I was reading thru the old transfer portal thread from.March. Most of us got it wrong. I wanted 3 transfers (lol) - Sessoms or Hampton, Wright and Neal Quinn.

Many labeled Pikiell a failure when he missed on Sessoms, Hampton, Wright and passed on Quinn (allegedly).

I only checked.Quinn's stats: Averaging 8 ppg in 21 minutes per game. Started all 16 games.

Sessoms is averaging a high amount at 23 ppg but looks like a guy who needs the ball in his hands a lot.

We only got 1 transfer and Cam Spencer is averaging 13 ppg and shooting 44% on threes.

What was being said about the guy who is at Penn State that can shoot?

Funk
I was super dismissive of him. I kind of still am -- a career 34% shooter, he's over 40% this year. That's basically all their success this season:

Funk - 34% career, 40% this year
Lundy - 36% career, 40% this year
Wynter - 35% career, 38% this year
Dread - 36% career, 44% this year

(Career numbers include this year because I'm lazy, so their numbers coming into this season were worse than that even)

I get that Pickett is so good that he draws the defensive attention to open up shots but still.

I'll admit I watch very little of PSU, but when I have he seems like a volume shooter. I am hoping as the season progresses Cam takes more shots. I think we are gradually seeing him taking more shots. To me what's important is that he is fully comfortable when we get to March.

If we’re being fair the Rutgers staff made Wright the number 1 priority over cam spencer so while they deserve credit for landing spencer, they also got lucky that Wright picked Colorado.
Didn't Cam enter the portal and almost immediate commit to Rutgers?

Can't blame the staff if Cam wasn't in the portal at the time

I tried to explain over a year ago that John Harrar was a space eating undersized 5 at PSU, who is really just a grinder who can get offensive rebounds and was solid in the low post. But he was a very limited player and not a good passer, so he impacted shooting percentages all over the PSU roster. Pike among others at Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan and others all wanted him, but he would have been backing up Cliff, despite others saying Harrar is better than Cliff (he's nowhere near Cliff defensively or a presence in the paint). At least Neal Quinn would have been a player to matchup in a game against Edey, Hunter Dickinson or others.

In terms of what makes PSU better, they're better off with the paint cleared out, without Harrar and instead, they're running Jalen Pickett into the mid post or low post in the Harrar role......only problem for opponents is in 2022-23, it's taken teams a long time to catch up to what PSU has been doing, but Pickett in an excellent low post player as a 6'4 shooting guard......and he's an excellent passer. He is a shooters version of Paul Mulcahy and Funk, Lundy and others at PSU are parked at the 3 point lines, benefitting from Pickett's playmaking.

I have no doubt that Ethan Wright is as good as Cam Spencer, but where you play and in what offense or system, matters more. Wright would have done fine at RU.

The key is we get TWO full seasons of Cam Spencer vs 1 of Ethan Wright, which is always been the key in the portal. Spencer is also used to having to dominate the ball and create offense at Loyola MD, which he's starting to get comfortable doing here now,.something Wright really never had to do at Princeton....add in Spencer's ability to read plays on defense and you add in a steal or two a game.

Looks like Ethan Wright announced he was going to Colorado on April 14th and cam announced he was coming here on April 19th so I’m sure they were talking to both at the same time. I know we chose spencer over Marcus Hammond and Amir Dawes so they def deserve credit for that.

We needed to get a legit 4 and a PG. It didnt happen.

Who was the PG/combo guard we tried to get after Spencer that ended up choosing maybe FL unexpectedly at the last minute?

Kyle Lofton. He's been decent, probably an upgrade over Simpson for this season but not a superstar. And not a salve to our shooting woes (30% from 3)

And yet, we are still offensively challenged to the point where we have to play great defense every night in order to have a chance to win

The plan is not a plug and play, throw a bunch of players together and hope it works.....we kinda tried that last year and added Ralph Agee and asked him to play the 5, when he was a 4.....added Hyatt because it was a no Brainer but had some unknowns in regard to Jaden Jones. Jones wasn't in the mode of being a developed complete player and the staff decided to not burn any minutes on him.

Mag is developing, others are developing while winning games. There are no "finished products ".....you do realize Myles Johnson was eating Zach Edey for lunch in Edeys freshman season. Purdue decided to keep playing the 3* that no one wanted and now he's turned into a player. He's not a lock NBA player, but he's damn sure unique and dominant at this level of CBB.

Which program in the B1G has all developed players who are ready from Day 1?? It's one thing to be critical, it's another to say "it should be done like this program, they're winning games"......

I'll give you a hint, at least FOUR B1G programs have watched what Pike and RU have developed and are pivoting towards what RU is doing. Recruit great kids, develop, selectivity from the portal and play good/great defense.

Northwestern is the program that decided to get real and start defending and they too are now winning OR, are much tougher than years past. Is any of this relevant at all?? We aren't Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, UNC etc

Funk is lighting it up from 3 this evening. Has a quick release and shoots from well beyond the 3pt line. I have seen portions of other games and he has not been as prominent as he has been this evening.
