OT: RIP Pope Benedict

Might be the last of the traditional popes of the Catholic church. Unfortunately for him he'll most be remembered for following one of the real giants of the Church, John Paul II .

He was the perfect transitional Pope and did his job well. R.I.P.
Agree- I was going to use the word transitional but feel he may have been more of a bridge and Francis is the transitional Pope.
A great loss for mankind.

I think that is part of his greatness. Traditional but recognized the world is changing and for the Catholic Religion, and in some ways- many religions, needed to start to transition or start losing followers. The fact that he had the strength to step away to allow Francis to succeed him is amazing upon itself. Selfless.

A true leader that knew when it was time to step aside and let another lead his Church.
The Catholic Religion moved into the present because of the leadership of Pope Benedict and will move forward because of the way Pope Benedict set the course for his successor Pope Francis to follow bringing Catholicism into the modern world

I have no idea where people get the idea Ben was secular transmogrifier .
Contrary to popular belief the seminaries pre-Ben were lax and increasingly corrupt.
Ben made acceptance rules stricter.
Of course things were already off the hook, and the Vatican is now famous for every manner of vice and corruption (like everywhere else in organized burecracies).
Vatican is flush with CCP cash and recently threw one of its best cardinals (Cardinal Zen - stout Hong Kong freedom fighter) under the bus (while also breaking laws in US).
Americans often forget the CC is bigger than US and Europe, and a lot of western secular indulgence doesn't play in a lot of places.
Our local CCs are busting at the seams with old skool immies from foreign places
We had a mile long parade on Christmas Day, and 1000s come for crucifixion re-enactments on Easter
The don't like "Latinx" label or the various psychopathologies being cloaked as "progress"
Another mistake is interpreting decline in organized institutions as a decline in principled fervor.
Lots of people gave-up on institutions (especially the Protestant denominations who became most secular of all and embraced liberation theology) but still believe humans have a divine spark in the psyche

The protestant churches that stopped talking about Jesus...and started down the progressive secular path became essentially social groups. Those churches are dead.
I'm guessing probably not so much to their congregations. Which of Jesus's teachings was it where he said "hate all those who don't talk enough about me"? Are synagogues all dead too, seeing as they don't view Jesus as the son of God?

Myself- Christian non Catholic and non church going. But I respect every religion and person with their beliefs.
Even though Benedict was traditional, he also very much respected every belief.

I haven't seen anybody in this thread being anti-Catholic. I have seen one guy being anti Church/pope, and a couple/few apparent Catholic guys attack other religions.
I think that, sometimes, some religious people view it as some sort of personal religious affront when people don't agree with a biased viewpoint that seeks to elevate one particular chosen religion above all others. But that is a logical fallacy conceived by snowflakes who can't take alternative viewpoints.
One can always easily be for their own chosen religion, or for no religion at all, while simultaneously not being at all opposed to anybody else's religion.

I have pity on people who attend supposed Christian churchs but don't hear the truth.
Regarding the Catholic church, I predict it will split into a liberal church that essentially throws away the portions of the Bible not currently in favor and one with more traditional teachings. This will almost certainly happen in next 20 yrs, if not sooner.
actually some religious leaders have thrown part of the bible away for political reasons.
Religions are being split because of how some religious leaders are interpreting what the bible says ,putting hate ahead of compassion.
Some words to a song say best on what's happening to religious beliefs in today's society
and the lack of compassion many who claim to follow the Lord's teaching act towards others.

Since politics have already been interjected, I'll throw in my two cents. A lot of folks here loved the guy since he was so conservative. IMO, he won't go down as one of the greats, unfortunately. Sex abuse scandals and opposition to condoms are a big part of his legacy.

What makes you think you, or the Catholic Church, or any other human or human-designed organization, has a unique claim on the truth? What makes any human ever born qualified to judge the truth about spiritual, religious, Godly things?
This is where the wheels come off the bus, when people insist they know the truth and everybody else is wrong. Jesus preached love. Said it was above all other things. That sounds like a pretty good truth to me.
