a nugget from todays article….

His phone kept ringing. Rutgers has become an attractive option for the neutral-site showcases that dot the college hoops landscape each November. Pikiell has resisted committing to a traditional Feast Week tournament – he’s wary of extended non-conference travel and would rather give his players Thanksgiving off – but he’s warmed to the concept of the one-off “We had a chance to play a one-off in San Diego," Pikiell said. “But when you go across the country, that’s three days. I didn’t want to fly to Seattle either, but that was for Gonzaga.”

So RU is the only team that is concerned about long travel and missing Thanksgiving ? sounds like a big excuse to me to avoid tough competition

You don't trust Coach to know what he's doing?

As a San Diego resident, this tidbit makes me very sad

Love Pike. He clearly knows what he’s doing. Selfishly as fans, a lot of would love to see a tourney style non conf event like every other high major participates In. Fans would travel. And it Builds a Resume. Eventually we should aspire to be more than a last team in and aim for a high seed.

Exactly, as a fan, I'd love to see them play more games against better opponents, but the B1G schedule is grueling and Coach knows better than I do what the team needs to be successful.
If the conference keeps adding teams and games, I'd expect more B1G teams will take this same approach.
Imagine 26 conference games?

I understand him not wanting something Thanksgiving weekend. There’s no reason we couldn’t have played in the bracket with Vermont and Iona though, for instance. It’s literally at the same venue we’re going to - this weekend isn’t it?

2-1 is fine. One in Washington, one in the Garden, and one at the RAC.
That way sure
I assumed that they were treating us like we handle Buffalo in football scheduling

2-1 or worse
Here we didn’t even push for a RAC home game as part of the 1-1

I was being sarcastic. I'm sure Gonzaga would walk away from my suggestion. I agree that we should not sign off on a 2 for 1 deal with anyone where we play 2x in their backyard and once in ours.

Rutgers scheduled an away game at Gonzaga but Gonzaga dropped it and your assumption is that they don’t want tough competition? I will never understand some of you. Flying across the country puts the team at a major disadvantage but whatever…

I'm still weeping on missing that NCAA game in SD last year :(
Yea, I was there anyway. Flight out, & day before games, hanging out at Pacific Beach would have way cooler wearing RU gear, gearing up for the games.. was also frustrating when ND beat Alabama, as we would have made it to the round of 32 for the Andy Katz projected “Rock Fight” with Texas Tech..

I like Pike more and more. He is so right about this. Why keep your players away from their families on Thanksgiving when you don't have to.

Gonzaga can go F*ck themselves. Don't go offering a legit B1G program that 2 and 1 bs. Rutgers doesn't need the SOS Quad 1 game that badly. Rutgers has the B1G, B1G/ACC and sometimes Gavitt games to bolster the schedule. Isn't that enough?

With that stated, the perception is still that Rutgers is not big time. Probably recently upgraded from small time to that nether region between mid major and major. Hence, perception and thereby recruiting, while better, falls a bit short of elite. IMHO, Rutgers missing out on its top 3 big man recruits during what could be Cliff's last year is more about perception than anything else.

The trend is definitely up. We know the coaches can develop players. Don't get too frustrated by these perception issues as the light is at the end of the tunnel in that regard.

SDSU is great venue. Games actually held on a college campus, easy access airport, trolleys & busses to downtown & beach areas, great weather, great eats.
Just a little bit more glamorous location than Albany. 😏
While Albany/MSG might be the easiest path for RU fans this year, the most fun - & actually kind of predicted in one of the pre-season brackets (minus the First four detour w WVU) was Orlando (as pod for West) & Vegas (West Regional)..

Actually - I take back what I said about playing in one of the tournies this weekend as I think Pike explained it in the article. Really annoying if true too - that we had block off this week for an extended time only to find out we weren’t playing in the Gavitt games. That’s wrong. The teams sitting it out should be determined and informed immediately. Maybe if Gavitt goes away that will open the door for us scheduling a relatively local east coast 4 team mini bracket. I guess Providence was a more desirable last minute choice for the weekend bracket (they must’ve had to wait to schedule too) due to their close proximity to Mohegan so more draw potential. I do see Pike’s point about the potential for major travel being a distraction.

Are they going to Europe this summer? It will be 4 years since they went last - 2019 - seems like they should be.

So we are going to play a 2 game back to back in a far away neutral location, return home for another game, then fly to Miami or some ACC/B1G contest, then play 2 Top 25 teams in the B1G, then the in-state war with Seton Hall before we even get to the holiday season??

I am in no way thinking we should have no marquee OOC games, but if we added a Gavitt Game on top of everything there, it just does not make sense to me.

I am fine with UConn in Long Island next year, at SHU and hosting a ACC B1G game and possibly a road game in Gavitt. Add in one other solid game like Wake Forest away and that's more than enough for next year too.
