Is there a stat that measures this per team?

It would be interesting to see where Rutgers would rank in that stat. Say a team averages 75 and we held them to 55. It would be a -20

Add it up for all games and see where a team stands

I’m pretty sure in all our wins we are way over a -20. Indiana had averaged 87. OSU even we held 15 under they had averaged 81.

It's basically what adjusted defensive efficiency measures. Obviously Ohio State averaging 75 points (or whatever) is different from Bucknell averaging 75. One is much easier contain.

Same with number of possessions. If two teams hold Ohio State to 60 points but one did it in 55 possessions and the other did it in 70 possessions that's a big difference. Adjusted DE takes these into account.

Right but that's all based on per possession stats. I guess that's a more accurate way to determine defensive efficiency anyway

This might not be exactly what you are looking for but Massey Ratings (https://masseyratings.com/cb/ncaa-d1/ratings) is doing adjusted offense/defense ratings based on ppg and not per possession. He has us #11 in defense. This is not updated for today's game and probably still contains some preseason weight. It should improve some from today's result.

Agreed that per possession is better b/c slow/fast tempo causes you to give up fewer/more points but isn't really better/worse defense. Kenpom has us #4 in adjusted def eff and Barttorvik has us #3.

At one point in the second half Pike brought Caleb and Mag back in and I knew we were going to lock them down and seal the game

I don't like Mag and Caleb off the court at the same time. One should be on the court at all times IMO

One thing about tempo though... if you slow a team down and give them less possessions, that is part of a good defensive gameplan

How do they come up with this? Is it just based on the scoring runs when these players are in the game?

I like this stat but wouldn’t live by it. Wake had some streaks where they were nailing long 3’s and they also had stretches where they missed a lot of shots. If you asked my to predict the +/- of our players no way would I have these huge swings in there because everyone played pretty well and it’s hard to keep track who was in with who and when did they make those long 3’s, etc.

Hyatt and Spencer both gave us good spurts with their scoring but this game was definitely about our D and turning D into Offense which we did not do at all against SHU.

I hear you, but if Pike can quickly rest your two best D players at the same time and bring them back together, Pike can put on a FC press or something else very disruptive to generate a run with a rested Caleb and Mag.

No it doesn’t. Cam got full credit in his plus/minus for all of his 15 points. Plus/minus is just one statistic, a very good one, though. And another stat is how well Cam shot.
