'24 not likely according to ESPN. Something to do with FOX contract and Big12.

The next time anybody tells you that the Grant of Rights doesn't matter...
I’ve always thought the GOR had teeth and at most a year or two early release, if that.

This possibly could have been done a little early if Fox and ESPN both owned SEC rights or if the B12 and SEC rights were both owned by Fox or ESPN in total.

The B12 and Yormark have been open to letting them go early in return for home OOC games against Texas/OU and money but that’s only part of the equation. There still has to be an agreement to make Fox whole for losing marquee names of Texas/OU. Multiple moving parts makes it harder to come to an agreement. Looks like Fox will take the same tact CBS did with the SEC and just ride things out til the end and then move on when the time comes.

If it was just one network it might be easier if they thought they could make more money (still doubtful) but 2 competing networks no chance without big $$ changing hands.

I remember reading an article where a lawyer said something to the effect of "don't even try it, if you challenge a GOR you're going to lose, the contracts are airtight and all written in the same language."

GORs very tough to break
OU + TX could decide it’s not worth it to try w the lawyers, cost headaches as they only have 2 years left
ACC different in that they have 13 years remaining
Noles Clemson Miami etc have been looking into getting out and will have been taking notes of B12 situation
They’ll eventually get out of it w help from lawyers networks etc but when and at what cost is the million dollar question

Some tangential realignment news with regards to the PAC12

Interesting, Pac-12 trying to tap the Dallas-FW Texas market. Texas is known for football but is becoming more of a basketball state. I believe last year's #1 HS team was Duncanville. They have also hosted 7 final fours since 2000.

Kliavkoff was at the SMU basketball game “incognito” but he was found by the media in the arena with the SMU prez, AD and head of their BOG. They’re having trouble with their media deal if it’s not obvious considering it’s not been finalized yet.

Article is paywall but posting for the comments in the tweet.

Don’t be surprised if the B12’s next move is to make a run at the AZ schools, and possibly UT/CO.

Until the PAC12 gets a TV contract and signs a GOR, everyone of those schools know they are in a game of musical chairs.
Yeah they're vulnerable to both B12 (4 Corner Schools) and B1G raiding (Bay Area schools plus Oregon/Washington) until they get a media deal/GOR in place. If they don't by summer, it's really gonna be open season.

It’s been written off in the past but as long as the PAC12 doesn’t have a deal I wouldn’t dismiss the idea. Seems like a deal might rely heavily on streaming too and that also might not be as appealing for some schools in terms of exposure.

Rittenberg talks about the idea of PAC12 schools in the vid clip accompanying the article.

Seems like no. They got exactly what they contractually agreed to, no more no less. That is not getting screwed. Getting screwed is when you DON'T get what you've contractually agreed to.
If the B1G adds any of Cal/Stanford/Oregon/Washington, I'd fully expect them to buy their way in over time like RU and UMD did.

no way b12 is getting a GOR as many of the schools that will be there will know they wouldn't be able to leave for greener pastures and seeing how ACC is doing, they'd be nuts to sign one

I’m sure ESPN is looking to merge B12 and P12 effectively. Try to shut out BIG. I think BIG needs to add more P12 to make the additions make sense and create a national conference.

Stanford would never agree to that type of arrangement. You would also have a tough time getting the Regents of the U of Cal system to agree to a deal that treats Cal as a second-class citizen to UCLA. Our alternative was the American Conference, we had our backs against the wall, we had zero leverage.

The Big Ten can add just about any school in the country ( not in the ACC) any time they choose. No possible candidate is signing up for a GOR and taking a chance on missing out on a super conference invite.

GOR is a pretty big obstacle but as Texas and Oklahoma proves, it is not impossible

Bodes goes well for an early release for a few ACC schools, as the conference will likely dissolve in the next 2 to 3 years.

ESPN will have a big saying in this as they cable networks helped broker the deal with Oklahoma & Texas.

For what it’s worth, the ACC brass has been in meetings in Charlotte since Wednesday - will be an interesting few years for sure as the conference realignment puzzle is not over by a long shot

Big 12 GOR ends June of 25. The ACC ends in 2036. Big difference. The ACC is between a rock and a hard place. If they release the schools from the GOR they could get raided . If they uphold the GOR the whole conference falls further behind. If ESPN really wanted to help the ACC they would give them a better contract.(yes ESPN calls the shots there).
Again the Big Ten and the SEC (to a less extent) are driving the bus. If they hold at 16 they’re good if they expand the BIG can go west or wait and sign ACC schools. In the meantime they will keep distancing themselves from three of the four other p5 conferences.

Acc can dissolve if majority schools want out thereby dissolving GOR

Will be fascinating to see what happens, as there’s a bunch of viable schools (not on B1G or sec level), but enough to cause friction

You get fsu, Clemson, unc, Miami, Duke, uva, vt, nc State to start realizing their fate is bad if things remain status quo, that moves needle

Add in ville + gt, there’s your majority
Wake, Cuse + BC will never be relavent

There’s the rub. If GOR is dissolved there’s a possibility the ACC is too. If the SEC takes 4 schools and the BIG takes 2 and ND .You may end up with a cluster of ACC,Big 12 and PAC 10 programs that will could be picked up down the road (some won’t)Is it inevitable? Absolutely not, but it could happen.
The only way I see the ACC being viable, is if ESPN either gives them a better contract or let’s them generate more revenue from other media outlets.

I guess true.
Better way to put it is they got screwed in the negotiations.

They did get a lifeline though. In time it won’t matter. The whole university has grown leaps and bounds since being admitted. You really can’t put a price tag on that.
The progress that all sports have made is nothing short of a miracle and we still don’t have the same capital to work with as our conference mates ( because of loans).

I don't believe it's a majority and think that's just false rumors online. It takes 3/4 of members to expel another member. It doesn't make sense that it wouldn't also take a super majority to dissolve the conference.

I see it the same way I saw the B12. GORs have teeth and it's extremely difficult to get out of when there is still a long duration in them. Many people, journalists included, thought no way Texas/OU are staying that long and will get out in a year or 2 at most. I was thinking a year or 2 early at most, if that. It ended up being a year early and it still took a lot of negotiation, not just among the conference and the departing schools but the networks too. Just like the B12, 1-2 years early somewhere in the mid 2030s I can believe but not a decade plus out.

A more realistic outcome until then is some sort of uneven revenue sharing model. But even for that, I'd wonder if it would only come about if the schools with greater status agreed to stay longer than the mid 2030s. If they're going to leave anyway then what's the point of uneven revenue share for the smaller status schools. They're better off to just ride the horse until it drops then deal with the fallout in the mid 2030s. There's no benefit for doing an uneven revenue share if the higher status schools don't extend the GOR further than the mid 2030s.
