RIP to the man.

Since politics have already been interjected, I'll throw in my two cents. A lot of folks here loved the guy since he was so conservative. IMO, he won't go down as one of the greats, unfortunately. Sex abuse scandals and opposition to condoms are a big part of his legacy.

Ummm- it was exposed during his regime and he started to prosecute- it had gone on unabashed during the saint before him and from the start of the religion. The fact that he knew he had to hand it off…is incredible

I don't think so. Faith structures, particularly conservative ones, are not built to be remolded and fashioned for "modern times."

They are made to endure modern times.

I am 38, a long wandering catholic, who is coming home to the Church after finding the secular world around me increasingly immoral, distasteful, and inhumane.
Ratzinger always was the north on my compass, even these 12 years as emeritus. Rest in peace, father.

What makes you think you, or the Catholic Church, or any other human or human-designed organization, has a unique claim on the truth? What makes any human ever born qualified to judge the truth about spiritual, religious, Godly things?

This is where the wheels come off the bus, when people insist they know the truth and everybody else is wrong. Jesus preached love. Said it was above all other things. That sounds like a pretty good truth to me.

I‘m gotta hit the shower and head out. But I’m gonna practice what Jesus said and love people tonight. Don’t need any religions to tell me that’s a good thing to do (especially the shower).

According to most Catholic scholars they are not churches at all, but rather places of worship. They feel there are only 2 churches, The Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox

Seemed like a solid guy. Very old when he took the post but very well respected and thought of. Prayers up to the Catholic family. Big loss and a sad time for many. He was so well loved and will be missed.
