Essentially, Cliff chose Rutgers to stay close to home during the Covid pandemic.

Making that comment while the walls were coming down yesterday, the noise level raising the roof.... after Simpson showed ELITE athleticism -seemed like sour grapes. I don't suppose any Indy players chose the Hoosers because of Covid as opposed to their history, movie, lore. Favoritism !

Loved the final results with RU pulling away from Indy Whoosiers again.... seemed like a better promo for Dylan, Donnie and whomever else was watching!

Oh yeah....and WE WANT DYlan Harper!!!

they were talking about how Cliff was top 50 recruit, and the guy said he stayed at home in NJ because his family moved here and there was a pandemic. It was that simple. No other context. They were showing Cliff on the court after a bucket or something.

Omoruyi committed on 3/29, which was like 2 weeks after the shutdowns started.... doubt that a multi-year commitment would come down to what was, at the time, expected to be a shorter-term shutdown. In hindsight, those early projections of how long the shutdown would be seem absurdly optimistic, but the decision wasn't made with the benefit of foreknowledge of how long the pandemic would last.

The pandemic (as noted above) made him think about being closer to family rather than farther - but there's no way he could have thought "I want to be close to them for the 2+ years of upcoming pandemic disruption"

It's the pattern of making excuses for why players choose Rutgers. I watch a lot of college basketball and that doesn't happen with other players. It's not critical as much as it is lazy. How many years do we have to make the tournament and knock off top teams before these media types realize this is not the historically bad program but a good program in a major market that players want to play for?

I also heard him say that. The context was that he was talking about what a highly regarded recruit he was. The implication was that Covid was the factor that tilted him to RU.

There are and will be people that continue to knock this program as being a fluke. They judge on the past and not the present

The present truth is …

we have been to the ncaa level program three years in a row (sorry, But I count the covid year), and trending for a fourth

We have a very good practice facility …

We have one of the best home courts in the county that every one who plays loves playing in …

We graduate our players …and a lot of them go on to get advanced degrees

This is an outstanding basketball program with an outstanding coach .

No disrespect to Indiana …but a lot of sports judges the past into the oresent judgements

Keep winning and they will have to only judge us by our season and regime ….

Who cares we beat 4/5 star talent with 3/4 star talent often. I rather over achieve with less than be Indiana or Nebraska or others who get 5 star talent and underperform.

Those who make the excuses are the ones we beat the crap out of.

Good point. I believe we can handle most 4/5 talent because their star count is usually weighed more heavily toward offensive prowess in high school.

When opposing coaches and commentators say things like Rutgers punched them in the mouth, what I hear is that “our 4-star guys aren’t used to being defended with that kind of focus and intensity.”

You know, most people don't like defensive-minded teams and throw out terms like, "thugs", "bullies." etc., but I say wear that like a badge of honor! Why? It eventually perpetuates a fear factor in other teams and fans...it allows them to cloak themselves in it so when they get their collective a$$es handed to them they can roll out the excuse.

For me, it's a thing of beauty. High flying offenses might be more exciting but one bad game and it's a loss.

At least with good defense if you end up losing it's not for lack of effort.

I really think that Pike is looking specifically for guys of a certain mindset and work ethic - gym rat types that are not afraid to roll up their sleeves or to compete for minutes based on their defensive effort. He's not going to heavily pursue a high-rated offensive guy who isn't going to lock in on defense - and is looking as much for intangibles as he is for shooting percentages.

As RU72 said in another thread, it's the system. He wants guys who "fit" more than guys with high level offensive skillsets who won't mesh with what he's trying to do.

Five fingers aren't as strong as one fist - a team of guys pulling together with chemistry can overcome a collection of more highly-regarded guys each trying to operate individually.

An elite talent like TJD isn't just trying to beat his man 1v1... he's going to get the full defensive effort of all 5 guys working together, with traps/doubles/switches/etc. Basketball isn't just five 1v1 matchups all playing on the court at once - the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts.
