exclusive help in the G league.

The G league coaching will help Cliff much more than another year of college. He’s made no jump from last year to this year.

Caleb is "one of the worst offensive players" ? Who's he better than ? Miller ? Maybe. Not even sure about that anymore.

Wait, but Cliff worked all off season on his mid range and 3pt shot. The 3 pointer he chucked up was disjusting, he needs to put that away for good.

We didnt miss Mag in this game. We lost because Caleb and Paul stunk up the court.
Unnecessary roughness.
Amen. They really didn't show up tonight. And Caleb needs to STOP shooting. He is IMO, the worst shooter on the team.
Correction: they played badly on offense, particularly shooting, but they showed up on defense and did do some ok things on offense. Caleb had 8 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block (and 0 TOs) and was everywhere, while Paul had 5 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals (and 3 TOs).

Who ever can get him to move his feet, is who he needs.
I said it before and I’ll say it on this knight as it’s appropriate. He need to call Indiana Alum
AJ Moye!!! He works with young men and teaches foot work which he displayed in spades. He has worked with some of the RU players. Cliff needs to spend the summer with him. Not shooting Air balls
MOVE YOUR FEET CLIFF!!!

Numbers, I agree. Defense is where Caleb always shines. But tonight, he believed he was the guy to shoot. He wasn't. He was awful. And Paul was so damn timid tonight. It's beyond head scratching.

Agree completely about the offense, but also think if being very tough on players for one thing, pointing out what they did well is worthwhile, assuming there is something, as there was tonight.

The other massive issue was that Cliff was owned on the boards. Davis had 18 to his 4. He just doesn’t box out. Or gets beat to it every time.
I like Cliff but tonight to was weak. He seemed to be standing around a lot, not calling for the ball.

We just don't have anyone that can take their man off the dribble to close a game. This is where we really miss Geo and Ron. We have folks that can make big shots like Cam, Maggie, Andre, Maggie BUT none of them can create that big shot opening on their own. This is where I see Ace and Delquan stepping in. Maybe Gavin but need to watch his game more. He strikes me as a quiet 30 point type scorer.

The margin for error is slim on a team that has great difficulty scoring 65 points. Its a collective team failure because the skill set of shooting is lacking.Yes, Caleb took too many shots and Paul was too passive in taking shots around the basket.Indiana went over seven minutes without making a basket yet Rutgers failed to take the lead.

I think Bardo said it was 10 minutes without a made basket.

That's not even close to true. Cliff has made huge strides offensively. But he still has big holes in his game.

Paul was a hot mess tonight no question. He had an uncontested layup to get it to a one-point deficit and dribbled off his foot or something and had to kick it out and we got nothing on the possession. Then two missed front ends of a 1 and 1.

Net man up??? We won't win **** if Paul doesn't get it together. Hugely disappointing performance from our "leader"

It’s hard to argue with most of this. Caleb, a bad shooter, chucking up long shots on 1-12 shooting and Paul a good shooter taking only 4 shots is a recipe for a loss, especially on the road.

That play was a real head scratcher. It looked like he recovered but in a position to make a move to the rim but instead kicked it out to Caleb for a three. Huh???

Another sad thing about Caleb's offense tonight was he had that really nice move early getting to the rim so it seemed like he might have been on tonight

Cliff's rebounding and defense was not good tonight. He cannot have 4 boards in 32 minutes
