No Tailgating for Championship Game

I heard this elsewhere and wasn’t too surprised.

Giants tried this a while back: limiting it, had to buy a pass. Not sure if they still do it.

Why? Don’t tell me this is due to covid restrictions. Was supposed to be out there next weekend and we knew someone who wanted to do a tailgate.

36 has part of the reason. Just like the Super Bowl, parking space will be taken over by sponsor displays. Attendees will probably be bussed from another location

The lack of onsite parking at Super Bowl venues has much less to do with "sponsor displays" and much more to do with security.

Call it what you want but those parking spaces won't be empty, even with no cars in them.

I'm not familiar with SoFi, and don't know how many parking spaces there are immediately adjacent to the venue.

At SB sites with a lot of on site parking (think Meadowlands, for example) the League's business occupies a relatively small amount of real estate - and the official NFL tailgate venue takes up most of that. The rest of the parking lot stands empty on gameday. The entire facility is shut down at or around sunset the day prior and is swept by local law enforcement, the FBI, USSS and US Army CBRN teams.

It's really important to note that there aren't a lot of people affected by this. Depending on venue size, only 5 - 10% of all Super Bowl seats are made available to the general public. The rest are distributed to the teams / players, NFL personnel and their families and NFL business partners. Guests staying at the official League hotel property are bussed directly to the stadium (with police escort, via closed roads).

Sofi stadium is surrounded by parking, so I'm a little surprised by this. The stadium is also near the "Fabulous" Forum and the new Clippers Arena. There is also a casino nearby and a large commercial development is underway, ala around the Staples Center, err Crypto.com Arena. The difference, however, is the Staples Center area is near downtown LA and in a walkable part of town. The Sofi area is the sort of suburbia people may think about when they think about El Lay.

What's next a booing surcharge? Move all the games to pay per view?

This is an excellent analogy. Best one I've seen by far.

But when did it start?
Were schools charging "mandatory seat fees" 30 years ago?
When did it become "We can't compete unless fans step up and subsidize us. It's your responsibility to donate and fund our budget."

Is that how some schools jumped so far ahead. They monetized their fanbase earlier and more effectively than others?

At SHI you have the opportunity to tailgate outside and not forced into extortion inside the stadium if you want a beer.

Miami has tons of parking in the immediate area surrounding the stadium. During the SB I attended(Colts vs Saints) that entire area was utilized by corporations.

I've been saying this for years.

I've seen, firsthand, some pretty famous tailgate scenes. There's nothing out there better than our Yellow and Blue lots.
